Narrative-focused expansion Astral Planes released for Stellaris
21 Nov 2023 at 7:05 pm UTC

Well, maybe it's a good thing I'm in the grip of a RimWorld obsession right now, it'll give some time for bugs to be fixed before trying Astral Planes (which does sound pretty interesting).

WHAT THE GOLF? gets an 'Among Golf Update' out now

"Expect betrayal[…]"
Isn't that any game of mini-golf with collisions between balls allowed?

The Venus Next expansion for the digital version of Terraforming Mars (probably my favorite board game) just dropped yesterday, and since I'll be away from home the next two weeks for a conference/visiting family it'll probably get a bunch of playtime on my Deck.

War Thunder game engine Dagor Engine from Gaijin now open source

Intelligence agencies the world over must be salivating at the prospect of being able to make their own poorly-balanced games to tease out more classified handbooks on military hardware. 🤣

(That's not a dig at War Thunder, which on re-reading I see it could come off as; I haven't played it and have no opinions on its balancing.)

Discord for Linux gets Flathub Verified

Quoting: HelmetDoes this mean I should use the Flatpak version rather than what's in my repositories?
"Should?" No. Or at least not necessarily. That's a choice you'll have to make for yourself. If you use Flatpak a lot you may like having Discord be part of it as well. If you don't use Flatpak on your machine and are happy with downloading the occasional update (or waiting for your repository to update), you may not want to introduce it. It's up to you and your particular system. The article is mainly saying that if you do want to use the Flatpak version, it's now being officially maintained by the developers.

Hmm, might have to switch over if the Flatpak version actually auto-updates. I'm sick and tired of having to manually download the .deb and `sudo dpkg` it every time there's a version update. "Must be your lucky day, there's a new update!"…no, that's not what's going through my head, Discord.

Stellaris goes into uncharted territory with the Astral Planes expansion

Quoting: suchMy excuse is that I'm a few dlc behind.
Relatable! I'm almost always one DLC behind in my playthroughs (a new DLC comes out, I get it, and think "I should try out the mechanics from the last one which I didn't try out when it released because I was trying out the mechanics from the previous one," etc., etc.).

Quoting: suchIt looks like they're shifting focus away from adding mechanics which might be evidence something is in the works.
What? The most recent Galactic Paragons expansion had plenty of mechanics changes. This is a story pack* rather than a full expansion so it'll be focused on events rather than sweeping mechanical changes** (although it obviously must have some new mechanics for the titular Astral Rifts themselves), but that says nothing about what the next expansion will be.

*Which I didn't realize until I saw it in a PC Gamer article – this article says "a narrative-focused expansion".

**So more like Distant Stars.

Slay the Spire devs release Dancing Duelists after abandoning Unity for Godot

Quoting: g000hI didn't "get" the play aspect of the title. Is the core mechanic to just choose a set of cards and then let the game auto-battle, because there didn't seem to be any meaningful choice after choosing the cards?
I mean, it's described as a "deckbuilding autobattler", so that's pretty much what I would expect from the description. I haven't played an autobattler (and can't comment on the relative quality of this one), but it seems like a genre that's been becoming more popular over the last few years.

Interesting! Sounds pretty cool. Maybe we'll learn some more about where the Unbidden come from? And wow, later this year, that's not that many months left at this point.
