Strife, The Second Generation MOBA From S2 Games Is Now On Steam

Had a couple matches last night and the first one actually crashed on me but the second match went really well!

As far as game length, unfortunately the one that finished was about 45 minutes! Thought it was really tense, at one point I swore we were going to lose, even wrote 'gg' in the chat. But then they just had like two hits left but lost all of their mobs so they ran off! So our team respawned and actually made it all the way into their base but we didn't get nearly as far through their center thing (I don't recall the name) and then on the enemy's next push we lost, but it was still quite tense!

A few glitches I noticed: the out-of-game menu is black when I start and I just have to click something else and then click back onto it and the color returns! The in-game menus sometimes are unresponsive and again this is solved by just changing window focus and then returning. I had a lot of screen tearing, but I didn't look to see if vsync was on. Some lag in the game but overall it was a really smooth experience!

The pets are a cool idea, the different characters are really cool looking and the two I've tried were interesting and easy to get into. I noticed that most characters can fill really any role which makes the game a lot more versatile and a huge amount easier to get into (no need to coordinate roles or lanes, everyone just winged it and it turned out fine!)

I'll be giving this a go tonight. I just hope that the match times are shorter than Dota 2. Seems that way from the things I've read. Saw somewhere that Strife matches are about 20 - 30 mins compared to 40 - 60 mins for Dota 2 (Haven't played much Dota 2 actually, so not sure if that's at all accurate).

Anyone able to share how similar this is to Drox Operative?

Looks pretty cool and if it's anything like Drox, I'm in!

Quoting: GuestMeh, I’ve just tried the demo and it’s just another annoying survival/crafting game :(. I wasn’t expecting this based on the trailer.
Name one game remotely similar to this. Also, I am really confused as to how you got the wrong impression from the trailer.

I love GamingOnLinux.com because it provides a place for linux gaming that isn't focused on open source and free software. Not that I hate those ideologies (in fact, I love them!) but I am glad to have a place that is more inclusive!

Looks like a more fleshed-out Angry Birds!  Could be quite good.

Unvanquished RTS & FPS Hybrid Releases Alpha 23

I'm a total NS2 rookie but played NS and Unvanquished a bit.  Of course there are a lot of elements that have to synergize right and a lot of room for error as the players won't just do exactly what the commander wants (not even mentioning whether the commander knows what they're doing).

Anyways, as a rookie in NS2, it definitely *feels* like aliens are OP.  I want to see all the tech that comes from research but in my 5 or so games, the human team has barely made it to flame throwers (one time there were mechs but our base was already in the process of being destroyed by the big aliens). It's one of those games that just aggravates you when your team is failing because many aspects are largely out of your control.

They should really build some kind of matchmaking system instead of a server browser as this could properly balance and prepare matches.  Cons are that this would be a serious undertaking for their team and I know their studio is now working on an (interesting) underwater game (just guessing that they've downsized the NS2 team).  Also, this is typically a highly difficult and nebulous tech to build into a game.

Steam's June hardware survey results are out!

I got the survey on Ubuntu 13.04 64bit!  I was wondering if it would ever happen!

Another thought to bring to the table: changing your OS is a big decision, as the year wears on (especially closer to holiday season) it will be more likely to increase as some finally decide to make the switch when upgrading (especially when dealing with a Windows 7 license!) or even getting/building a new box.
