Dark Reign: The Future of War, a true classic RTS is being remade in OpenRA

Quoting: slaapliedjeSweet! This has always been my favorite RTS. Warwind is probably the second, though I need to play that more.
I have seen you post often on these kind of news and was curious (no joke) about what would be your RTS poison of choice.
Good pick, this is from the "golden era", really the other ones on the race could be Total Annihilation and some C&C.

Between OpenRA and 0AD, they are doing an amazing work here. OpenRA engine offers potential long term survival on a game like this, especially if we consider multiplayer.

Command and Conquer series is also good. Myth is an amazing series. Generally I like ones that break the mold of the typical Warcraft II / Star Craft clones.

Like I prefer the games where your units have a bit more personality (as in they can get better over time, and you want to make sure they live through a battle, Myth captures that in an amazing way, as does Warwind.)
I really liked Myth. I need to finish it. Moving to more 3d world, really liked Sacrifice as well. I think at that point, I had burnt out on Red Alert and Warcraft 2 and similar ones that revolved around base building, having played them... A lot.

RimWorld - Biotech and the free 1.4 update out now

Quoting: ExpandingManRimworld is one of those games that seems amazing but I've really struggled to enjoy. I find it plodding an tedious. Guess it's time to go back and try again, hopefully I'll stick with it long enough to get over the initial boredom.

I do remember having one game where there was a colonist who was really annoying because he had brain worms and then his girlfriend dumped him and he was becoming increasingly useless. Then he freaked out and attacked the village iguana. RIP annoying colonist, killed by an iguana in self-defense.
Lol. RimWorld is one of my favorite games, but I do agree; it has a slow start. I kind of figure that's a drawback of the genre and design as other games also suffer a slow beginning more or less (Factorio/Cities: Skylines, etc).

But compared to those, they're can be a lot of waiting, even with the time speed up.

Fyi, the Prepare Carefully mod is what I Think Philadelphius is mentioning. It's a very helpful mod that eliminates some of the potential rough/tedious starts dished out by the RNG without being cheaty.

Someone released the FOSS RTS 0 A.D. on Steam without speaking to the developers

Quoting: dziadulewiczIt may work yes, but the thing is it does not launch out of the box clicking Play. We are talking about the desktop here not Steam Deck. The Steam in question is most certainly not flatpak. Check out the discussions on SuperTux on Steam: it's filled with "not launching" or similar threads.
I just tried it on my Linux desktop. Absolutely zero issues out of the box. Hit Install, it installs. Hit Play, and it launches and runs fine.
I tried it too encouraged by your claim and guess what? IT HAS BEEN FIXED! :woot: It DOES launch now!
It does also bring to light part of the devs for 0ad concerns in publishing on Steam; supporting 3rd party proprietary middleware.

Inspired by Factorio and RimWorld, space colony building sim Stardeus out in Early Access

Quoting: LeflLooks very interesting, but I tend to stay away from Early Access games
Agreed, although my exception is "does the game seem fine/fun as is?". I treat it exactly the same as a full release (because they are the same - at least to the gamer).

Does look cool. This is one I'll have to keep an eye on. Thanks for the article!

RimWorld - Biotech expansion announced and a big free update
7 Oct 2022 at 9:12 pm UTC

Still one of my favorite games. I'm interested to see how it all works, especially the implants part, that's really cool

The other features kinda reminds me of some already existing mods, but with suck a popular game, there's bound to be some overlap.

Definitely gonna spend money on this.

GOG celebrates 14 years with big sale, game giveaway and Skyrim release

I won't lie on this one though.... I'm not sure how many get emails from GOG, but the title of this one was something like:

GOG GIVEAWAY . SKYRIM SE....

I totally thought they were giving away Skyrim!! I want until I opened the email that I realized they were meant to be separate titles.

Haven't felt that silly and disappointed in a while, lol

Quoting: Whitewolfe80Yay i guess would of been way more amped for this if it would of happened say in 2012 a year ater the game came out but now reached that point where i know every area of the map I can be level 24/25 before leaving whiterun hold and without cheating maxed out blade and armour. But if you ve never played it seems unlikely but if you ve never played it great time to get it.
I've never played it.

Reason: I have doubts Vanilla Skyrim would be better than nicely modded Morrowind. And mods on Linux aren't exactly easy to do for this series, so I never bought it.

If I can ever motivate myself to finish Witcher 3, maybe I'll buy it. I wont have the time to play like when I was able to play Morrowind, but maybe it'll be fun.

Quoting: denyasisI'm definitely interested. But I want to see some good solid benchmarks. I know Ray tracing is all the rage, but I'd really like to see how it compares to cards from the last few years in general gaming.

If it's a good step up from, say my 1070ti and has a decent cooler, at that price, that's an upgrade I can afford!
I would say don't count on ray tracing just yet. I was trying Quake the other night and was getting around 500fps without ray tracing on my RTX 3060 laptop. After switching on ray tracing that went down to around 50fps. This was on FHD screen. On a WQHD (3440x1440) that number went down to around 25fps. So, the penalty you pay for RT is still pretty large and can probably only be afforded on RTX 40 series or something. If you have a big screen (big TV for example) then 4K resolution + higher frame rate gives you better payoff than ray tracing.
Thanks for the info! I must offer my apologies as well. I realized my post was not written well. I'm not really interested in ray tracing, but more general purpose gaming benchmarks. I should have been more clear now what I look at it. Ray Tracing is neat and all, but like you indicated, the tech doesn't really seem ready for general use.
