Heroes of Newerth drops support for Linux and Mac

Whatever S2's faults, they were always a staunch supporter of Linux, with all their games having support all the way back to the original Savage, and every patch was always released for all platforms (mostly) without a hitch. Two months ago or so S2 shut down their irc server and took down the Strife servers, and closed shop. It's really sad, HoN was the first moba I played, and while it was difficult to get started, and toxicity was rife, it was still an amazingly fun game. Then Strife came out which made it waaaay more accessible to the less leet players like myself. Over time Strife got mired in decisions that catered to the 'pro' scene, and undid many of the aspects that made Strife such a hit initially, and as the less pro players left, then finally the stupid 'pro' scene went away as well. HoN was good, but Strife was better, so amazing and such fun, and I will miss it greatly :(

S2's commitment to Linux remains one of the strongest we've ever had from a game company, the only one that rivals it is Valve themselves. RIP S2, RIP Strife, RIP HoN, RIP Savage.

Rocket League updated with progression tweaks and a second Rocket Pass

Quoting: GuestThey could make Rocket League 2, on Unreal Engine 4
I think you're right and you're wrong; RL is too big and successful to make RL2, you'd end up splitting the playerbase for what is essentially only a graphics update, because the gameplay would remain the same.

However, if you permit some personal speculation and conjecture (there is absolutely no facts to back up what I'm saying), I do believe that they are probably currently in the process of bolting RL onto UE4, and will eventually just release a big UE4 transition patch. When they ported RL to the switch, the switch had no support for UE3 at all, and they had to do a lot of manual retrofitting for it to run. UE4 runs fine on the switch, so it makes sense to assume that they incorporated at least elements of UE4. So they put in all this work, so why stop there? Why not just continue and do a full on UE4 conversion, this would future-proof RL as well, graphically. So that's my theory, and my hope, a nice vulkan backend for RL =)

Steam Link hardware officially walks the plank, there's an app for that

Have they also discontinued the steam controller? The potentiometer for the analog stick in mine is only half-functioning at this point and I was looking around to get a new one, but no stores seem to carry it anymore, and the amazon ones are listed at 100 euros which is insane.

Rocket League's Halloween event is live, cross-platform 'RocketID' feature delayed and more news

Quoting: LeopardWow , didn't expect that.
The Salty Shores map has been broken on the OpenGL client since its release which was several months ago, they've issued several major patches since then but the map has remained broken. It was semi-broken for all other platforms as well in terms of performance (most players experienced framedrops on it, on any platform), which is usually the case for newly implemented maps. However the last big patch completely removed Salty Shores from all map rotations, Psyonix listened to the tremendous amount of complaints this map received and it is no longer loaded in any matchmaking playlist (ranked or unranked), though you can select it yourself in free play or private match however.

What I found absolutely stunning was the UI improvement in the 1.50 patch, navigating the menus was lagged and clunky before (something I never even knew about until I went over to a friend's house and tried RL on his win machine, the ui was smooth as butter), but with 1.50 this changed and we have a fully responsive interface now. Woop woop.

Egosoft to launch X4: Foundations on November 30th, hopefully with a Linux beta build
1 Oct 2018 at 4:39 pm UTC

Which order do you play the X games in? I bought X3: Reunion, X3: Terran Conflict and X3: Albion Prelude long ago but never got around to playing them, at the time I was hoping Egosoft would re-release their own X2 first, which sadly never happened. Is it still possible to get a hold of the old lgp x2? Would it even run today? But even if I skip X2, which order do I play all my X3s in?

Valve have released some interesting statistics about controller use

Quoting: GuestI routinely would have the camera go haywire in Rocket League any time the side of my thumb touched the right touchpad
Default settings for Rocket League using steam controller is atrocious, but it doesn't take a whole lot of effort to make it nice; (disclaimer: in my opinion) Change the right touchpad from "joystick camera" to "joystick move", just this change will make it muuuch more natural to use, I also have an inner deadzone 3 blips from 0 and a maxed outer deadzone. Ff you're accidentally hitting the outer edge of the touchpad a lot you can create a deadzone area that follows the outer edge, I used to do this because I tripped it a lot too, it takes some majiggering with inner and outer deadzones to create this border but it does work. For me one day I stopped accidentally hitting it though, so now I only keep the inner deadzone. Combine this with adjusting the ingame setting "camera swivel speed" to find your sweet spot.

EDIT: I should mention that I also prioritize horizontal (100%) movement over vertical (50%), which helps keep the camera from going everywhere when you're looking for teammates.

Quoting: KimyrielleThe toolset IS NWN. The actual game is not all that good, really. What made NWN great was the ability to make your own games.
If you just want to get a game to play, then the game is the game, you get 3 campaigns plus their little one-off maps like kingmaker, and all campaigns are well worth it and very enjoyable. If you want to extend the game then there are literally hundreds of campaigns already created by players, some of them are extremely good rivalling the original campaign even. So while you may not use the toolset, you're getting an insane amount of gaming. The toolset served its purpose long ago, but I'm not sure a release of an enhanced edition can garner a new revolution of NWN campaigns, so take the game for what it is, a crazy amount of already produced material which you can keep playing for a loooooong time.

Quoting: Mountain ManIn fact, it was BioWare's original intent to sell just the toolset and rely 100% on the community to create the content. They changed this plan at the last minute and threw together the single player campaign because they feared nobody would buy the game otherwise, which is why the campaign is so lackluster
That doesn't sound accurate at all, the original campaign is hardly lackluster, it's huge in scope with a vast array of voice talent and certainly not something just thrown together at the last minute. While waiting for NWN I don't remember at any point when they were going to just release a toolset, from the very beginning they had the campaign in mind and they even wanted it to run on BeOS. If anything was a bit lackluster it was shadows of undrentide, but hordes of the underdark is another massive story like the original campaign. At no point did they fear nobody would buy the game.

Quoting: GuestAre these turn-based games
Yes and no, it's designed to feel real-time and combat etc doesn't stop and let you think (though in singleplayer you can pause the game), but it has a turn based back-end (you have a little log window where you can see everything that happens in each round.
