By "learning", again, I didn't meaning "know how to compile stuff etc.", but for example just be able to add a PPA and install the software needed after that as usual.
I mean it's pretty simple and will not take hours to do it (you can do that in GUI, without the terminal I think).
Did you never add a PPA on your system? I just want to understand et be sure we understand each other. :wink:

Out of curiosity, why is Proton a bad thing? I recently got my Steam Deck and haven't noticed any major performance dip using it compared to native??? It's a genuine question, I'm new to Linux and I'm trying to learn the basics.

Yes it is. Not all apps will be in the repositories... there will be always apps like this that you could only install outside of them, be it: compilation, or a PPA, or a Snap/flatpak/AppImage package etc.
That's what I meant by basic things, understand that some apps are only available outside of repos and, if wanted, how to install them the easy way for you.
One you done it one time... and some times, it'll become easier.
It's really not difficult, you don't have to get a degree in IT (I don't have one).
You have to start somewhere though, not an issue, learn step by step. :wink:
But the real question maybe is: do you want to learn? :tongue:

You need to learn/understand some basic things about all of this, and after it won't be difficult as it seems. :wink:
But for now, the easiest way for you, as you're on Ubuntu, is to install it via PPA really, how to here:

DevilutionX is an opensource engine to let you play Diablo 1 natively on Linux, or any other platform/OS (they have Switch, 3DS, Amiga, Android, iOS, macOS, PS4, PS Vita...).

Their "How to" is pretty simple here:

You can download their appimage file for Linux too, maybe it's the simplest method.

Or you can use/install Lutris, open it and search for game scripts to install on the search bar for Diablo.
Chose the one "GOG + DevilutionX version" and Lutris do the thing for you.

But I didn't use any of these myself, I just compiled the software (from the AUR = Arch User Repository) and it works fine too.

Are you new to the Linux world? Welcome!

PS: but you do need to have bought Diablo 1 on GOG thought, or the original CD, the engine will not work without it. Or use the shareware version but not the entire game.

Last time I tried I still had issues with kernels 6.2 and 6.3 on my desktop, it seems to boot but X doesn't start/the screen is "glitchy".
But 6.1 works fine. And on my laptop 6.3 is doing well (same distro).
I might give a try on 6.4...

I don't trust these devs anymore, since their latest game didn't have Linux/macOS versions on GOG but Steam did.
And its seems this new game won't be on GOG at all... so even worse.
