Quoting: BeamboomLet's be real: Nobody uses SteamOS
I'm using SteamOS, Steam Machines use SteamOS many people who built PCs specifically for the living room use SteamOS. Of course ~nobody uses SteamOS on their desktop PC, but just because you don't use it doesn't mean that "nobody" does.
And how many do you estimate use SteamOS? Is it even measurable on the Steam user stats?

Nobody has purchased Steam Machines yet. It's not even on the market in any proper way - it's not even out of beta. It's almost to be considered an experiment at this point in time. Heck I don't even know where to buy a Steam Machine should I want one - and I'm above average interested in this!

And when I say "nobody", I mean in a practical sense. The stats on this site says 33 guys are using SteamOS - the same amount who use the distro Solus. It's nobody in this context. It's zero. Nill.
The whole universe would cease to exist if there was no difference between 0 and sufficient small numbers.
Human society could not function if there was no difference between nobody and sufficient small number of people.

0 and nobody are quite important concepts in a practical sense in other words.

On a less serious note:

Steammachines where launched around 1.5 years ago and around the same time SteamOS got out of beta with version2.*
There is a beta branch where updates are tested before they get push to the released branch.

You can see a list of Steammachine makers on the Steam store under hardware http://store.steampowered.com/sale/machines/ [External Link]
Thats fewer than where announced before launch. I know Alienware came out with newer models last year, I bought one of those, Zotac still has the original and I dont know about the others.

IO Interactive retains the rights to HITMAN and becomes fully independent

Quoting: JahimselfI don't know if it's a good news for linux gamers, but it's a good news for video game imo. It's always better that game developping studios are not owned by big publishers. Being independant means for room for creativity.
I agree with you, this is good news for video games as such first, And lets hope it will end up with a Linux port in the end.

Steam Direct, the self-publishing system on Steam will cost developers $100, Curators getting an update too

Quoting: lucinosMy opinion is that Valve should do something like a combination of Steam Direct and Greenlight.

To be more exact I am thinking that Valve could collaborate with a completelly open platform (itch.io maybe). The idea would be that Steam Direct could have more cost as a flat $100 can not work well in all cases, but developers/games with good reputation on the other platform could have a free pass on steam. That I think would benefit everyone. It would benefit Valve as Steam would have better quality control, it would benefit a platform like itch.io as it would have more attention, it would benefit indie developers as they would have more choice.
I like that idea, but the collaboration with another site might not be something Valve wants

Looks like Micro Machines World Series from Codemasters is heading to Linux

Quoting: MohandevirI didn't search thouroughly, but what is really intriguing is that Feral doesn't seem to be implicated. Codemasters is producing the Linux build on it's own? That would be something new.
Virtual Programming did port several Codemasters games too, the Overlord games and Dirt Showdown

But this would be the first 1day Linux release release from Codemasters, if it will be 1day for Linux right?

SteamOS updated, Valve drops AMDGPU-PRO for Mesa

Quoting: UltraVioletPlease forgive my ignorance;

Will this update be coming to the Steam desktop client? And if so, will I be able to use the non proprietary drivers which are not the Mesa ones?
No, this is only for SteamOS. It is possible for you to get this update through whatever distro you use, however. :)
This update is not about the steam client. the steam client on steamos is the same as other distros and and not updated via steamos updates like this, but via the client self updating.

Some of the updates here like the new kernel (but maybe without all the patches including their own that valve put in) new nvidia driver, mesa and other packages, mostly security updates will come to other distributions too at their own schedule, or they already have them.

I find the name steamos is confusing, it indicates like their is steam in the OS, but they do not consider steam to be part of the os, just bundled with it, and it is set to autostart in big picture mode.
Then there is also the steam runtime, and the steam shop. No wonder people can mix things up if so many different things are called something with steam.

ValveOS would be a better name I think, but I am not a marketing person:-)

Have a look at the FAQ: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamuniverse/discussions/1/648814395741989999/ [External Link]
especially:
Q: What is SteamOS?
SteamOS is a fork (derivative) of Debian[www.debian.org] GNU/Linux. The current version (SteamOS 2.0) is called 'brewmaster' and it is based on the Debian 'jessie' (stable 8.x) distribution. ...
and
Q: What software runs on SteamOS?
SteamOS is designed to run Steam and Steam games. ...

So they consider SteamOS their Linux distribution, which does include steam, but steam is not part of the OS as I read it.
It definitely is not part of steamos updates, since it has its own update mechanism.

I sense an AMD APU based Steam Machine in a not so distant future :woot:
Aww thats cute you think Steam machines are still a thing
Dell still has Steammamchines under their Alienware brand, and also with AMD GPU since sometime last year I think. I never heard of any using a AMD based steammachine from Alienware though and until this new update is released it wouldnt make much sense, but after maybe.

well at least the multiplayer situation is mentioned there, and also "Dawn of War III’s multiplayer is cross-platform between Mac and Linux, but not with Windows. We hope to revisit cross-platform multiplayer, and implement that in a future update."
