Contagion, Cooperative Survival Horror FPS Is Still Planned For Linux
8 Mar 2015 at 5:31 pm UTC Likes: 3

Contagion is turning into another 7 Days to Die. It was promised within weeks of the Windows release - something about needing to buy a new license? Or needing the Portal 2 code? Ach, I can't remember. All I know is that it's been months, nearly (and feels like) years. I can't believe anything the devs say now.

actually, no. evolve had same day linux support i believe. (notice, i could be wrong)
I think you've replied to the wrong guy. I think it's Darksiders, however @tuxisagamer thinks it's Evolve. I'm subscribed to the Steam thread asking for Linux support for Evolve, so I don't think there's a day-one Linux client for that game...

[Edit: Unless you thought I was referring to Evolve when I said "those two". I meant Darksiders 1 & 2]

Interesting lyrics - they made me think of Darksiders, but surely there's another dev already porting that? Then I looked at the Wikipedia page for Master of Puppets, the album on which this features :

"...was inspired by H. P. Lovecraft's short story "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", whose main protagonist battles unearthly forces. It is considered the heaviest track on the album whose main riff emulates a beast dragging itself into the sea"

Battling unearthly forces, eh? I'm still thinking that this is Darksiders related! Which would be superb, cos we've waited a long time for those two to appear.

Dying Light Major Patch Released, Still Abysmal On Linux
14 Feb 2015 at 11:56 pm UTC

The 1.4 patch has killed performance for me. I was playing this game with only occasionally noticeable drops in performance during intense scenes. There was no running blur after the 1.3 patch.

However, it's now unplayable. Maybe 5 to 10fps if I'm being generous. Actually, the frames per second occasionally seems quite high, but the game itself now plays in slow motion regardless. I run at a crawl. Zombies swing and it can take 2 or 3 seconds to complete. It's a mess.

However, when I asked the game to validate its files, it claimed that 234 files were corrupt and insisted on downloading the whole 10.1'sh Gig all over again. I'll play again tomorrow to see if it's made any difference.

Edit /usr/bin/steamos-session (the steamcompmgr line) to look like this:
steamcompmgr -v &

and you'll get a FPS counter like this one
That's great - the option to see FPS only exists in the standard client, so I haven't been able to test framerate difference until now. I'll hopefully get a chance to do this tonight.

As for how easy it is to set up a SteamOS session inside Ubuntu, just follow this guide :

(That's the third time I've posted this link! It's really, really worthwhile - I'm enjoying how tear-free all my games have become since doing it)

For those of you complaining about the framerate, have you tried a SteamOS session yet? I've mentioned it a few times in these threads, but no-one has corroborated the big jump in framerate I see when I install the SteamOS session in Ubuntu.

I think you've gotten the wrong impression of this game, perhaps from the (as usual) extremely vocal folk that have a hard time. And I'm not blaming Liam! Just because I can play the game (and Witcher 2, and Metro...) on my trusty GTX670 doesn't mean everyone has the same experience. Actually, seriously Liam, you're really, really unlucky with this stuff!

But as Feist notes above, (assuming you have a rig that runs this nicely) this game is superb fun, well worth the money. The only bug outstanding for me now is the safe-zones. If they fixed that, I suspect that my experience on this game would be better than many Windows owners, since it's enjoyably smooth in a SteamOS session and luckily I find the "running blur" only a mild annoyance.

Okay, okay, I'm being kind. The running blur is a travesty of epic proportions. But it doesn't make me sick, unlike many, going by the Steam forums. So there's that.

Anyway, no it's not perfect. Yes, it should have waited until these bugs were ironed out before releasing. True, some of the bugs are unique to Linux.

But I'm still glad I bought it. It's fun. And scary. And satisfying. And epic. In fact, satisfyingly epic, in a scary yet fun way.

It might be an idea to re-state the Unique Question in these reviews, since I'd forgotten what the question was. From the responses, I think it was along the lines of "do you think SteamOS will be a success?". Or Steam Machines specifically? Can't remember.

Dying Light Is Almost Playable On Linux, If You Do Some Tinkering (Updated)
29 Jan 2015 at 6:27 pm UTC Likes: 2

Quick note - I originally struggled with this on Ubuntu 14.04 and even switching desktop to Gnome-Classic or openbox didn't make much of a difference.

However, when I ran it from a SteamOS session, the difference was pretty pleasing. I followed this guide [External Link] and logged into my SteamOS from the Ubuntu login prompt.

My specs aren't too fantastic, but the framerate is generally playable, even outside. I'm about 3 hours into the game so far. Specs are 2010 i7 (dunno the model, sorry, but it's nearly five years old now), GTX670 and 8Gb RAM. No particular tweaks other than running in a SteamOS session. I think I did turn off AA and... was it called occlusion? Something like that. Running at 1920x1024.

I'll see if I can add the FPS counter from the steam client and do a comparison of SteamOS vs Ubuntu vs Openbox. Hopefully it's not all in my head.

Darksiders Linux Port Looks Like It Is Still Happening

Quoting: HadBabitsI don't think I enjoyed it much on console, but if the port's good I'd love to give it another shot. But while we're talking about games that are still coming... [External Link] ;)
Wow, lots of Linux activity on Outlast. I'm terrified by these games, but fall for them every time. If that comes out, I'm gonna have to play it. (during the day, with the sound low, one eye closed...)
