GZDoom 4.6.0 rolls out with widescreen graphics for Heretic and Hexen
25 May 2021 at 7:06 am UTC

Quoting: Avehicle7887Been playing Blade of Agony lately, solid 10/10 commercial quality grade game.

I've only had a chance to play the first half-dozen levels or so, but I must say they did a fine job on it.

Humble Bundle plan to put the much loved sliders back on bundle pages

I suspect most people never change the defaults, so just set the defaults to the "desirable" settings, and let those who wish to customize do so?

Proton Experimental gets upgraded, Forza Horizon 4 playable and Origin Overlay works
24 April 2021 at 3:34 am UTC

Quoting: fagnerlnThis game worked on the past because it used DX11, after some updates they cut off the DX11 version, now it runs only DX12

Ah, so that's not really a Proton problem, but rather that the game itself changed. It's the game developers that removed / broke support for users without DX12. No less frustrating for you, but hardly a reason to complain about Proton development.

Proton Experimental gets upgraded, Forza Horizon 4 playable and Origin Overlay works

Quoting: leillo1975This game worked on past. I think they should be a little more concerned about not messing up some games to make others work. I spent my money on that game and now I can't enjoy it.

That's why it's handy to be able to switch between multiple Proton versions. It would be handy if they had a "community recommended" Proton version, and allowed voting (sort of like the Steam Controller profiles).

Quoting: LoftyIt's probably based on a logical hash of some sort and not a random number. Im going to get schooled shortly on posting this

LOL! It's a git commit, which is a hash, yes. If you don't know what it is (and don't want to sort it out), then it's not for you, other than to know a stable release will have it eventually.

Linux Kernel dev bans University of Minnesota for sending malicious patches

Quoting: kokoko3kLinux needs more code quality control in the first place

I think good code reviews are under-appreciated. As someone who spends quite a bit of time reviewing other people's code submissions to see what they need to improve/fix, I can tell you it's way less "fun" than writing code yourself. Sometimes it's interesting to see how someone does something clever, but most of the time it's "should I just rewrite this myself, or take the time to explain why it's wrong?"

Make sure your NVIDIA drivers are up to date, new security issues detailed
21 April 2021 at 6:34 am UTC

Isn't the 390 series too old to support any RTX chipsets? Sounds like (at least one of) the bugs have been around for quite some time.

Edit: maybe they updated the page since the article was written, but they do list GeForce as well as "NVIDIA RTX/Quadro, NVS"
Also, you can see that R390 was only affected by one of the issues, so perhaps the other only affects newer hardware; the CVE description is too vague to tell for sure.

Radeon Software for Linux 21.10 brings Vulkan Ray Tracing in preview
21 April 2021 at 6:30 am UTC

Quoting: Cyba.CowboyDo the NVIDIA drivers support ray-tracing yet?

Since before there were official Vulkan extensions for it. Quake II RTX in the screenshot above was released by Nvidia.

FMV adventure Dark Nights with Poe and Munro released for Linux

Quoting: robvvI hadn't played an FMV game since Phantasmagoria

Ah, that one and Gabriel Knight: A Beast Within were awesome! Sierra didn't make very many before they switched over to cartoon style animation (too expensive to make, probably), but I thought it was some of their best work. The Tex Murphy games were also great.
