Some thoughts on Trackless, a different sort of first-person adventure game
13 Nov 2017 at 1:35 pm UTC

I struggled to maintain interest in this, which is a bit weird given the ecstatic reviews the game seem to get. I've only played about 30 minutes though, so I'm sure I'll head back in to finish it off eventually.

The weird 2D people really threw me though. I think they were aiming for "art", but I found them to be oddly at odds with the rest of the game and they really broke the immersion for me.

Quoting: sevengonna buy myself this one :)
I woke up this morning to do so myself, but then noticed Hand of Fate 2, and since I already own (and until this morning had never played) Everspace, I went with that.

Everspace is a little disappointing - possibly I'm just frustrated with the difficulty. I never really know what's going on. Hand of Fate 2, though, is superb. Really excellent. I'll be playing it a lot.

Then I'll buy this.

I'll be buying this one, for sure. Looks great and I could use another First-person fix after finishing Observer a couple of night ago!

Quoting: jensYou value a DRM-free buy the most. I value a buy that counts for Linux the most.
I think both count for Linux, but while I think you're right that Shmerl will "contribute" less to the Linux cause by avoiding Steam, my gut tells me that Shmerl's sensibilities are quite rare. I don't mean that there aren't hundreds or even thousands of people like him, but that in the grand scheme of things, Shmerl's DRM-only stance is the 1% of the 1%.

I might be wrong of course. Just my experience of years of GOL and Reddit - most people on these sites tend to want games, not ideals. In fact, there's the tendency to go the other way - many buying Windows games to play on wine or dual-boot, or buying from potentially non-Linux bundle sites like BundleStars Fanatical. Those guys just want their games, have no interest in "furthering the Linux cause".

So far, this is an incredible game. I haven't had any mouse issues, but on two occasions, I haven't been able to move at all - a quit to menu and reload fixed that. I think it's when I pause the game for long periods?

My only gripe is that the FOV is pretty low. I think it's meant to create a more claustrophobic experience (and if so, well done, that worked), but I felt a bit constrained by how zoomed in everything was.

And yeah, I'm on 8 hours, still have a way to go, I think, maybe a couple of hours. More if I can bring myself to head back down to the basement again

... might just leave that one to my imagination though!!

Great game. Loving it.

Quoting: no_information_hereI love this game! Can't wait to see what the third update will bring.

Quoting: scaineYeah, I gave up on this title to be honest.
That is too bad. <snip>
Aw, nah. I've given the wrong impression I think - I've mostly enjoyed my near-30 hours in the game. I don't regret buying it, at all.

But compared to S&S (where I have nearly 70 hours with two play-throughs), I suppose the difference is that starting off Hollow Knight from scratch again would be punishing and tedious, but starting a new character in S&S is exciting. HN is more of a metroidvania, while S&S has that character building element that really differentiates it. For me, anyway!

Quoting: scaineI wonder if Ubuntu 17.04 is a typo? Unusual to state a non-LTS release as a minimum spec, isn't it? Genuinely don't know, but I only run LTS releases on my gaming machine, so I guess I'll find out when I get this.
Why would you only use LTS releases for gaming machines? Gaming machines should be more bleeding edge than servers, which is really what LTS is for.
Simply because life is too short to dick about rescuing a black-screened system due to a borked upgrade. Or the fact AutoFS configs have totally changed (14.04 to 16.04). Or re-installing Nemo, because PPAs are disabled during upgrades. Or discovering that Gnome-shell doesn't have a Compiz-style zoom function. Or that my PPAs (such as OBS) doesn't have an Aardvark build yet.

And so on. Non-LTS releases give me none of the benefits of upgrading an O/S and all of the risk. PPAs keep everything that matters up to date anyway, and in the short-term, ironically, even more up to date than the new release, until PPA builds catch, which is normally within a couple of weeks of course.

But on the whole, it's just not worth the hassle. Especially the way Ubuntu releases HW-stacks occasionally, to keep even the Kernel up to date with non-LTS releases.

Honestly, these days, I just don't see the point in non-LTS releases except as a preview of what's coming to the next LTS. I run 17.10 on this laptop, but for gaming? No way.

Yeah, I gave up on this title to be honest. Two things kill it, despite the awesome gameplay. First, I hate not having a map for an area, especially in a spacially confusing game like this where a lot of the corridor areas are very similar. Two, the insane rareness of the benches (savepoints).

There were also long periods where I was like "what now?". So, armed with a new ability, you have to tediously check every old area, wondering if you can now get across, up, or through whatever inaccessible places you've previously encountered. Which would be cool if the world weren't so vast, the stagroads so few and the benches just as rare.

It became a chore. Such a cracking mechanic too.

Salt and Sanctuary, on the other hand... well, some of the same criticism applies, I suppose, but at least they put a temple practically right next to each boss fight. I still have nightmares about defeating the Mantis Lords in Hollow Knight - it was like a five minute journey to the arena each time I died and that fight was insanely tough.

Quoting: gojulA bit scared about Vulkan, as Debian only features driver 375.82. Anyway bought the game from Feral Store as their other ports were awesome.
I would strongly recommend installing newer drivers (384.90), using NVIDIA's own installer if necessary. We have known issues on older drivers.
You've got to be joking, right? Installing drivers... from a website? Not having to deal with that, ever, is one of Linux's greatest joys.

More seriously, the last time I tried to install Nvidia's driver from their website, I gave up. It's a weird process involving downloading a tarball, extracting, setting executable, running, specifying a bunch of parameters, and the end result is... a DEB file! Which you have to install?! Which breaks your graphics driver PPA probably. And then you get a black screen and now what? Low graphics mode, purge nvidia-*, reboot, install stock driver. Or try again. So seriously, no thanks.
