Quoting: scainePolitical? When someone is a horrible arsehole, they're just a horrible arsehole... it's not political. People's basic human rights aren't political. There's no need to smugly condescend to those who don't want to fund muppets like this guy.

There are plenty more devs out there able to make games without being like this guy. I'll throw my money at them. Somehow they manage to do their jobs without controversy, and for that, I'm thankful.
I would obviously never tell you how to spend your money, or who or who not to support. The dev also isn't doing anything controversial, he's literally just making a game.
The only thing going on here is a handful of folks crying about some alleged "mean" or "concerning" internet comments made years and years ago. These folks that cry and complain could simply ignore the dev/game and move along, but that's not good enough for them, they feel the need to ruin other people.
Huh. So the dev gets to ruin other people (and has done so quite a few times by multiple accounts), but we're not allowed to let that behaviour influence our decision to buy the game? Gotcha.

Sarcasm aside - he is controversial. Multiple threads discuss his arrogance, his racism and "edgy" humour. He certainly is literally making a game, but he's definitely doing so controversially.

Quoting: zimplex1As for the unnecessary article update... I'm perfectly happy to let the politically over-sensitive cry in a corner and miss out.

Yes, political. You know, this extreme willingness to judge the private (or even moderately public) lives of other people and cry for boycotting their creations tells a lot about you, rather than about them, scaine. You realize that one of the main reasons the justice system is needed is for people not to judge causes based on what they find about other people's personalities? Do you realize that in order to enjoy a game (or any product or creation, actually) we don't have to like its creator or agree with any of his positions? This witch hunt you insist on doing on selected people is distressing. I am glad at least this time Liam kept the game article, although with the unnecessary observation.
Where are you getting this?

Private lives? He spoke in public forums.

Political? Again - human rights and basic respect isn't political. It's simply the very minimum I expect from an interaction with another person. This guy can't manage it. There's no politics here. He's just not a nice person.

Justice is needed so that we don't judge people by their actions? What? Er... what?? Are you... are you comparing anti-discrimanatory laws to boycotting an unlikable numpty who spouts racial abuse? I hope not because that would be faintly ridiculous, but I might be jumping to conclusions here.

Witch hunt? No, I'm not particularly going after the guy, I'm just not giving him my money. Why do you find that "distressing"? I wouldn't have commented on this at all if Zimplex1 hadn't tried to imply that there was political motivation for not buying this game.

As for enjoying someone's work despite the author/artist/developer being a bit of an arsehole? Sure, of course you can. Ignorance is bliss, I guess. But would you buy their work/art/game if you knew beforehand they were a bit of an arsehole? Would you support that arsehole directly?

Fine if you do. Just don't condescend and try to turn it all political when you discover some people won't.

What have you been gaming on Linux lately? Come chat

I've been busy in VR, doing a little playtesting of an upcoming rhythm shooter called Groove Gunner. I've also re-started Alyx [External Link] (because it's amazing), and played a bit more Beat Saber [External Link] - I'm up to "hard" now, on the basic in-game tracks, although I can't see me dedicating enough time on it to get to Expert. Finally, I bought Arizona Sunshine [External Link] on sale. It's great, very satisfying, although some of the "boss battles" can be pretty challenging. The voice acting is superb.

And outside of VR, I continue to play Children of Morta [External Link]. I've already raved about this, but once more - go buy this. It's incredible. What a story. I think I'm about 2/3 of the way through now, having played around 17 hours. Great value.

On Proton, I've nearly finished Outer Wilds [External Link]. Also absolutely superb. Deep, deep gameplay and a wonderful mystery story told first-person. Great graphics, just sublime stuff, to be honest.

Finally, I got the bug for more card-play recently, perhaps after Liam covered the upcoming Artifact 2. I loved Fate Hunters, having poured around 40 hours into it, but of course, the dev fell out with their publisher, so they've re-imainged that game as Dreamgate [External Link]. It has a much better roguelite progression, and I think they've nailed the difficult - still challenging, but relying far less on RNG. Dreamgate is excellent.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone!

I like the idea that it's an auto-battler. Otherwise, you can get really bogged down in the details. I wonder how they'll ensure good (and fun) strategy throughout though?

I hate to be "that guy", but I'm not creating a github account just to sponsor Ethan. As much as I'm not a fan of Patreon, the fact that they're not owned by Microsoft is a huge plus for me. I'm sponsoring GOL, Icculus and Godot on Patreon, along with a couple of smaller indie devs, so it's a real shame I can't sponsor Ethan too, considering the huge impact he's had on my gaming (I owe him for Salt & Sanctuary, in particular!)

He did have a Patreon [External Link], a while back. I can't find evidence of it now, but I think he removed it during the 2017 Patreon controversy, where Patreon tried to move service fees to patrons, causing them to remove millions of $1 pledges. Not sure.

Nice that github is absorbing all the payment fees, I suppose, but it's still MS-owned, so not something I want to support. And at the end of the day, an extra 14% or so of zero is still zero. I'd love to show some support though, so it's a shame.

The whole thing brings to mind EGS vs Steam. Sure, EGS will take less of a cut, so it feels like a win, but contributors are already comfortable on Steam and even putting aside comfort/laziness, there's still the moral aspect of "do I want to have anything to do with EGS and their anti-consumer bullshit".

Oof. Just looked at Attact Mode's page - it seems to be pretty focused on Windows. Another one of those projects that provides every executable under the sun for Windows, but expects Linux peeps to do the compile. Naw.

So, it's either Pegaus (via Flatpak since the deb segfaults for me), Ludo (which is a straight, unpackaged, but pre-compiled download) or just bite the bullet and learn me some Retroarch (which is the daddy - PPA, pre-compiled, source, flatpak, you name it, everything except snap from the looks of it).

I love chiptune, but there's something especially grating about this off-key attempt. Sounds like decent sound design too, but that tune... oof. Straight to mute.

Love the look of this though, I'll likely be picking it up when it's baked and ready.

I reckon I'll give this a go, but given that a few commenters don't like how complex the underlying mappings are, I suppose there's also Nostlan and Pegasus. Probably Pegasus though, since it looks like your only option for Nostlan on Linux is to build from source (but of course, they provide a Windows exe...)

Pegasus does look very nice. The DEB version just segfaults for me on Mint, but the flathub version worked. I'll give it a shot on the Pi which arrived yesterday, see if I can configure everything on it first.

Edit - Hmmm, in fact, I think I'll start with Attract-Mode, since this will be largely Mame-only, this is exactly what I'm looking for. Fingers crossed.

The timing of this is incredible. After my garage flooded a few weeks ago, I finally ordered a skip last week and cleared it out. I now have enough space in there to worry about my ancient MAME cabinet - it survived the flood, but I haven't spent any time on it for the past 15 years when the old CRT finally gave up the ghost. So on Saturday I ordered a new 19" 4:3 monitor on Ebuyer at the weekend, and a new Pi 4b to hook it all up and get it going again.

The parts are due to arrive today... and then you posted this article. Spooky.
