Missed your Steam Deck email? Valve confirms a grace period to still get one

Just got the Steam Deck email yesterday, fortunately the payment worked fine but it's insane thinking that they are only processing orders just a few hours after the sale opening!
I'm wondering why that 72 hours time limit instead of just letting order slide down the queue until order is fully paid. There must be a marketing reason I assume.

I remember when the Steam Deck was announced there were some worries that Valve would have pushed developers to mainly target Proton but it seems that's not the case :) (about at 3:02:30 in the youtube video)

[...]
Kaci Aitchison: About Proton and native Linux support, would you prefer games to use Proton or to have native Linux support?

Pierre-Loup Griffais: We have no strong preference. Really it comes down to whatever is the best experience. If it's easier for the developer to get to a point where the best experience is achieved through Proton that's great, but if they have the know-how and resources to work on a native Linux build that has great experience, all the functionality and they are able to maintain it we think that's even better.
[...]

And I really like how they nonchalantly drop Linux jargon all over in the video, it just puts me in good mood :)

Microsoft Edge comes to Linux in October as a preview

More native software for Linux can be good but Microsoft has a history of imposing their policies on users, effectively trying to manage the PC for them (or even assuming they have the right to free access on user data), which I'm sure can be fine for normal users which don't care much or at all about privacy and security, but I'm not sure it fits the normal Linux user mentality. Anyway, there is no doubt Microsoft is expecting to gain something from this move, only time will tell if is the consumer will gain or lose from it.

GOL SteamOS & Linux Survey results for February

I would like to thank Feds once again for doing the graphs for us.
You're welcome, glad I can help :)
Unfortunately coffee can substitute sleep only up to a certain level so this time I haven't implemented any visible improvement, maybe next time!

Darkest Dungeon Linux port is practically ready, releasing soon

Great! Another Kickstarter off the list... I promised myself to not pledge until I have all games deliverer. Jon Shafer's At the Gates is the black sheep at the moment.
They should change the definition of patience in the dictionary: "Linux user that pledges on Kickstarter", Yoda is a noob in comparison ;)

p.s. I know the rule, don't buy until game is out, I was young and naive at that time :)

New Linux & SteamOS gamer survey for March
1 Mar 2016 at 6:56 pm UTC

Quoting: Stupendous ManJust a heads up, the survey doesn't display correctly if you have Privacy Badger activated. All the surveys have worked until this one, I don't know what has changed.
I use Privacy Badger as well and it gives no problem. All sliders on yellow on the survey page (I haven't whitelisted anything). Maybe the plugin in your machine has detected a trackers that mine hasn't yet?

p.s. it would be great to be tracked by the survey so I wouldn't have to select the same answers every month!!

Valve rep mentions they will eventually survey Big Picture & SteamOS

Quoting: Mountain ManI guarantee that Valve knows exactly how many people are using Linux and SteamOS. They need to be able to track that information to make sure the right developers get paid, so I've never been entirely clear on the point of the hardware survey.
It's either another way to collect data or a long term study on the effect of sharing some statistics about hardware, or who knows? This video Steam Dev Days 2014 - Data to Drive Decision-Making [External Link] gives some insight on how we are guinea pigs for Valve ;)

Our Linux & SteamOS gamer survey results for January 2016

Quoting: khalismuri) When working with normalized data (as in this case) the axis which refer to the distribution, the %, should have a fixed scale along all graphs for easier understanding. The vertical axis in this case was automatically generated for every graph I suppose, but fixing the top value to 100% would be much better;
I'd rather stick to the rule that graph space must be used efficiently. There is no reason to compare graphs side by side anyway so different scale shouldn't affect readability. Of course if the general consensus is to to go up to 100% regardless of the maximum value I'll be happy to comply.

Quoting: khalismurii) Makes absolutely no sense to work with more than two or three significant figures. "0.56%", "1.4%", "25%" or even "5.78%" are fine. Now, "78.94%" makes no sense.
Any one else would like to shoot at the 4th significative digit? ;)
