I've been following Bevy for the past few years, and I while I think it's a solid engine with significant promise and solid momentum, the developers themselves note that it is still very much a work in progress. It just hit version 0.11 (with releases roughly every 3 months), and they're not afraid to overhaul and break APIs in the name of improvement between versions at the moment. It also lacks an editor program at the moment, though now that 0.11 is out I believe starting work on one is finally ready to happen. There are definitely people using it to build games right now, but even the official Bevy information page suggests Godot if you want/need a full-featured game engine today.
If all that hasn't put you off it, I do think it's a very interesting engine, and one I'd like to get around to experimenting with making games in one of these days. Of note, it's written in Rust, so might be a fun way to help brush up on your Rust skills.

"Tired of your players figuring out ways to get past your carefully arranged invisible walls and waist-high barricades, and sequence breaking, maybe even – GASP – speed running your game? Try our NEW Enhanced Barriers™ technology! Keep your players in their places at all times, and never again see an embarrassing 5 minute world record run for your artistic vision which should take 87.5 painstaking hours to complete!"
I don't actually know what it does either, but that's what came to mind. 🤣

STAR WARS Knights of the Old Republic IIThat confused me, since I was playing the native version when it released on Steam back in…2016 or so? But always great to see fixes for this gem, whatever the version.

Quoting: eldakingFrom reading the announcement it sounds like this was a decision made well in advance, and had nothing to do with the release itself, which seems to have gone well. They do mention they'll be closing down bit by bit over the rest of the year, and have a patch and content drop planned for Shadow Gambit before shutting down completely.Quoting: anewsonI wonder at what point they made this decision... seems so strange to close up shop right after a good release. Maybe they didn't think the launch was as successful as it needed to be? or maybe they decided to close up a long time ago but wanted to push out this last game. I also wonder if it's related to them self-publishing instead of using the ill-fated Daedalic (of Gollum fame)Well, if they were going to close up, then after a release is the only time - because the alternative is starting something new and spending several years on it...
I assume it was not a decision made quickly either, so it wasn't about the commercial success of the latest game that just released. Maybe about the development of it, regardless of success, or maybe it has been going for longer still.

One thing I found odd about Phoenix Point, which I picked up a year or two ago to see how it compared to XCOM 1/2, was the complete absence of music during tactical missions. There's nothing inherently wrong with such a choice, but in this day and age it does make the game feel like it's unfinished or they forgot to hire a composer or something. (It doesn't have be bombastic or noticeable, just a quiet, mildly-unsettling bit would seem to fit the theme quite well. I did like some aspects of it (the aiming in the 3D world, enemies with multiple damageable bits, vehicles in missions), but ultimately it didn't hold my interest long enough to finish a campaign. I really should get back to it sometime…

Quoting: minidoudon't try to play XCOM 2 with the native version, it's unstable and most mods make it crash.Huh, is that new? I've put 378 hours into XCOM 2 with the native version, most of that with literally hundreds of mods, and had almost no crashes (barring a few from me living dangerously and adding/removing mods during a run, which were clearly my fault). But I last played in Feb. 2022…

Oh noooooooooooooo
I mean, all the best to them and I hope they all recover from the pressures of game development. I'm glad to hear they're prioritizing their health. I'm just so bummed to hear this – Shadow Gambit might be my game of the year, and I was just thinking that the only thing their next game needed to be perfect was a level editor and mod support. I would absolutely love if they released their engine so other people could continue to use it, it's really quite fantastic.
Well, off to go buy the Supporter Edition bundle for Shadow Gambit that I was on the fence about to show my appreciation for all the hours of nail-biting stealth action their games have given me, I guess.
Though, wow, a sci-fi game with this engine could also be pretty incredible.

Quoting: scaineThat's a massive shame. I admit that I've had Shadow Tactics on my wishlist for years now. I like the sound of the gameplay, but don't really like the setting (ancient Japan, or whatever). And I swear I'm not making this up, but I honestly can't stand Wild West themed stuff either. If Red Dead Redemption isn't going to break that dislike, I guess Desperados was on a beating to nothing.Understandable, I loved Shadow Tactics and Aiko's Choice but didn't get Desperadoes III myself. If you like fantasy you might enjoy Shadow Gambit; personally I'm glad they went the fantasy route as it really allowed them to go crazy with cool abilities that the (relatively) more grounded settings didn't allow (teleportation, launching people out of a magical cannon, the ability to grow bushes nigh-instantly as cover anywhere, etc.).
Give me fantasy or sci-fi any day.

Shadow Gambit: The Cursed CrewCan definitely recommend if you like developer Mimimi's previous real-time tactics games (Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, Desperadoes III), though I've been playing it on desktop rather than my Deck.

Coincidentally I just updated from Bullseye (Debian 11) to Bookworm (12) two day ago. 🙂 Been using Debian since 2015 at this point (my first, and so far only, distro hop [from Linux Mint Debian Edition 😆]).
