Quoting: ShmerlI think for an anti-feature, it's good enough to end DLSS. Because it works everywhere and will also get better over time. The other side of it - it's general purpose. While AI/ML is more limited to specific use cases. So it is better in some cases and worse in others. Everything is a trade off.
This sounds like it was written by someone who doesn't understand either of these features. Hardware-assisted AI/ML being "limited" to specific use cases while an upscaling tech being "general purpose"? Give me a break...
Honestly, you sound like you don't know how Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence works. It's typically incredibly focused. Using ML/AI in an implementation of anything doesn't magically make it versatile or flexible.

However, that said, the point of this technology is to enable fast frame rates of complex scenes (potentially with ray tracing thrown in) at high resolutions. That's a pretty focused target. So I'm not really sure why an upscaler like FSR is somehow more "general purpose" than DLSS.

But I agree with Shmerl that FSR can be used anywhere - mobiles, consoles, Windows, Linux, on AMD, Nvidia, ARM, Intel, you name it. So I sincerely hope it does well. DLSS can do well too... for all I care. But I don't care, since I doubt I'll ever buy Nvidia again, unless they start competing with AMD on the open source front. And DLSS doing well only benefits Nvidia.

As someone else has already pointed out, it's G-Sync vs Freesync all over again.

(as an aside, I actively avoided buying a monitor advertising g-sync support recently - it looked like a nice piece of hardware, but I knew that if I bought it, I'd be paying for a feature that would forever be locked from me. This sums up my view on Nvidia right now. Hopefully they change that view by following AMD's example in future)

I've watch Linus Tech Tips do a video on Cyberpunk featuring DLSS and it was underwhelming. When you see it in action side-by-side with the original image, it always suffers in the quality department.

But that's not how you game. You typically only have your one gaming PC and that's what you use. If you can play about with DLSS on/off and 4K vs 1080p, then you'll find your sweet spot.

So FSR is huge news for me. It's DLSS-like enough that I'm excited to try it. Because I went AMD last year, and I ain't going back to Nvidia any time soon. FSR is going to be open source for goodness sake. Absolutely love what AMD is doing right now.

I played the demo and it definitely hit a lot of the right spots. Sometimes a bit frustrating though, and the extra QA will hopefully help with that. Definitely one to watch!

The wasted vertical space on the new Downloads page is insane, but this layout is okay. Looking forward to some of these enhancements landing.

VR is absolutely insane, I am officially a convert and it works mostly great on Linux

Quoting: slaapliedjeAlso a Star Wars game where you can force choke the shit out of Storm Troopers and drop them off ledges. :)
Not sure about force choking but it sounds like you're looking for "Blade & Sorcery" + "The Outer Rim" mod. At this point B&S is basically just a sandbox with a bit of the ol' ultra-violence thrown in but if you like VR and the idea of working out your aggression with the aid of pointy objects, I highly recommend it. Mix in the outer rim for that star wars feel and I think you'll like it. It runs through Proton and mods are simple to install.
I thought of the exact same game, but didn't reply because I couldn't remember its name (I even hunted for it!). The trailers make this look INSANE!

Never heard of that mod though. I might have to pick this up, if I can get over the "VR Movement" vertigo!

Another "1% market share, 6% sales" story, which is nice. And this is a great game. I can't believe it's been a year and a half since I reviewed it, and GOL has done 12 articles on this since August 2018. It deserves every one of them.

And for VR lovers (or not, it supports non-VR too), there's always Elite:Dangerous [External Link], for a fiver.

Happy gaming!

Quoting: g000hBeing an Epic Store exclusive means that "for now" it won't have a native Linux build. Maybe that'll change assuming it eventually appears on Steam.
That's what I would expect.

A linux build is fairly useless on EGS, so I wouldn't bother with that either until Steam release.
But given that Unexplored 1 has a linux build, I don't see a reason to assume 2 won't.
Yep, fair point. I haven't heard them deny that there would be a Linux build. But going exclusive on Epic doesn't suggest that it's front and foremost for them. But hey, Klei took an exclusive on Griftlands, but still followed through with Linux support, so anything is possible.

Fingers crossed. I've watched a couple of streams of FuryForged playing it and it's a significant upgrade graphically and story-wise, but with much of the same deep dungeoneering that you see in the original.

Edit to add - This older LinuxGameNews article [External Link] suggests that there will indeed be a Linux build when the game launches on Steam in 2022!

Quoting: elmapul4)people will just install windows on it anyway to get more games, so why bother.
That does bring up a good point but if Valve only supported some form of Linux on it, more might keep it that way. Either way, it would be a boost to Linux gaming if the main way to use it is with let's say SteamOS 3.0.
I love the idea of this. For years, the Linux crowd has taken Windows or Mac devices, handhelds, consoles and more, and put Linux on them. Can you imagine if Valve knocked out a killer device, running Linux, and people had to hack it in order to put Windows on it? Lovely. Stupid, but delicious.

I really enjoyed this game, but realised that I'd have to invested a LOT of hours to actually become good at it. Amazing atmosphere though, and reasonably simple to pick up. Just feels a bit brutal sometimes when you open a door into a room, realise there's a death robot in there and you literally can't get away from it... assuming you even have a chance to react before being blown into small pieces!

Then again, that brutality was a big contributor to the excellent atmosphere I mentioned!

Also nice to hear decent things about the Linux community, that balances the scales a bit from the reputation earned through the Witcher 2 debacle. Also nice to see a greater than one percent sales figure... even if it's still on the low side. Proves yet again that the Steam survey just doesn't paint an accurate picture of the sales you can expect... even if it's probably "accurate enough" to know that the numbers will be extremely low.
