Developers And The Dreaded Platform Listing Of "PC"

We have Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, and let's face it Ubuntu Linux mainly even though people of other distro's don't like to admit it and will probably jump down my throat for even stating it, but Ubuntu is the single most popular distro around, it is the only distro Steam officially supports for a reason. That's a whole 'nother argument altogether though so try not to focus on that too much.I am sorry, but if you did not want people to jump down your throat why did you even bring it up? There is stating an on topic opinion in an editorial and then there is flame bait. I could go into a huge rant about the difference between a plurality and an actual majority, and how Ubuntu most definitely does not have an absolute majority and games the system through it's plurality status, but I will pay enough deference to the main point of the article to just leave this here.
Quoting: Quote from AnonymousTo be fair, those apple ads don't actually mention Windows. They could be referring to all PC operating systems. Even though we know those things don't apply to Linux. The distinction between Apple and non-Apple hardware became a moot point when they adopted the x86 architecture though - which they had already done by the time those advertisements came out.
Quoting: Quote from SpeedsterMaybe we're getting to the point where soon the key distinction can be between "PC" and "mobile" hardware platformsProblem is those terms do not work that well either - is a laptop not a "mobile" hardware platform? And a smart phone is often the most "personal" piece of computing people regularly use. In the end, this whole names debate is kind of a stupid exercise, which is only worth arguing about because it does still have an effect on consumers, for some stupid reason.

Quoting: Quote from n30p1r4t3Green light!Well, if it follows the pattern. A lot of developers seem to take advantage of Desura's alphafunding in order to build a project up enough to get greenlit. Not that I can complain too much, as it ensures a non-Steam release at the end of it.

Postal 2 DLC Details Revealed

Something which was discussed on the RWS forums: the DLC will include some new recordings from Rick Hunter, mostly unused files that were originally going to be included with Postal III. As to why Rick Hunter was previously unavailable and Corey Cruise was cast in PIII, Toploader has explained that "Rick went AWOL over the time we needed him and was impossible to get hold of. He's around again now but this being a free patch we'll work with the assets we already have rather than paying for more, but yeah should be able to add a bit more variety anyhow."

ID Software Moving Further Away From Linux, QuakeLive Going Native

Quoting: Quote from e8hffffId Software isn't that good as a game developer. Since Quake3/Wolfenstein everything has been pretty bad, and consider their older games are basic, it doesn't say much for John Carmack and the company. They make corridor railed games with little interaction, so if they leave Android/Linux/Mac field nothing really lost.I can't speak for Rage, but every previous id game has had its merits, and they definitely were not "railed games". Doom 3 even offered a lot of interactions and side details to find and enjoy; they were never Call of Duty where you actually get penalized for exploring. And if you can not find something to appreciate in their older titles then you obviously have no notion of the historical context or just how much innovations were present in them.
Quoting: Quote from HolgerLinux ports might have been written by only one man but this was supported by the company (unless he did all this stuff in the sparetime). Also the release of the engine source code for Doom and Quake was supported by the company. Saying the Linux ports and the resulting eco-system was the result of one man indeed is really FUD :)No, you are still the one spreading FUD. The only officially supported Linux ports by id were Quake III Arena and Quake Live; all the rest were side-projects done by employees in their spare time. Timothée Besset ported all of the id games with Linux ports post Loki, and all of them had the consent but not the support of the management. When Zenimax purchased them, they changed this by no longer allowing the release of unsupported binaries, meaning that only official Linux ports could be made, which id was never really willing to do since the Loki Software debacle.
Quoting: Quote from HolgerSo this is FUD ? Have fun developing you first game for Linux, Android, Windows and MacOS. Then do support yourself and report what causes most report issue.I am not in a position to doubt your experiences, but they are indeed different than some of the others I have heard reported. No piece of software is the same, so neither will be the QA experience, on any platform.

I think this is the key here:
And Carmack is right - objectively source code releases are more important. But Zenimax should never have been around to bully id in the first place.
Whenever I hear Carmack speak it is like a captive man, forced to say things and bend his own thoughts to accept a paradigm he would never have assented to even ten years ago. I do not know what catastrophe occurred to make id willingly be forced under their thumb, but the fact that it has left a hollow shell of a developer is probably the saddest part of all of this.
At least we have still gotten the source code to Doom 3 and Doom 3: BFG. Hopefully Rage as well somewhere down the line.
Zenimax doesn't have any policy of 'unofficial binaries' like Id used to have, I have argued for their value (mostly in the context of experimental Windows features, but Linux would also benefit), but my forceful internal pushes have been for the continuation of Id Software's open source code releases, which I feel have broader benefits than unsupported Linux binaries.http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/121945-John-Carmack-Argues-Against-Native-Linux-Games [External Link]

Quoting: Quote from Mike FrettThanks for that DRM Free list scaine, that was news to me. Actually Hamish, I have a 6670 and the Open Source Radeon drivers work really good, in some instances, better than fglrx. Nothing to be ashamed of, and if anything it's Nvidia who should be ashamed not to even have an Open Source driver of their own, some guys had to reverse engineer one.Hey, I am not ashamed - I love my Radeon HD 4670 running on R600g. One of the best $40s I ever spent. ^_^

Quoting: Quote from fabertaweThis is not aimed at anyone specifically... I still don't understand why anyone who not only doesn't use Steam but detests what it stands for, would want to post in a thread celebrating it! It doesn't add anything :PI generally do not come and rain on other people's parades without a reason, but here Liam left in the invitation.
Quoting: Quote from philip550cYou use the open source drivers right?Yes, I do. I do not see why that is relevant, except as another example of how my gaming experience has improved by leaps and bounds over the past few years with or without Valve.
Quoting: Quote from DrMcCoyIndeed, that bothers me to. There is a reason why languages include quantifier words - because a lot of things are not so easily quantified.Quoting: Quote from HadBabitsEveryone agrees that Canonical has done a lot of good in promoting LinuxI wish people would stop trying to speak for everyone. I sure as hell don't agree!
