Stellaris: Apocalypse is due soon & there's a new overview video up, also a note about Linux sales

Quoting: KandarihuI wish we could point out to Paradox that the reason for the abysmally small market share in Linux is largely due to growth of Windows in Asia (particularly China) is outstripping Linux growth worldwide.
Reasons are one thing, but cost vs income balance of supporting an ultra-niche market is another thing. Which one will a publisher/developer look at when considering porting a game (or developing cross-platform)?

For a while availability of games on Linux was driven by the fact that there were so few games available, so Linux gamers were buying almost everything that was available. Now that we actually have a choice, share of Linux gamers purchasing a particular game is closer and closer to the overall Linux market share - which is sub-1%.

Farming sim 'Cattle and Crops' hits Steam Early Access, has Linux support
14 Feb 2018 at 10:36 am UTC

I spent way too much time in Farming Simulator a while back, hoped for Linux support in their most recent version and refused to purchase it for Windows. I am so glad that Cattle and Crops works under Linux, definitely considering purchasing it.

Now, if only we had a proper train simulator...

Looks like the Linux market share on Steam went up in January

So this significant increase puts us back on the general downwards trend that has been ongoing for more than a year now?

Windows 10 S is our only hope now ;)

It's time to bug Feral Interactive about future port requests once again

I'll just repeat my tweet:

Train Sim World and all of its current and future £20000 worth of DLC.

Why? Car fans have Dirt, ETS/ATS, F1, Grid. Flight fans at least have X-plane. Trains... We have some network management games (e.g. Transport Fever) but no simulators.
Oh, and Dovetail Games are about one hour drive from Feral's office.

The Steam Hardware Survey for December 2017 shows a reasonable increase for Linux

Let's wait for January results to confirm it, but it seems that October and November results were outliers. December results seem to continue the earlier trend downwards though.

Here's another way to look at the Linux market share on Steam

The truth is: Linux share is going down however you slice the pie. Yes, the total market share collapsed, but whether you look at all excluding Chinese or at English only, there is a consistent drop of 20% over the last year.

20%.

Valve has added 11 new currencies to the Steam Store

Not only I can no longer buy like half of games on my wishlist, as they have no prices in Polish zloty, but also some bundles disappeared, even though games in these bundles are available and bundles are published by the same publisher.

To add insult to injury, quite a few games are now more expensive than before. Perhaps publishers didn't realise that Polish zloty purchasing power is lower than Euros, not higher...

F1 2017 released for Linux as Feral Interactive’s first Vulkan-only title, here’s a port report

Quoting: [email protected]The gap is abstraction.

There's a whole discussion on the subject at Reddit.

Feral did a good job with what they can physically do imo. Their work is fantastic.

Don't expect performance parity with Windows. That's akin to comparing native performance to emulation (although abstraction isn't exactly emulation).
I am aware of this discussion. It's just that this up to 40% penalty in the review is much higher than expected. It's good that neither dubigrasu nor Phoronix confirm that. 10% gap is great, 15-20% is acceptable, >30% is not acceptable.

Interesting benchmark from dubigrasu on Youtube, using modest hardware (GTX 780). Overall gap is less than 20%, so less than liamdawe experienced.

It seems that the biggest difference between Windows and Linux exists shortly after the start and then disappears. Loading of textures perhaps?

Quoting: LeopardThat performance is a joke.

If a Vulkan port came out like that , sorry but all Vulkan hassle from Feral sounds like a selling tool.

What will be the difference when they do that on OpenGL? I think it wouldn't be worse.
And yet the game works perfectly fine. If you have a system like liamdawe's and hook it up to a 60hz monitor you wouldn't even notice the difference compared to Windows when maxing out the settings.
Some of us don't have 980 Ti or 1070+ cards and the game would run well on Windows but probably require medium or even low settings to be enjoyable on Linux. And this port is from Feral, one of more experienced porters.

If you consider buying a new PC, the cost of running Linux is money you'd need to pay for a system 30% more powerful (whatever that means :) ). That's about the difference between 1060 and 1070, which is about $140.

Edit: there's something strange with Liam's results. Dubigrasu and Phoronix report much smaller difference.
