Epic Games have rolled out Unreal Engine 4.21 preview, with Linux improvements
11 Oct 2018 at 1:20 pm UTC

The 4.20 was already very good. Finally responsive and everything was working as it should. I spent an entire day to make the project that was previously on 4.17, but it was worth of it. These improvements doesnt's seem too interesting but I will wait for the release of this version.

Quoting: poisondReal time ray-tracing is the holy grail of computer graphics, and it's great that some company has finally started (partially) implementing it.
But even for windows users it's probably not worth it due to the old catch 22. There's no games making use of it (yet) and until those features trickle down to low cost mainstream GPUs there probably won't be a whole lot.

Even more so for linux users. Regardless of NVidias awesome day one support for the features, my magic crystal ball says that it's likely going to be at least 1-2 GPU generations till we see any game on linux making use of it. So yeah, not worth it.
In the movie industry it will be used immediately. That's why they have Linux drivers ready the day one.

The End of the Sun is a first-person adventure game inspired by Slavic mythology and legends

I like it. In this video, I saw many object objects I used to see in the village where my mother is born. But it really needs some fantastic Slavic music just like it's in the Witcher.

Linux game porter Ryan 'Icculus' Gordon is looking for new games to bring to Linux

If I was him and if I had hes knowledge and time to do what I really love, I would contribute to something from what the benefits for Linux gaming would be the biggest. In my opinion, it would be the work to make Unreal Engine for Linux to become in the best possible shape. I agree completely that he's totally wasting his talents and time to something totally insignificant. Also and again, if I was him, I would consider finding other people that would like to join me, people that love porting games to Linux (and Mac maybe) and would try to do the same thing like Feral is doing. He's obviously a master in this branch and he could profit from it and make the real success story from it.

And, yes, the games I'm making are 100% made on Linux. So, it's perfectly possible. :D

It's working almost perfectly. I'm working in it from 4.15. Now it's 4.19 already.
Fully featured, fully functional, nothing lost by using Linux? If so there's been quite the progress over the last year or so. Great!
Yes, in fact. I still didn't find anything that doesn't work.
I'm sure that exporting for Windows doesn't work, but it's not what you are asking. Also, not sure if building projects for Android and iOS works too. I still didn't try that. But, everything I needed works. Compiling and building projects for Linux works perfectly.

But yes. Working in 4.14 version was difficult. But that was about 2 years ago, if I remember correctly.

The main problem with UE4 is that the people can't make Linux build from Windows where most of them are developing projects. And also, if your project become too complex, most probably it will not work if you try to open in UE for Linux what you done in UE for Windows (or vice versa).

Quoting: Kimyrielle12 million? oO

No wonder that most Indie games look so bad. I don't think they can blow 12 million on art assets...
I laughed a little when I read this few days ago. It's exaggerated a little. I mean, in last year only I created only myself about 1/4 of what they are offering here of models etc. and I didn't earn 1/4 of 12 millions. I really love Epic, but it's more like a cool news title. Also, I don't like to use anything that is offered from the other people, or can be brought. It's always missing something and it's never how I want it to be. So, I love creating everything for my projects. Models, sound effects etc. Sound effects especially are never what I want and I love creating them.

Quoting: KimyrielleCan these be used in other game engines (*cough* Godot), or did Epic disallow that?
No. It can't be used with other engines. But, just try UE4 and you will forgot everything about Godot etc in a few hours.
