Epic Games CEO says a clear No to Fortnite on Steam Deck
8 Feb 2022 at 10:29 am UTC

Quoting: JahimselfWhen windows 8.1 and the microsoft store system came out, Tim Sweeney said it will kill the video game industry, and then he follows that exact pattern to try to kill video game industry with epic store, and when an opportunity arise to get out of this system he just doesn't get involved.
That is...an amazing leap in logic. If memory serves, they were against UWP apps and all the issues that entails; proprietary ways of making games that aren't easily distributable in other stores bar the Microsoft store and Xbox, acting like a form of DRM. Not surprisingly, this caused a lot of backlash, and Sweeney was not the only one against UWP and Mike's store. I remember the Linux community also complaining, rightly, that UWP acts as DRM to lock games to one platform and OS; Windows. Microsoft, in a rare sense of self-awareness, course corrected and UWP was scaled back to be more about leveraging Xbox and PC cross-compatibility, which has garnered more favorable press.

The epic store by comparison is an underfeatured launcher which has exclusives that only stop the game being on steam, and nowhere else. It can be on GOG, Microsoft Store, other consoles, just not Steam. It's not even in the same ballpark for comparisons, and that is in no way killing the videogame industry, if anything forcing players to use multiple storefronts reinvigorates a once-stagnant scene. Say what you want about the method, but it did have an effect.

Quoting: Doc AngeloI'm not buying it. Sweeney says a lot of stupid stuff to win an argument. Especially around Linux.

"Sweeney is not saying it's not suitable as a whole, just that Fortnite is a massive target for cheaters"

I rest my case. This is so stupid, I'm out of words. Who believes crap like that?

(I want to add that I'm not saying that Sweeney is generally dumb or doesn't have knowledge about game development. I'm just saying that he has a very strong opinion, and starts to lie his way through an argument until he thinks he won it. There are people like that, and Sweeney is just one example. He's human after all.)
How is he using lies in this situation? Fortnite is popular, the threat model he describes makes a lot of sense. It would absolutely attract cheaters and people who would would gain infamy for making "the first cheats on Fortnite that runs under Proton/Wine", so I'm a little unsure where you're going with this? Even if you don't like Sweeney, not everything he says is untrue. As the saying goes; "a broken clock is right twice a day".

Quoting: dubigrasuSo, Fortnite?
If memory serves, it uses EAC and BattlEye, and switches between the two. I could be very wrong.

Netflix is getting into video games, so we'll have another cloud gaming service

Quoting: InterloperHonestly, after the Cuties incident [External Link], Netflix should not get any kind of publicity.

Nefarious and disgusting company. I hope they fail.

They made a terrible poster - let's not throw the whole company out over one bad marketing decision. If you have an issue with the movie itself, I suggest you read this [External Link] to at least get a picture of why it exists.
That defense is absolute hogwash. She is either dishonest and knew exactly what they were doing, or she seriously has the most flawed logic on this planet.

"Something is bad, so let's make a movie doing EXACTLY what we think is bad to show how bad it is"
Can't wait for their next movie where they actually kick and shoot puppies to show bad it is to kick and shoot puppies.
Or what about gun violence? Other, even more despicable acts?
Where's the line in what can be done to people in order to create a media product?
I'll tell you: The line was a few dozen kilometers before Cuties and they went over it with a nitro boost.

The whole company defended this disgusting piece of media and can be safely described as disgusting as a result, as can anyone else defending sexualization of minors.

But, honestly, you don't even need any of that to not like Netflix.
Them cancelling everything left and right that doesn't have the very highest viewership numbers is more than enough reason to not waste your money, IMO.
Just sub for maybe a month, watch what you want, then unsub again - if it really has to be.
Film is a visual medium. You need to show the bad thing to criticise the bad thing. You can't exactly fight systemic racism in a TV show without showing it in a TV show. Show us the bad thing, and say why it's wrong, otherwise it gets lost in translation even easier.

The sexualisation of minors is despicable....which is what this film's message is.

As for Netflix cancelling shows left and right. Well yeah, that's how a lot of networks and services work. Believe it or not, Netflix does actuyally have an operating budget, and has to cancel stuff to either make something new, or to simply save money. And if anything, Netflix has saved far more shows than it's cancelled, and unless the show is extremely unpopular, most series' get a second season on the service.

Valve to lose $4 million for patent infringement with the Steam Controller
3 Feb 2021 at 12:38 pm UTC

In this comment section: "It's corsair and the patent offices fault! Valve did nothing wrong!"

Patents like the one Corsair Gaming holds are legitimate because Paddles on a normal controller hadn't been done before, and it's pretty reasonable for them to patent that kind of design functionality. Patent fraud only really applies to stuff that is insanely generic, or impossible to make, neither of which qualifies this paddles patent. It's no different to patenting a specific controller design.

Valve are not your friends, please stop trying to blame literally everyone but the company doing the wrong.

A lot of what is rightly criticized about Fortnite originates from their effective control of the company
Tencent don't have any "effective control" over Fortnite. They get a say, sure, but others in the Board of Directors can Veto, which is the furthest thing from effective control as you can get.

Quoting: sudoerHow would anyone support a company that was a happy and proud anti-PC for over a decade, has done nothing for Linux AT ALL -on the contrary they even killed Linux for Rocket League, remember: "As we continue to upgrade Rocket League with new technologies", we all know what those "technologies" are, Epic Online Services- and it's clear by now that it is just a (the) Chinese front (throwing millions of chinese money to buy exclusives instead of really competing) blows my mind. Not to speak about its leading persona as a character.
They make a game engine with Linux support, and have given funding grants to Lutris.

I really doubt Epic is a chinese front, bust sure, i'll let you stew in your conspiracy.

Quoting: DribbleondoHow would Linux games be collateral, exactly?
Easy to see, isn't it?

If they lock their IDEs/Assets/Tools down to EPIC store, which is not on Linux, then there will be less games working on Linux.
Even Linux native Titles will not be present any more.

So that may be (perhaps this does never happen), a massive damage to Linux gaming.
That was a rhetorical question; which should've been obvious as I explained why this wouldn't be the case immediately after said question.
