A Message From John Byrne Of AMD & A Survey
26 Sep 2014 at 10:12 pm UTC

I have been an AMD CPU user as long as I've had a desktop. In 2007, I bought a Toshiba laptop with AMD/ATI CPU and graphics. One month later, that graphics chip (x1200) was declared "legacy" by AMD. To add insult to injury, Ubuntu 9.04 came with XOrg not working with the Catalyst drivers for that chip. The open-source "radeon" driver became the only one available. It has improved vastly since those days.

I was so burned up by the declaration of a chip I had just bought to be "legacy," I vowed to never buy an ATI card again.

My main problem with AMD CPUs are the power consumption numbers, and the accompanying heat. I have a desktop whose motherboard died, and I'm very seriously considering going Intel, whose graphics have hugely improved in the Haswell generation (and they weren't a slouch even in the Sandy Bridge generation, it must be noted). Power consumption is far, far less than AMD, and a four-core Intel i5 beats an eight-core AMD in most benchmarks. Yes, it costs more, but I'd like less heat in my case.

This looks pretty awesome even this early. I'll have to wait a few days before I can afford it, but it certainly looks tantalizing.

Quoting: KohlyKohlI'll probably pick up stronghold 3 regardless of the reviews because I haven't been able to play any good RTS' since I gave up windows completely years ago.

Also, here's hoping that the next stronghold will be on Linux...

Uh, there is Planetary Annihilation, which, if it isn't a RTS, I'm a big Windows 8 fan.

Gauntlet Linux Version Delayed For Steam Machines
23 Sep 2014 at 7:00 pm UTC

I'll point out that CIV V, which was developed specifically for SteamOS, has been reported to run perfectly on SteamOS, Debian, Ubuntu, Red Hat/Fedora, Arch, and Slackware.

Yes, the stuff about Xorg is problematical, but I think that Good Programming Practices will win the day.

GOL Cast: Maintaining the Law of Post-Apocalyptic World in Wasteland 2
23 Sep 2014 at 6:38 pm UTC

This was the very first game I helped on Kickstarter. I've been playing the beta for a couple of months now, but I started a new game when the release came out. It's good fun, but combat can be a little annoying when you have trouble selecting whom you want; I probably haven't read enough of the docs to make it more smooth:O.

One warning I will impart to new purchasers: The game apparently ships set up for a 4:3 screen, and the mouse pointer activates considerably below the button. Get into Settings/Video (which may frustrate you as it did me) and select 1600x900 (apparently the highest resolution) and all will be fine, with the buttons lining up with the mouse.

Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition For Linux Is In Testing

Bought some time ago on GOG.com (of course, it runs great under wine) and, while it's no Baldurs Gate, but it's good fun bashing monsters in a non-Diablo way.

I haven't tried it, but having an instruction set might just come in handy. $$$ to build it is another matter.
