Interview With Aspyr Media About Civilization V & Linux Gaming
24 Jul 2014 at 12:03 pm UTC

"Right now Steam stats show Mac at around 3.6% of the user base, and Linux at 1.2%. That’s pretty close to the sales reality although for this release, its lower on Linux due to the title being out for some time and the large amounts of users that already own it on the other 2 platforms.
"
That!

I bought Civ5 three years ago, when I would not have imagined in a million years that Linux would see a game like this ported to Linux, then I bought Civ5 again on the Humble Bundle with lots of extensions this year. I was not aware at the time that purchases count as Linux Sales only if played on Linux immediately after purchase :(

But when the game came out officially on Linux, I bought ALL the DLCs that I still did not own, just to show that yes, there is a demand for such good ports.

It will be interesting to see the sales for new titles like Civ - Beyond Earth. Still keen to buy Pandora as well.

GOG com Now Officially Support Linux Games

Good of them to support Ubuntu. They could have put debian, and thus covered more distros but hey...I'm not complaining as I am a Ubuntu user for the moment.

I own most of the games they have put on the list, but I will vote with my wallet as per usual.

I am ok with the wrappers, after all, aren't most of the Good OLD Games wrapped with DOSBOX?

Vote For GOG To Make Galaxy Open Source

Aomwthing that Deusra has done is have both a closed-source client and also an open source client called Desurium.

I think that was quite a good idea.

Quoting: PlintslchoOh, this looks beautiful! I'll definitely keep an eye on it. Looks a little bit like FTL but with more variety and depth.

The music is nice too. Maybe they'll offer a bundle including the game and the soundtrack. That would be great.
No, FTL definitely has more depth in strategy, Out There is more like a survival Gamebook. They are two very different games. Try both, you will like them.

Hey, thanks for the guide! It will definitely help me. But I’m not sure what you mean with the quote above… I can not know what I will get before drilling, can I?

BTW I bought the game on the Humble Store.
Sorry, my explanations were very vague. Basically, what I mean is always mine first at 7, if you mine at a lesser depth you will mineless resources, if you mine deeper than 7, you run a high risk of breaking your equipment. (Which can be easily repaired in all fairness). If with this first drilling you have found more than 15 resources, then repeat the operation. Never mine three times.

I wish you luck. My first 4-5 goes at Out There were frustrating as I did not get past the 4-5 first planets/systems. Once you have the knack for surviving, you will be able to enjoy the story as it unfolds.

EDIT - May I also point out that Out There is getting a free expansion pack called the Omega Edition.

I think porting mobile games to PC as a bit useless, as usually these games are fairly limited, but still, why not offer the option to the buyers. Out There is a great game on the phone...one of my best experiences this year.

Quoting: GuestI bought it for my smartphone and it’s nice, but a bit too hard for me…

I think it needs either a difficulty setting or better explanations or less randomness… not sure.
OK first off, when you hop from planet to planet, manage your resources well.
You do NOT need to mine every planet, what you want to do is move forward. To do that, you should try to get as much fuel as possible
Mine in the following order:
Gas planets (Nearly on every system that you hop into) - you will never have too much gas
Metals - only if you have below 20 iron. Other materials you can leave on the planets...
Planets with Life - If you have enough fuel, try to visit them as you will unlock techs. Oxygen is fairly easy to come by.

NEVER mine Suns unless you are desperate, or you have a super hull

Mine at a depth of 7, bear in mind that if you get over 4 in fuel resources it is worth having drilled. Below that, you are mining at a loss!

Mount & Blade: Warband Out Of Beta For Linux, Free All Weekend & Thoughts

Well, for me it was an instant re-download.

I had played the game extensively on Windows, and honestly there is nothing quite like it.

To help support Linux and show that yes, I support their decision to port to Linux, I have also bought the DLC. We niow know that if we owned the game or played the game on Windows it will not count as a Linux sale in the grand scheme of things.

I played through the beta for 1-2 hours, and everything seemed all right, so I guess that this final release will be good.

Now you will start as a lowly peasant fighter, with limited gear, but after 5-6 hours of gaming, you could be at the head of a formidable metal plated armoured platoon of knights, and experience the exhilarating thrill of a charge across a lush valley or parched desert.

There is so much in this game: RTS, FPS a la Chivalry, Economy SIM etc...

Mountain Is A Game That Isn't Quite A Game

Quoting: Segata SanshiroDoes anyone know a hack to make this into a screensaver? Would be kind of like having digital sea monkeys.
That! Having this as a screensaver would be great, but it may be a little taxing on the resources of the computer. CPU use is c.10-20% at least for this.

So far, I have this running at work where I have two monitors on the monitor that I do not use. It is a nice thing to have on the side, not too distracting, but still animate.

I think of it as a "mineral & organic" tamagochi.

Calling it a game is farfetched I admit, but it is a nice experiment.

Valve Are Heating Up Linux As They Greenlight More Linux Games

Northern Shadow is truly intriguing...

But my new motto is to wait for games to be completed before buying them, as I have been stung to many times before, either because the Linux port never happens, or because development stops, or because the game did not go in the direction I was expecting.

The only exception: Dwarf Fortress, gotta be realistic, if I had waited for the final release, I would have had to wait 30 years!
