Looks like Discord finally fixed Linux screen and audio sharing with Wayland

Quoting: PyrateStill can't believe there's no proper privacy friendly alternative to Discord. Matrix/Element is the closest I found but even that one is not there yet.
Every time I tried Matrix, I found it to be pretty horribly designed. Their mod tools were rubbish, and their multi-room system was ridiculously bad that just strung multiple standalone rooms under a special heading and that was seemingly all it really did. Discord at least generally works well at its job.
I've converted my closes 13 or so friends to using Element/Matrix BUT only as a generic 1-to-1 and 1-to-many messaging replacement.

Discord is less about simple messaging and more about a community (or plural). Slack is similar, but instead of a casual vibe, they're going for that professional market. I guess Rocket.Chat is somewhat of a FLO (free/libre/open) replacement for the latter.

It feels as if some (devs) want Element/Matrix to be a Discord replacement and some want it to be a generic messaging app (replacement for Telegram, Signal, FB Messenger, WhatsApp, Line, etc).

Echoing the support in these comments for this studio (Larian), I am considering buying on GOG as well, just to give them more of my money.

War Thunder adds stealth tech, ray tracing and graphics upgrades in the Firebirds update

Quoting: PikoloDo NOT try to run WarThunder with Proton. It will most likely work for playing replays, but you will get banned by Easy AntiCheat if you try playing PvP
Since when? It would either work or not with Proton, and last I checked it does. You don’t just get banned for using Proton, if anti-cheat isn’t enabled you would just get kicked.
Judging by the Proton-specific reports [External Link], it seems there are issues since about a month ago but not earlier. 😮

I was tempted before to switch to Proton version of War Thunder to try out the Windows-only VR (ground matches are immersive [External Link] but uncompetitive [External Link]; hope it gets better when Valve does more VR stuff). Now I'm even more tempted. So when their Ray Tracing supports AMD (but not Vulkan & Linux yet) I will probably switch.

Stellar Blade should come to PC in 2025, dev expects sales to exceed console

Quoting: chickenb00I am eagerly awaiting the mod community's efforts towards this game. I'm not sure I'll buy it or play it, but I do want to see what they come up with.
I'm willing to bet one of them is a nude mod because it's bound to happen with this game.
I mean the titillation is real. The trailer had a lot of overexaggerated breast physics, and shots focusing on thighs and other curvy bits. And don't get me started on the costumes...

I do get the argument for needing fan service to get sales to be able to give people good writing or world-building or interesting ideas... but that doesn't mean I will enjoy it. And deep down I believe that consensual titillation breeds nonconsensual titillation (also known as harassment) 😢.

Old School Rally gets split-screen support, new stages and a new car
15 Nov 2024 at 11:12 pm UTC

I, too, have fond memories of Colin McRae Rally (2?), on Windows XP I think.

The split screen looks to be for 2 players based on the post. Waiting for 4 player support since I have more than 1 sibling and more than 1 apartment mate and my friends often visit in groups larger than 1.

Although I wish more games had 4+ player support. Especially shared screen (as opposed to split screen) multiplayer games don't have a good excuse for the limit. IF I WANT TO BREAK THE GAME BALANCE YOU SHOULD LET ME BWAAAAAAAA!!

Minecraft-like free and open source game VoxeLibre (formerly MineClone2) hits over 500K downloads

I'm waiting for the perfect storm 😈:
- VoxeLibre or some games on it look polished to a degree comparable to Minecraft (mostly in terms of a pleasant and consistent visual and audio design)
- A group of friends is interested in starting a Minecraft world together
- Someone is reluctant to shell out 30 euros
- I have had a chance to tell some of them the good word of free/libre/open

Quoting: GOL_USERSuch a shame this is limited to nvidia only. Wish tech would be more open and improve things for everyone instead of keeping these silly technologies to themselves as a way to lock down their own brand.

HL is my favorite, be nice to have a better updated version that all can play instead of a limited upgraded version only green team can play.
Capitalism would have to be changed radically or replaced for that to be possible. 😄

House Hopper is a funny and challenging golf-like 3D platformer
14 Nov 2024 at 1:22 pm UTC

I really want to try this for couch gaming... without the direct multiplayer element. I.e. sometimes these hangouts are fun even for the ones not playing. So what if only one of us is playing (this game) and the others are back-seat gaming?

Quoting: Talon1024There's also this, from the article about console support [External Link] on the Godot Engine blog:

While platforms like Steam are very easy to publish for, the reality is that most of the revenue from independent developers generally comes from consoles (this, of course, speaking of devs not focusing on mobile).
I think the reason why most of the revenue from independent developers come from consoles is because the hardware is locked down, which makes it easier for them to develop games without having to think about different configurations like on PC.
I think it is due to a slight cultural difference. Console gamers are used to paying more (for a slightly more seamless gaming experience) whilst PC gamers pay less and tinker a bit more. PC gaming is vastly more common in areas like Eastern Europe and South America, while console gaming is more common in NA, Western Europe, and Japan - areas where Apple products are also more widely used - since, I would speculate, customers are willing to pay more for minor conveniences.

As to why console exclusives are coming to PC, I would speculate that publishers' eyes have opened to the significant extra money they could make.
