AMD Radeon RX 6800 and the RX 6800 XT are out today

Quoting: Valck
Quoting: iskaputtgood availability [...] 500 Euros
Not going to happen if the lowest model comes at USD 580.-. Usually that directly translates to €580.-, so I doubt you'll see anything below 600 Euros, and much less five hundred, anytime soon. Add to that the bot resellers, and you're in for a long wait.

You are very likely right, sadly.

Will continue to use my Vega 56 which I bought for 400 and is serving me well. An upgrade would be nice for 4K, but no way in hell am I going to pay 50% more for my next card.

Looking good on the performance side. Hoping for good availability now, 500 Euros is my threshold this time.

Edit: Also very happy about the driver situation this time.

Did anyone try this with a plain (tiling) window manager yet? I can't get it to work properly in DWM. Most things don't even start with `(EE) failed to read Wayland events: Broken pipe` and the one thing that does start (vkcube) doesn't use the expected resolution. Tried both current master and 3.7.

I'm pretty excited for the 6000 series, currently rocking a Vega 56 and the new cards might be able to finally double the 4K performance. Just hoping that the driver situation this time is better than before with Vega and the 5000 series. IIRC it took about 6 or more month for proper support for those cards (please correct me if I remember wrongly).

Tried it in alacritty and found the performance to be pretty bad. Each stat update froze the whole UI for a moment, making it unresponsive to input as well. And it took about 3 seconds to fully start. It does look fancy though, but that is subjective.

Sounds nifty. Does it work properly with adaptive sync? That has always been my main gripe with OBS. The moment I enable window capture, FreeSync stops working.

An update on Easy Anti-Cheat support for Wine and Proton
20 June 2020 at 7:17 pm UTC

Do cheaters really care about the OS they are playing on?

Right now we are in a situation where developing cheats might be similarly difficult to implement on Linux compared to Windows (I'm not into that scene, so I don't know for sure), but the games don't even work on Linux in the first place. So implementing any kind of cheat is rendered moot by that fact.

If it turns out that cheating is less likely to be detected via Wine (which is the concern as I understand), there is little reason for it to not be exploited. Now if I remember correctly from a post by a cheat and later anti-cheat developer I read some time ago, there are cheats involving virtualization and hypervisor stuff (this appears to be the reason for anti-cheat on Windows becoming more and more rootkit like) which I'd assume is way more complicated to set up than installing a free Linux distribution and playing through Wine.

Meaning the real fear is not that suddenly the <1% Linux gaming community starts cheating, but the 10% (for a random number that came up in this thread before) of the 99% Windows players to switch to Linux for their cheating desires. Because it is (then) easier and safer.

PS: Yes, I ignored the Mac share.

Raspberry Pi 4 goes 8GB, plus new 64bit OS

Quoting: GuestSo you could now run full performance 64-bit windows on this thing or what?

I mean I'll take 64-bit linux any day of course, but windows would make for some interesting gaming benchmarks :D

Problem is that you'd need to compile and optimize the games for ARM. So it might be feasible for some FOSS games, but it's unlikely to happen for any proprietary game (those are all x86).

Nonetheless an interesting idea :)

Quoting: DuncI don't have a good quality DAC, but I just tested my cheap and nasty one on my 2GB Pi4, and it seems as good as it ever was. I wouldn't take that as definitive, but I didn't hear any clicks, dropouts, or anything like that, at least. (I think I know the sort of thing you're talking about, because I do have problems sometimes when switching outputs on my main desktop. Oh, and before anyone pitches in, yes, I've probably tried that. Fragment size, tsched... I know all about it.)

The built-in audio on the recent Pis is a lot better than it used to be, actually. But I know that sometimes “good enough” isn't... well, good enough. :)

Quoting: ioangogoYes, although i have found I²S DAC hats much better like a hifiberry

Quoting: brokeassbenThere are a couple companies that make "hats" for the Pi (and possibly Odroid) like JustBoom or DigiOne for people who are into an "audiophile" level sound on their Pi.

Possibly not what you're looking for, but I trust this guy's opinions when it comes to audio and he has a fairly in-depth article and video on using the RP as a DAC. The article is written from audio nerd's perspective rather than a tech or linux enthusiast's.

Thanks for the replies. My USB DAC is a fairly cheap one for about 50 Euros, so I wouldn't consider myself an audiophile (though I do appreciate decent audio equipment, just not over-the-top stuff), but I find such "external sound cards" very convenient.

A dedicated DAC hat seems nice, looks pretty slick on the hifiberry with the metal case. But that would cost me some money again.

Best course might be to get a naked RPI and check if my current USB DAC works properly, check the 3.5mm jack as a fallback and if both don't work out, look for a hat with a nice case.

Does anyone use one of these things with a USB DAC? I have an Odroid C2 and audio via USB has been broken since forever. Tried about every distribution under the sun, but all produce some kind of noise or clicks in the audio output.

My plan was to have a multimedia station with batteries included. Kodi, MPD, RetroArch and maybe some server applications like Mumble. I want to connect the audio to my old stereo.
