Unity games are coming to Fortnite as Epic continue attempting to build a metaverse thing
19 Nov 2025 at 3:11 pm UTC

The "working" version of the metaverse likely will be UGC, with strong emphasis on mobile, similar to Roblox. Some Steam Machines will be just a grain of sand in the universe in comparison. Maybe not in our perception, but in the market as a whole.
Also, anti-cheat is getting more and more restrictive throughout the industry, and Valve said they are not interested in supporting kernel anti-cheat. Once the Supreme Court has likely rejected Apple's appeal, the only connection between Epic and Valve I can think of would be another lawsuit, this time against Valve's 30% cut.

That console OS looks a lot like that in Flakpanzer Gepard, what a coincidence.
Which btw. is Windows. And is said to crash when you push buttons in the wrong order (not joking)...

Linux players getting banned on Apex Legends again

Honestly, duplicating kernel driver anti-cheat functionality in user-space is even dumber than invasive kernel-mode anti-cheat. Probably not very popular opinion on a site that's dedicated to Linux gaming, but I wonder why it even is semi-supported by some games at all. I really don's see why Windows users should be fine with a game dev making exceptions for less intrusive anti-cheat for a tiny minority of players.

Recent NVIDIA drivers are causing issues for Proton
18 Aug 2023 at 2:20 pm UTC Likes: 1

I had issues with Proton screwing up installation of d3d9x DLLs also on systems where never anything Nvidia-related was installed. Something in Proton's prefix setup procedure is very weak in this regard, it's basically just copying/linking files + DLL load order override.

Apex Legends banning some Linux players, keep an eye out Steam Deck players

What about Vulkan layers such as vkbasalt? On Windows with D3D, you need to put files into the game directory to make games load ReShade, which usually is blocked by anti-cheat systems. This is not the case with Vulkan layers, so it might be easier to shoot yourself in the foot if anti-cheat instead recognizes this as a cheat.

Just guessing at this point, though. It could well be something entirely different.

GE-Proton removes the dxvk-async patch in version 7-45

Quoting: iWeaker4YouIt was never the best option, there are always visual effects, only in very specific cases was it worth it
It was/is a good option in many cases and the visual issues often aren't even noticeable.
Still true in e.g. Assassin's Creed Odyssey, there is still atrocious stutter when riding through settlements with VK_EXT_graphics_pipeline_library pre-compile vs. async.
It's also popular among some Windows users to mitigate shader compile stutter in various Unreal Engine games.

Vulkan Video 1.0 released with the Vulkan 1.3.238 spec update

Quoting: Mar2ckWould this be able to solve the VDPAU vs VA-API vs NVDEC problem?
Better, you can even add Windows and Android hwdec APIs to that list. But with some bad luck, support outside of Nvidia and Mesa drivers will be lackluster. So hopefully future major stable Vulkan versions will be rather strict about it as a requirement (no idea if that's a realistic expectation).

A new Proton Experimental release hooks up NVAPI for lots of games on Linux

Quoting: mr-victoryThe effect is that you no longer need to use launch parameters to use DLSS, Nvidia Reflex etc. on these games.
Toggling Reflex without LatencyFlex likely still does nothing, unfortunately.

DXVK 1.10.3 out with work for Halo Infinite plus better Stray performance for Proton
3 Aug 2022 at 12:52 pm UTC

I'd use VKD3D-Proton instead in Stray (-dx12), it has less harsh streaming slow-downs vs. D3D11/DXVK. Also, some scenes that are prone to be CPU bound run massively faster. Though for whatever weird reason, you also need to enable UE PSO cache via UE config to avoid re-compilation of all shaders between sessions, even though VKD3D-Proton already creates its own cache.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D releases April 20, more Zen processors on the way

You can probably save a few bucks by feeding the 5800X3D cheap RAM. But if you can afford a >400€$ CPU, you likely can also buy decent enough RAM. Target audience seems to be owners of Zen 1 or 2 CPUs. Otherwise it does not occur to me why you would want to buy this CPU now with Zen 4 around the corner.
