Life is Strange released for Linux & SteamOS, some thoughts and a port report included

Single digit FPS, frequent freezes/hitches of about a second, and that on everything set to low. These already show up during the text and logo billboards before the main menu, so I'm guessing the issue is CPU, not GPU.
Since I continue to lack the monies for an hardware upgrade, I guess I have to put this game back on my "TODO" pile. A shame.
Well, it's not like I have a lack of things to do, so that's maybe just as well. :P

Quoting: ColoneilI'm guessing this port is not dual core friendly as everything else is way above minimum specs...Performance on my system [External Link] is also so low as to be unplayable, even with my high tolerances for low performance, unfortunately.

Quoting: STiATWhen will they release?According to that video, they have a release date, but Paradox wants to keep it secret for now. The only thing the general public knows is that it's going to be 2016. Paradox will apparently do some publicity stuff once the actual date gets nearer or something.

Yes. The Steam page [External Link] has Linux system requirements and an earlier press release mentioned Linux, but I can't find it at the moment. They're also reusing the same general codebase from Pillars of Eternity, so Linux support isn't a problem at all.

Because while mouse and keyboard input keep them from triggering, gamepad input usually does not. So if the game doesn't disable them, you either have to disable them yourself manually or have your screen go to sleep every 10 minutes.

Quoting: GuestThe other day I was trying to report a bug about Unity games preventing monitors to enter sleep modeHuh, I thought that's actually a feature to disable screensaver and monitor sleep mode while the game is running? SDL (both 1.2 and 2.x) do that too.

Also, I see nothing bad with romantic visual novels. :)
Day of the Tentacle Now Available On Linux

While I haven't looked at their sources (so I can't say for 100% certain), I very much doubt that Day of the Tentacle Remastered uses ScummVM internally.
Legal issues aside:
1) Using a hexeditor or the "strings" tool, I don't see anything obvious in the binary to suspect that
2) Both Day of the Tentacle and Maniac Mansion are build with LucasArts' original SCUMM system. Yes, they're years apart and have each distinct codepaths for several features, but they're still very much alike. So since Day of the Tentacle is running on their own remastered SCUMM engine, it should be no problem also making Maniac Mansion run on it
In short: they wouldn't need to use ScummVM and I don't see any signs they did.

Quoting: subCan you explain in short how MM1 is (technically) included in the game?TL;DR: No.
Does it use the ScummVM engine?

That is pretty neat indeed, yes. :)
I'm personally not a fan of that macro assembly dialect they used on the C64 side, but YMMV.
For somewhat related historically significant assembly code, there's the (assembly) sources for the original Apollo 11 guidance computer. On GitHub here: https://github.com/chrislgarry/Apollo-11 [External Link] and more information here: http://www.ibiblio.org/apollo/ [External Link].

Well, depends on what you mean by choose-your-own-adventure. If you mean the simple variant that just connects sections together by "If X go to page Y", then no.
They also track stats (that differ from game to game). So doing something might, say, increase or decrease your wealth or your compassion, which enables/disables other options later on. In some of them, there's also some light randomness: an option might succeed or fail depending on a hidden dice roll.
As such, they're more like more mid-complex gamebooks. Thinks the Lone Wolf series or solo pen-and-paper roleplaying adventures.
From a literary genre point of view, they're a pretty widespread bunch. There's pulpy SF, there's superheros, there's fantasy. It is very much genre fiction, though.
However, you will have to read a lot. The main action you're doing while playing them is reading. There's no way around that. If this is not your idea of a good game, then they're not for you.
