Indie FPS ‘Vengeance’ has a huge update, starting to actually get fun now

I still think those level systems are nothing but gimmicks to hook the single-player audience on multiplayer games. People who just want to "beat" the online game and then throw it away. When it comes to online FPS games I personally think that's an audience which should never have been catered to in the first place, and doing so has only brought down the quality of both the games and the longevity of their communities.
By contrast consider the audience which is attracted to a game without level systems. Those would be gamers who want to face their opponent as equals and beat them or be beaten by them, and people who realize that skill is the real level system and is a far more complex thing than just experience points and a level number. And while some of the unlocks and level systems might not be so bad, you still have to consider that these are two very different types of gamers, and you also have to wonder if the developers are the type who don't understand that levels shouldn't determine skill level but maybe they designed their game to force it to be that way.

Quoting: GloriousEggrollYou don't start a game at max level with all abilities. You do in games that don't have level systems.

I don't understand. The game advertises itself as "We want to go back to a more civilized time where you bought a game and you had all of its contents."
But yet it features a level system and "unlocks"?
I guess that's not technically a contradiction as long as buying unlocks is not allowed, but still their definition of the more "civilized time" in online gaming history where you had all the games content must be very different from mine.

The developers of Solus are hoping to improve Linux gaming with snaps and their Linux Steam Integration

I personally think declarative package management (as in NixOS and GuixSD) is a far, far, better solution to the same problem things like snaps and flatpak address. I hope the GNU/Linux ecosystem moves more toward that direction in the future
Unreal Tournament updated again, Epic have made it slightly easier to download on Linux

I wonder if that might have something to do with it, maybe only certain accounts are allowed?
I'd send a message to one of the developers or forum mods and see what they say.

Quoting: GuestHi,That's really weird. It just works for me like any other link, I don't have to do anything special at all. Although I am logged in when I download it and I know my account probably has some special unlocks because a while back they had some content that required the launcher application to gain access to but Linux users don't have it, so we had to message the devs to get it unlocked.
I've tried now for months on end to download this via the forum link via different browsers and addons like downemall for Firefox without success. Is there perhaps a legit torrent or ftp site that I can download this from and give it a try? I guess the more users there are participating using Linux the better :S:
Would be alot easier if they put up a Linux installer too, and whilst they're about it give their other good looking games like Fortnite and Paragon some Linux love.

According to netmarketshare Linux hit 6.91% market share last month, higher than Mac

The slope of the graphs is even more interesting I think. Over a 2 month period GNU/Linux has a much larger growth than any other and windows has had negative growth for about half a year now (it's loss almost correlates with Linux's growth)
GNU/Linux: 1.150%
MacOS: 0.135%
Windows: -1.285%
It's not just the slopes either, they've also been accelerating in these directions. Linux has been accelerating upward (windows is accelerating downward) so I don't think the growth is going to die down, at least not for a few more months and who knows maybe it'll take off even more.

Been waiting to try it again since it had a few bugs in the past. This seems like a good time to try jumping back in.
One of Valve's choices of games to highlight for Steam Machines is more than a little silly

On the bright side, maybe they know something and Epic will finally be adding real Vulkan support to their engine soon.
The HTC Vive just had a price cut, VR just became a little more accessible

VR itself might be just a gimmick that would pass with time under its own merits.
However I still think VR is here to stay because of how its driving controller innovation.
The 3D aspect isn't the reason, it has more to do with the fact that it's a screen strapped to your face rather than sitting on a desk. That simple change is already causing some interesting new controller designs with positional sensors which could really revolutionize some genres like FPS games.
For example, games wouldn't even have to program in "cover" mechanics, because you'd get them for free with these controllers. Just duck behind something and raise your arm up to shoot from behind cover for example. Or toss grenades with complete control over angle and strength
I haven't tried VR yet but from what I can tell it looks mostly like the movement systems are what's holding it back. I think some games don't even let you move around freely at all. If so then they really need to work on that.

Out of Reach, a survival game with a pirate theme has Linux support

I don't get what's supposed to make this "piraty" at all.
It just looks like a coastal survival game with some small 1-man boats. I guess the "cut-throat" part might be the reason, but still.
I was expecting to see open waters, big sails, cannons, crews, treasure, etc..

Unreal Engine 4.17 released with expanded Vulkan support

I think you completely missed my point.
In fact what I was saying was the complete opposite of being a zealot. Right now the situation with UE4 is we have two different API's. They basically develop DirectX for Windows and OpenGL for Linux.
So asking them to improve the OpenGL build is in fact asking them to develop especially for Linux (e.g. this is more of a zealot position because you want them to drop everything and appease just the Linux users)
But with Vulkan, on the other hand, they don't have to develop as much especially for Linux. I'm not asking them to pay special attention to us, or fighting for what I think Linux needs. The point I was making was a mere observation of how things are already starting to go and why it's good for us.
Vulkan is already starting to win, even just in the Windows space. So Epic could completely forget about Linux altogether, just develop Vulkan for the Windows users who need it and we would reap the benefits too.
Eventually the Vulkan version should surpass the OpenGL one. Not because of the supposed performance improvements of Vulkan but because Epic is much more likely to develop Vulkan for the benefit of everyone, rather than just developing OpenGL for only the benefit of Linux users in particular.
Read any articles on Vulkan and you'll see that it has much closer parity in quality and performance across all operating systems for free. Any games that run Vulkan and have a Linux client will automatically give us very near (if not identical to) the support and performance that windows users are getting, without developers having to give Linux any special attention.
