A three-way look at Rocket League on Linux, with D9VK versus Linux Native

Quoting: dpanterHow many fps do you need in RL?
ALL OF THEM!

EDIT: On a more serious note though, with this threaded gl variable I'm now getting 450ish frames in main menu, and 350-450 in free play, it drops a bit in a real game of course, but those are still significant improvements especially for an old i5 750 + 980 =)

I have a highly configured ini file (with a lot of graphics turned down low or off) and this way the native client (with no graphics) outperforms d9vk (with full graphics) for me, however when you turn up the graphics that's where d9vk really shines (quite literally, with all the graphics everything just shines way too much, how can anyone play like that? :p), it's really impressive how it could easily hold 144 frames constantly on my old hardware (i5 750, gtx980), where in native if you put everything on, I can barely get 60. I also get better performance in native with the old 390.87 driver compared to newer ones.

But I've never heard of opengl_threaded_optimizations before, when was it implemented, would it work in 390.87? Or does it require a newer driver?

Psyonix have put up a roadmap of what's coming next for Rocket League

I think that's a bit of wishful thinking, the purchase hasn't even gone through yet as far as I know, or if it has it was very recent long before the patch came, since their patches are generally in the pipeline for a long time.

They've been trying to do HDR audio and I think that's what was causing greater issues for us, but windows users too experienced some weirdness, but it wasn't until they committed fully to implementing the new audio change-over that everything went to hell, the salty shores audio bug went to every single map for us, and for windows users they got some really weird and bad audio too (though not to our extent), and then psyonix reverted the whole audio bit to pre-messing-about version, so it was the windows users shouting that 'fixed' the bug for us (by not fixing it and just avoiding it), however as they announced they're going to try again with the HDR audio... I'm generally optimistic, but psyonix does not have the best track record when it comes to this.

But once the purchase does go through, I fully expect epic to pour in developers and support for psyonix to take rocket league to UE4. It makes sense that they'd want their flagship esports title to showcase the newest engine (and while it's just my personal speculation, I assume that the biggest reason epic wanted rocket league was because of the already established esports presence and base, since they need something to compete with valve and dota, and blizzard and overwatch, and whatever has the new apex legends).

It would be nice to have a vulkan backend for rocket league, this kind of goes hand in hand with osx deprecating opengl, and the osx client for rocket league being opengl, I think it would be counter-productive to try to make a metal backend for an UE3 osx client.

But hey, all this is personal speculation.

Quoting: EikeWould they decrease the complexity?
It's not really about the complexity, it might seem like that from the outside, but if you get the game and start it up it won't be complex, it will expand at the pace you expand, it'll be as complex as you make it. And of course playing together with friends is great. Don't fear trying it out based on the worry of complexity.

I don't know about that, but I know S2 games used mumble as their voice chat in at least savage2 hon and strife, and it was good.

Rocket League can now be played online across Steam and all major consoles

I guess we could call it a lock-in, but I think it's honestly more about "this login service already exists, so we don't have to re-create this aspect", so maybe a little lazy, or maybe they're just dealing with so many platforms where the platform itself handles the user-management. But like I said you could raise the issue with them and ask them to put it up via gog, with the rocket id implementation it might just make the effort less significant enough to where they'd put it up on gog willingly, with a little prodding.

Quoting: x_wingI think that the last time I tried to run RL solely, it required to have the steam client running. So, from Shmerl perspective, there is a DRM.
I obviously can't say when you last tried that, only you can, but I can tell you that it is definitely possible to launch rocket league without having steam running and has been for quite some time; you don't get access to anything that requires a login to their servers, but you can still use free practice or play against bots, etc. I'm no expert on DRM, but I believe that means it doesn't actually have any DRM.

Quoting: ShmerlThat was my guess above as well, i.e. them having some issue with DRM-free idea. But @pete910 was very insistent it's not the reason.
I don't think there's any particular DRM implemented, you could copy my RL dir and launch it yourself, the game will start and run you just won't be connected to their servers (which does go through steamworks in some fashion I believe), but you could run the free practice mode (which is very nice too, a very zen experience, plus it makes you way better at the game itself) or play against bots. Just the nature of being an online game kind of removes the need for DRM. The next patch is supposed to come with their own user-handling system they've named "Rocket ID", so that people from all platforms will be able to party up regardless of the underlying platform's inherent user-management. But honestly, I think they're just fine with letting steam handle the initial login, rather than making their own login screen so I wouldn't bet on it, but you could contact them and ask, never hurts.
