For me the performance increase OpenGL vs Vulkan was definitely a lot more significant. I'd still say it probably doubled or more. Maybe it is because I have quite low single-core performance with my AMD CPU.

Cool, I like that. Thanks for the clarification, Liam.

Thank you so very much, Feral. With the latest mesa git it runs like a charm on my RX 480. The fps increase is insane ... so smooth. I am really happy!

Unfortunately it freezes my system. I run a Radeon RX 480 with Mesa 17.0.2, llvm 4.0 and Linux 4.9.
Is radv not supported yet or do I need to compile the latest mesa git?
Update: Just read that I need the very latest mesa git. Will compile that soon and check again ;-)
Update 2: Just compiled the latest mesa git: it works!! On first glance I'd say the fps has doubled, I am damn impressed. Thank you, Feral!

Thanks a lot for bringing this up, Liam! I hope there will be some solutions (in whichever software/layer) to address this automatically in the future. Until then this is really something to take into account when gaming on Linux.
