NTSYNC driver for improving Windows games on Linux with Wine / Proton should finally land in Linux kernel 6.14
13 Jan 2025 at 9:14 pm UTC

The primary problem with kernel involvement remains: crashes.
I mean, sure... but when was the last time you had a game crash? I play a LOT of games, and an actual game crash, or worse, freeze? It's like once a year if that.

Mecha Comet looks like a fun little modular Linux handheld

I was just walking around the house with the electrician to every room with my heavy ass laptop with a usbc->eth adapter dangling off of it
You and me both, that was exactly my painful experience too. However, I do think the eth, while awesome, is overkill here. A little usb->eth dongle would suit me.

Edit to add, I went back to look at the Pilet again and while both are appealing (particularly the larger Pilet model), I have to say this Mecha is waaaay more stylish. And I love the modular keyboard and gamepad options. Just a shame these are Kickstarter projects. Got a wait on hands, I guess.

Lenovo Legion Go S with Valve's SteamOS is official, expected to launch in May
7 Jan 2025 at 7:32 pm UTC

I can't believe a reasonably respected brand like Lenovo is using marketing BS like "AI-powered software" in their literature. Pure cringe.

Interested in these though, shipping with SteamOS as they do. I'm not sure about those touchpads though. The one on the Killswitch is so small it looks like a goddam fingerprint sensor! Decent sized touchpad on the "Go 2" model though. I was torn on the lack of a left-touchpad until I realised that the only time I ever used the left-touchpad was for the keyboard.

Acer announced the new Nitro Blaze 8 and massive Switch-like Nitro Blaze 11 gaming handhelds

I haven't paid the "Microsoft Tax" in well over a decade, so if any of these devices are sporting Windows as the base O/S, they're dead to me. Doesn't matter if their underlying compatibility makes them interesting Linux devices... MS ain't getting a penny off me if I can help it.

And yeah, those style-lines are pretty childish too.

Wireless HORIPAD for Steam gets a firmware fix for the Steam Deck OLED

Anyone else getting a virus warning from google drive when trying to download this?
Just tried it based on your comment, and yep, Google throws up a virus warning. The link is useless as a result, sadly.

Looks like you need Windows to run their firmware updater
Huh. I'm out then.

The most popular Linux gaming articles of 2024

That's about 8 articles every day, assuming you took the weekends off (which you didn't always) and didn't take any holidays (which you barely did!). Amazing work ethic. Thanks so much for all your contributions, Liam. Here's to a more relaxed 2025. Let's say... 7 articles a day, eh?

Prime Gaming - December 20th edition round-up for Steam Deck / Linux
20 Dec 2024 at 2:41 pm UTC Likes: 1

Man, it's a lot of clicking to claim this many games!!

Looking through the 100 or so games I've claimed on Prime in the past two or three months, I'd say the standouts have been:

  • Dishonored

  • Bioshock

  • Monster Train

  • Shogun Showdown

  • Planet of Lana

  • The Outer Worlds

  • Dredge

  • Star Wars: Bounty Hunter

  • Plague Tale: Innocence

With a shout out to early freebies like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Prey, Wolfenstein: New Order, Control, Ghostrunner and the Neverwinter Night games.

I'm not a fan of Amazon, but the Prime bundle is decent value. If only they, you know, paid tax and treated their employees like humans.

I suppose there are even more games worth a shout, but those were on Epic, and I ain't touching that shit.

New Steam Controller 2 and VR controller designs got leaked

Quoting: bialyikarPersonally, I don't need the right analog stick, so it could be gone. The greatest strength of this controller is replacing this stick with its touch counterpart.
Well, couldn't agree less with this. I never ended up using my SC1 becuase it lacked a right thumbstick. The haptic pad replacement is a poor and frustrating substitute in most twinstick shooters. Love that the Steam deck has a full set.

Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl gets a massive patch with an AI overhaul and lots of A-Life fixes

Quoting: Jarmer110 gb patch. That's just absurd, are you basically just redownloading the entire game?
My thoughts, exactly.
Even there, I think the idea of a 110 gb game is ridiculous. Maybe I just don't play AAA games.
110Gb is pretty big. I play a bit of AAA and looking at my top installed games, it would place third.

I seem to remember that the Mass Effect trilogy/remaster was gigantic too, before I un-installed it.
