Valve Has Flipped That Switch & Greenlit More Linux Games This July
13 Jul 2014 at 8:23 pm UTC

Quoting: MayeulCI did not check all of these, but warlocks seems promising, even if I wouldn't mind better graphics, I am getting tired of all these "retro-style" games.
Reminds me some classics (like this BIG title on Gamecube, I can't remember its name).
Skies of Arcadia?

GOL Asks: What Have You Been Playing Recently?

Quoting: DeformalPlanetside 2. I hope to see it on Ubuntu and Steam OS one day.
That would be nice. I was fairly high level Vanu when I gave it up back in July last year. It's a fantastic team game, but needed just a bit more teamwork mechanic - you only really saw engineer/max combos working typically. The other classes don't really "fit together" if you know what I mean.

As for what I've been playing - Guacamelee took me totally by surprise - it's absolutely superb. It's up there with Dust: An Elysium Tale actually in terms of fighting mechanic. Better, even, as it's more predictable and therefore skills-based.

Just finished XCOM:Enemy Unknown and I'll give it a short break before starting Enemy Within. Other than that, I've played a little bit of Dustforce which is decent, and a lot of Killing Floor - the new mission-based map is great fun and I love the new wave map too.

Developer Teases With Darksiders On Linux Screenshot

I finished the first one on PS3 a few years ago, and had given up Windows gaming by the time the second had appeared. The first game a masterpiece though. I'd happily buy it if it Linux on Steam.

Fantastic news.

Among The Sleep Still Unplayable For A Lot Of Linux Users
10 Jul 2014 at 5:11 pm UTC

The difficulty in defending this dev is that their community has already found a fix for the headless baby bug, but they haven't yet posted that fix to their live Steam build in over a month. As for the graphical glitches, again, this is miscommunicated - the devs claim that it's only the first level that's affected, but on public forums they have buyers claiming it's all the way through the game... which remain unreplied.

It feels like Fun Pimps all over again. Great game, capable guys obviously, but a complete blackout in terms of communication. It's incredibly frustrating.

I backed this. I feel let down.

Crytek In Trouble, Could Be Bad News For Homefront On Linux

Quoting: abelthorneWell, Crytek (the main company) has had difficulties these last years with games selling far less than expected (Crysis 2, Ryse...) and buying a lot of other dev studios. So it's not really a big surprise.
There are rumours about Deep Silver buying Crytek UK (and probably completing the development of Homefront 2).
Naturally, Crysis 2 and Ryse were bad games.
I beg to differ. I thought Crysis 2 was an excellent game and one of the best FPS of the year it came out, but it was no surprised that it sold less than Crysis 1.

And I find it strange that you "know" a game is going to suck when you haven't even played it yet.
Yep, I'm glad someone else is sticking up for Crysis 2. It improved on Crysis 1 in every possible way - better engine, graphics, better (if still silly) plot, fantastic set pieces, stealth that worked. It was superb.

It wasn't quite as long. Or perhaps it was a similar length, but I was more familiar with the tactics - I finished Crysis 2 in 10.5 hours, while the original took me 12. Similar to Metro:LL.

I wonder how this affects Star Citizen? Will they still be able to offer Linux support if Crytek fold?

Quoting: computerhTimespinner looks interesting but the $10/$15 tiers are identical. Why would I pony up more cash for the same reward as the lower tier?
The $10 tier was an "early bird". All sold out now, sadly, so it's a $15 minimum if you want to pledge to this one.

I've gone a bit crazy this issue - one of the hazards of researching/writing this article - and I've pledged to Timespinners, Twin Souls and Catlateral Damage. <sigh>

Eminence: Xander's Tales An MMO/RPG Trading Card Game Coming Soon
2 Jul 2014 at 11:28 am UTC

You can try CardHunter too, which is browser-based, but better than any other card-based game I've ever played. It's free to play, but there is a slight pay-to-win element, which is unfortunate, but doesn't affect the single-player game, so it's still worth checking out.

Sadly, it requires a version of flash greater than the one currently supported on Linux, so you have to use Chrome, or use one of the tutorials out there to extract pepper-flash from Chrome and apply it to Chromium.

Quoting: GuestThanks for the round-up. 3 suggestions:

Thanks for the suggestions, but only "We Are Dwarves" is likely to make the cut there - the first one, Sheltered, finishes in a few days, while Sunset is right on the edge, at 15. Might be able to cover it. I'll stick the last one in the WIKI when I get a moment, if you haven't already done so.

I'll also take this opportunity to point out further controversy regarding Areal. The Verge ran this article [External Link] yesterday regarding Vostok vs West. Apparently GSC is in on it now and none of these studios are backing down. Interesting times ahead for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. fans, but probably not in a good way, sadly.

Quoting: DrMcCoyNot really Linux- (or electronical gaming in general) related, but this movie project also still needs money: Spinward Traveller [External Link], based on the setting of the science-fiction pen & paper roleplaying game [External Link].

And moving further along that tangent, there's a great Heavy Metal concept album based on the RPG too: The Lord Weird Slough Feg - Traveller [External Link].

Yeah, I know, off-topic, but I just can't resist; I'm a roleplayer and metalhead at heart as well. :)
That's a pretty sweet sounding band. The guitars remind me of Megadeth, but the style of music has hints of Maiden, or perhaps Rhapsody in some of their ballady riffs. Loving the old school vibe. The production is a bit Man-o-war, but I'm enjoying it so far. Raw.

Never figured you for a metalhead, McCoy.

[Edit: just hit track 5 - this is... excellent! Real earthy, old school metal. Superb!]

[Edit 2: The Lord Weird Slough Feg have three albums available on Rdio - magic news. That's my next month's listening sorted! Big up, McCoy. Brilliant find, mate!]

Quoting: KelsAny love for Midora [External Link], which is struggling a bit so far? It's got Linux listed right up front.
Very zelda-like, or zenonia-like if you want to be a bit more modern. Sadly, with only 12 days to run, this will have completed by our next issue, projected for Monday July 14th...
