Worms Reloaded looks set to hit Linux
21 Jul 2013 at 12:03 pm UTC

You can't really compare Liero to Worms, but yes, Hedgewars is awesome. :D It's nearly as good as Worms Armaggeddon, which in my view was the peak of the series

I like it compared to the previous, but...

... Twitter Bootstrap? Seriously? It is painfully overused. At least do a little bit to remove the obvious Twitter-like theming. It's friggin' everywhere (in the OSS world, at least) these days.

Folk Tale a sandbox fantasy city builder heading to Linux on Steam!

Looks a lot like Stronghold: Crusader (but with magic)! It was the first RTS I ever played, and still one of my all-time favourites. :D

If this turns out good and similar to Stronghold, it will be a must-buy for me.

'Alien Arena', an in-depth developers' interview - Part I
8 Jun 2013 at 3:25 pm UTC

Nice interview. I must disagree with John on a few points though:

  • The engine could be a lot better. They have surprisingly good visuals in some aspects, but feel 1998-ish in others. Particularly, the guns have always felt like they do in Quake 2 or Doom. The bullets that fly out of the gun feel really disjointed. It's just weird to see them travel in the way they do.

  • Physics are missing. The formats they use don't help with this at all - and physics programming is extremely hard of course. That said, there are excellent open source physics libraries they can use with little to no effort, with lots of documentation and practical examples of other id Tech-based games using them.

  • The UX is horrendous. This is an area where Unreal Engine 3 - he dares to compare CRX to it, which uses Scaleform, has a massive, massive advantage over Alien Arena. UI elements aren't very uniform and have the crappy menus typical of 1990s Quake games where the UI was completely separate. What you need is to plumb in a toolkit like CEGUI and build a modern UX, as currently, it is massively prohibitive to people playing. One person outright deleted it as soon as they saw the unresponsiveness, low resolution and general badness of the interface. As it stands, this is the primary reason Alien Arena is not seeing more people playing it.

Other than that, I admire the effort very much and I wish John and his team the best for the future.

Tripwire on why Red Orchestra 2 and Rising storm won't come to Linux just yet
24 May 2013 at 10:26 am UTC

Quoting: Xpanderwith Default FoV there were some texture issues on some maps (white textures on the ground and stuff like that)
but after increasing FoV to my liking (105) the issues dissapeared
Yes, this is what I was talking about. It significantly worsens the experience.

I'll try this when I get home, thank you!

Tripwire on why Red Orchestra 2 and Rising storm won't come to Linux just yet

Damn it Icculus! You and your vague promises and your broken port of Killing Floor (on NVIDIA GPUs only). I'm glad I didn't buy RO2 in advance.

Well, that sucks then. I understand the reasoning though, and Tripwire has done much to support Linux - but UE3 was obviously quite prohibitive to the task of porting to Linux for all devs using it.

INSURGENCY team-based realistic FPS coming to Linux
26 Apr 2013 at 12:00 pm UTC

Beyond all that, I think we should all stop being pedants and speak about the damn game. :) I for one am very happy this is coming to Linux as I love FPS games, especially the quasi-realistic type (sims never did it for me). :D
