Quoting: CybolicIt's honestly baffling to me how both the games and the audience seem perfectly fine with fantasy cock/dog fights; am I missing something?
I really hope so, because my faith in human kind is alerady at minimum levels.
I've ethical problems with factorio too which seems a great game from the demo.
DAMN!
I was going to hold off on saying something because i was concerned how the conversation would go but ...
Let me play devil's advocate for a bit.
It's a game.
It's not real.
GTA has you play a gangster that can run over civilians and police officers by the hundreds. Nobody who plays that game wants to do that in real life.
I recently played Underrail where one mission for a proto-fascist faction asked me to gas some rebels. That doesn't mean I'm ok with crimes against humanity.
I don't mean to seem disrispectful but it really does sound the same as the argument that playing D&D puts you in league with the devil.
Yes yes, i know it is a game and it is not real, that's the first thing i wrote in my first reply, but imho the real fun is when game and reality blends, i like to be empathic with a group of pixels, yes.
For me, gaming is immersion; i don't like to play just for the sake of finish the game and i don't like gaming if i cannot impersonate the character.
I remember when i was a kid playing adventures without actually progressing in the story, but i was so fully immersed in the virtual world, that just walking into it was a lot of fun.
Now things are turning different, and my imagination isn't that way anymore, so i really need to like the character to pretend i am him, or else, no fun.

Sorry for that, i can understand that other people are better than me in having fun in doing bad things they never should do in real life.
Uhm dude , nobody is saying they are better than you.
I personally just disagree with your reasoning on this one topic , that's all.
If you think the game bothers you or is a bad influence on your children , by all means avoid it. No beef from me on that front.
I can understand immersion but i guess it is on a case by case basis. Someone might be repulsed by a game like GTA or Mortal Kombat , someone might not even notice the violence or context and just aim for the highest points.

Ron Gilbert, developer of Thimbleweed Park is switching to Linux

Was the engine to the original Thimbleweed Park ever released to the public ?
Was always curios to tinker in that.
And since the game has a linux candidate was hoping the engine works under it as well.

I get your point but I don't usually enjoy games that portray realistic violence as "fun" either unless the setting or presentation puts it firmly in make-believe territory. As for D&D, I still wouldn't enjoy a campaign where the focus was to enslave and abuse non-humanoid creatures, just like I imagine most people wouldn't (reactions to animals getting hurt in film or animation is a good example) - I'm just surprised that it seems that the thin veneer of "no no, these animals enjoy mauling each other" is enough for most people to not have that same gut reaction.
I respect that.
Context does matter and how violence is portraied matters.
This game is not out yet , so can't really say what the context will be.
As for other franchises like Pokemon , not really sure. Haven't been that big a fan over the years to really say. But i recall the pokemon could not be forced and they were stubborn to their trainers. The whole vibe i got as a kid was a kind of boxing setting where you train the fighters. Maybe the developers of such games side step the more unsavory aspects or maybe we are reading to much into them.

Orcs Must Die! 3 on Stadia is a vibrant and thoroughly entertaining romp
25 Jul 2020 at 5:00 pm UTC

I used to love playing Orcs Must Die 2 with my mates back in the day.
But there is no way in heck I'm buying a Stadia release for this game.
Sad they plan to port it only to windows afterwards :(

General Horse and the Package of Doom might be the dumbest FMV I've ever played

This reminds me of a demo i played of a game with Rob Schneider called "A fork in the tale"
Was a silly little game but not sure if it ever got fully released
Think i may have seen some full versions "unofficially"
