Steam Deck gets a 15FPS option, new keyboard themes

Quoting: PublicNuisancePlaying at 15FPS is being pushed as a benefit ? We're truly entering console levels of stupidity. I remember when console kids were trying to argue that being limited to 30 FPS was better for art. I'll stick with my 144hz screen thank you very much.

If those 15fps can give you better battery life in games that don't need more? Hell yea, it's a benefit. Or should the Deck go balls to the walls with power and burn battery in simple 2D games? Is that what you think should be done with a handheld device? Nobody here is arguing that 15fps is "enough" or "better for art", you are arguing your own assumptions. It can be enough for a chess game though for example. Don't know why a 2D game of chess should run at 60 or even 30 fps. Personally, I would actually like full ability to set my fps cap at any value from 1fps to 60fps.

Liam, could you make a video to showcase those 15fps? Maybe showing 1) a game where it is completely fine, 2) game where it makes a visual difference, but the gameplay is still okay and 3) one instance where it is not good experience to just see what 15fps can't do, but also what kind of battery life it can provide. Would be nice to show a comparison running demanding game that goes full throttle in 60fps, and then measure 30fps and 15fps and what are the differences in power consumption.

Quoting: elmapulyou wait 10 years to play an game, then the argument become:
oh, its an old game, no one play it anymore.

yeah, it wasnt so old back then ¬¬
"not even linux users play it"
maybe we would if it runs.

You are taking my words out of context though. I never specified that this necessarily concerns old games, if those old games used to be popular then they are still highly visible, even if maybe more down the line then current popular games (obviously). VVVVVV is 12 years old game, it already has rating. Last year came out over 11000 games of which unspecified number is probably not even relevant (removed, or only chinnese), but only 4000 of them had at least 10 or more peak players and about 6000 have at least 10 or more (sum of all) reviews (numbers according to SteamDB).

Quoting: elmapul... but its frustrating to wait so long for something to work, only to realize it was in vain.
What do you mean? How is rating related to something (game?) working? Is the game not runnable currently? I might be misunderstanding your frustration, but you do know that you can play games that are not yet rated, right?

Quoting: SolitaryRealistically, there is no rush to cover entire catalogue, because not all games are being actually played or have been played by any significant number of gamers in recent time (especially if those games are not a good fit for Deck anyways). Nobody really waits for the Deck rating of the Asset Flip #345: The Sequel. If Valve rates all games that cover 95% (or more) of all Steam users/owners they are good as finished and that might not be such a big task, the rest they can slowly do over the years or just change the methodology by then.

The number of games is inflated, let's be honest.

i agree that assetflips dont make a difference, but there is a bunch of high quality games that people dont play anymore because they already got tired of the countless hours playing it or moved to sequels

that is especially bad for those like me who waited those games to run on linux to play then.

Linux gamers aren't that different from other people. If some game is so dead that nobody has been playing it then I doubt there is any significant number of Linux gamers waiting for it... and waiting for Deck rating of all, not the game itself. Also if it was highly played (countless hours) game then it does not fit in my description, that's a game with probably high count of owners and playtime... and will be or probably is already rated.

I might obviously be off in my expectations. But I think I can quite confidently say that 95% of ownership/playtime of games does not equal to 95% of Steam library, but what is the real number is what decides how much work Valve has to do to make the coverage so high that the actual numbers stop being relevant.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyOK, so the article saying they hit a thousand games came out 5 days ago. So, 5 days to do 200 games, pace of 40 games/day.

That's not bad. But at that pace, in a year they would do 14,600 games. How many games are in the Steam catalogue again? And how many come out in a year these days? They need to ramp it up a bit if they want to be able to say anything about the Deck running all your games.

I browsed through the list of included content, and the bundle made another million during that time! At the time of writing, it now stands at $730,905.44.
The goal is a million. You are reading the number wrong. But apparently in those 2 hours since your comment it went up another 175k.

Quoting: SolitarySo there is no application overlay for repository installed applications (like Fedora Silverblue does for example)? That kinda limits the use of the desktop
I have no idea what you're talking about here honestly. Got an example?
Well, Fedora Silverblue still allows you to install RPM packages from standard repositories in the read-only filesystem, but it works as "overlay". Basically those extra apps are installed/layered on top of the base system, so the system update re-imagining does not delete them. Looking at it, it might be OSTree feature though.

Quoting: EikeDid I understand correctly that enabling developer mode (or something alike) would allow me to install KDEConnect easily? I love that little one.
Technically yes, but anything you do in developer mode can be and likely will be entirely overwritten by OS upgrades. Anything you do that you want to stick, should use Flatpaks or direct downloads for ease of use. Unless you want to get much more complicated.

Steam Deck Verified and Playable hit a thousand games

Quoting: SolitaryThere is quite a lot of games that seemingly work, but are labeled as Unsupported. Supraland for example, even though the standalone DLC Six Inches Under is Verified.

Speaking for this game specifically I asked the developers two years ago why they dropped and deleted the Linux native version and they said:

"we support proton. the native solution was bad and is dropped
low fps for reasons we cannot change"

I asked them last week "Wait what happened to the proton version?" And they said:

"i don't understand what's going on. we offer no proton version. but steamdeck seems to try to run everything using proton
valve says it has hitches"

They also clarified that siu is using a newer engine version and dx12 instead of dx11.

Well, the native build was bad... I had played and 100% completed the game before the poor native version even came to exist and it ran great even back then. Checking now, the game still works just fine.
