Epic Games looking to make Vulkan the default API for Linux games in Unreal Engine

Quoting: EhvisThey still released Fortnite last week with only Win+Mac support. Do they have Metal support for that or is the OpenGL support actually good enough?

ARK devs already said that OpenGL won't be fixed and that they will switch to Vulkan for that. In ARK time of course.
That would be for Metal API, I don't know if there is an option to run openGL but I doubt it as they were building for Metal for more than a year.
I dont know for sure but Metal is based on vulkan with some changes, wondering how much code change it would take for vulkan version for linux.

Quoting: slaapliedjeThis is the thing here. If Vulkan was a Linux Only API, then it'd probably very rarely get used. The fact that it was being worked on before Metal (it derives from AMD's Mantle), and Apple had stopped supplying newer OpenGL, they were specifically trying to be more anti-competitive to Linux/other BSDs.
No. I've heard this one SO many times. Mantle was only ever, an AMD project for AMD GPU's. AT NO POINT did AMD ever announce that they planned to donate or open it.

Meanwhile, other platform vendors sat and waited for Khronos to announce OpenGL Next... and waited.. and waited. Apple got fed up, and started developing Metal.

THEN Khronos finally announces Vulkan, and that it would be based on AMD's Mantle which AMD decided to donate. Too late. Apple's already committed to Metal. So they shipped Metal. And it works bloody well. Apple are not going to suddenly drop Metal for Vulkan "because".

If you want to blame someone for screwing this pooch, blame Khronos. It is also their indecisiveness and foot dragging that has kept OpenGL behind DirectX for years and years.

you mean apart from in this interview where he gives the rough date of 2014 of mantle being an open source project

Quoting: Guestunfortunately i do not see this getting any better.i mean if we had a game that was linux only and it was a decent game where people would be dying to play it maybe just maybe it would get some interest.i don't want to be negative but i have been watching this the past 2 years and unless something drastic happens with windows 10 where people mass flood away from it we are just gonna be that small market.i so want linux to be huge but people are not giving it a chance or just too afraid to try it.
I agree but there in lies the problem, I came to linux because I tried it out and after time realised I was using it more than windows. Now for gaming I have taken a huge hit by staying on linux I have/had i guess over 300 + games on windows Steam 81 are playable on linux natively. The biggest problem I think still is the image linux has an image of being only for the super super hardcore geek.
I think Linux for the hardcore gamer is a tough sell. There is just not enough triple a support for them to ditch Windows and go 100 percent linux.

Grammar is important. It's the difference between helping your uncle jack off a horse, or, helping your Uncle Jack, off a horse.

Going back to your other post about you not trusting Valve enough to buy from Steam, you don't need to trust them with your bank account, you can simply make a debt card payment and not save info for next time.
Pretty ironic really how you don't trust such a reputable company like Valve, yet you happily put all your trust into Paypal, who are well known for withholding your money until their next audit so they can maximize interest earnings.
I agree grammar is important, when it matters ie not on an internet forum. Yeah I trust paypal more as I have had extensive financial dealings with the group that owns and operates paypal.

Editorial: No, Valve is not killing SteamOS or the Steam Controller

Quoting: elmapul"I sure can ignore any tech I'm not interested in. It's a handy skill, leaves time for fun and games. "
i dont even know what this means.
in any case, if your boss require you to know something, you better know it.
and its not about you, its about another missed opportunity to make the linux desktop rise.

"The tech is still at the questionably useful gimmick level, and its greatest advancement since the first primitive voice control craze in the nineties is how efficiently it ignores the user's privacy and collects data for our corporate overlords."
Like it or not, the best way to know what commands the users want is by analysing what they were trying to say.
that is why we cant have nice things.
we have to respect the user privacy, we have to keep the code open source allow the user to redistribute it, we cant...
everything that is profitable, we cant do.
except sell support for companies, because end users don't pay for such a things.
What his phrase was saying is that because he is not interested in AR he doesn't care. Although he cared enough to post he didn't care about it.

Quoting: Comandante ÑoñardoAbout wine 2.13, I tried the GOG version of Metro 2033 Redux and it doesn't work... with Wine Staging 2.12 the game load with no more than 30 fps and a choppy audio... After a moment, the screen of the game was filled with weird colors.. but the game menu looks fine.. I will try to take a pic.
It's weird that there is no linux version of this game on GOG when it has a port for linux on steam... that's not fair :(
Not that weird saw a few months back an interview with gog when they released the gog version of Fallout 3 and NV that they could not support Linux because they did not have permission from Bethesda to sell the game on any platform apart from windows. It would seem if you want the DRM free version you have to get Deep Silver to agree a deal with CD project to put a linux port up. Also anyone remembers dead island when it came out Deep Silver were saying not there problem with bugs they blamed the porters etc etc

Rusted Warfare, a 2D RTS that reminds me of Total Annihilation & Red Alert is now on Linux
