Linux gaming optimization kit 'GameMode' has a new release up

I think I had to disable it for Shadow of the Tomb Raider or the game wouldn’t run, so it hasn’t seemed very helpful so far
Ultimately I have no idea what it does or why I would need it.

Borderlands 2 will see no further updates for Linux / macOS from Aspyr Media

Quoting: Comandante ÑoñardoImagine the next super AAA being six months timed SteamOS/Linux exclusive because, instead of taking the regular 30% cut, Valve takes the 10% of the game price only with that condition... 2 points less than Epic Store, by the way..
That’s just a race to the bottom—who runs out of money first? Valve can afford to keep its current cut because they have the features the users want and the audience the publishers want.

Quoting: Whitewolfe80Hate to say i called it but i called it Aspyr have seemingly given up on linux that much i expected but to give up on mac as well there publisher arm must be doing well if it can let the porting side of business go.
The Mac version is already at parity with the Windows updates as far as I know. Took them a few months, but they updated that port. So it’s not much to say that they don’t plan to update it again.

About damn time they said something. Can’t believe they had to be hounded for 18 months before finally giving closure. At this point I’d rather buy a Windows-only game that’s been shown to work on Proton than trust an Aspyr port, so good job on that PR.

Quoting: SalvatosHow much time do you reckon is spent doing crafting and gathering, versus exploring new locations and talking to NPCs? I’m more interested in the journey than the logistics, though it looks like it has a variety of minigames to make the crafting more engaging (and/or tedious in the long run?). Could you pretty much ignore much of the crafting to focus on other aspects, or do you need to build up the whole tech tree and keep stocking up to make everyone happy?
I played the demo and liked what I see - the fishing mini game wasn't too bad and the ratio story to mini games was fine.

And now I'm a proud owner of the gog version and will probably never open it again after a few of hours playing. The mini games/resource gathering is imo too overwhelming and my first reaction seeing the sawmill minigame was "what the fuck? are you crazy?". Maybe it has better usability with a game pad instead of keyboard, but for me it wasn't a relaxing game with a nice story line but longish segments of stupid games intersected by way too short snippets of a heartwarming story.

I will keep it as nephew and niece may like it - but I will not touch it again even with the proverbial 10-foot pole. I hope they will add an option to skip the games, I still love the art style and story of the game.

(the above is my personal impression alone. Don't blame me if you have a different opinion : ))
Thanks for following up! I felt the same as you about the demo, but I watched people play it a bit on Twitch and I was a little concerned about how many stations there were and all the production going on. I saw the sawmill minigame and, as you mentioned, I imagine it works much better on a gamepad than a keyboard. I guess this will be a close miss for me.

Is there a demo anywhere? This isn’t normally my kind of game but I feel like giving this a try (preferably without a 2-hour constraint).

I had no idea this project existed! I would love to play Icewind Dale 2 someday, I never got around to it before switching to Linux :)

Food for thought. Not that it hadn't been seen from the beginning...
Good read, thanks for sharing. For me, native games and actual ports still take precedence in a major way. I have a few very tempting games that I might buy heavily discounted at some point, but for my "everyday shopping", I still don’t even look at anything that’s not actually supported on Linux.

Proton is a wonderful tool, but at the end of the day it’s still a crutch, and we need to learn to walk again sooner or later...

Quoting: richipI'd like to contribute now even though the Linux version isn't guaranteed. I actually want to contribute more if a Linux version is a certainty. Is there a way to upgrade a pledge on Kickstarter once their Linux plans firm up?
Not unless they announce it before the campaign ends, which seems highly unlikely. Or another option would be if they use a pledge manager afterwards, where you can usually upgrade your pledge or pick add-ons for a limited time. This is something you should ask them directly.
