GOG are ending their 'Fair Price Package program', soon after letting staff go

Quoting: Phlebiac
Quoting: einherjarIt's some kind of "half hearted" Linux support.
For those who weren't around back then:

Thanks, I wasn't around then and it's an interesting read.

GOG have been supporting Linux as was discussed back then for years, yet people keep whining.

I wish people were more honest. Like most Windows users won't ever use anything else most Steam users won't use anything else either. It's change, it's inconvenient and people don't like that. I understand, just cut the excuses, please.

It's quite a bit of money for people outside the US, given that often the price is €=$. They should probably have promoted the fair price package a bit more.

I hope it helps them stay afloat and improve.

So how does it actually work? Mod.io? Integration in launchers like GOG Galaxy?

There's a new release candidate of OBS Studio out with a VAAPI video encoder on Linux

Quoting: Brisse
Quoting: Sir_DiealotI'm not too familiar with the VAAPI details. Is it not detrimental to the performance of the GPU for games? Is the encoding quality on par with CPU encoding?
GPU's have fixed function blocks specifically for encoding and decoding video. This is a part of the GPU that normally just sits there and does nothing while you are gaming. The performance loss while gaming and encoding video at the same time is therefore insignificant.

Yes, the quality is usually slightly worse than x264 running on a CPU, but at the same time it can be a hundred times faster which makes it very useful for some use cases, and it's great for those without powerful 8+ core CPU's. Even for those with a powerful CPU, there are cases where you might consider hardware accelerated encoding, such as when recording locally and you aren't constrained by bitrate. Something like 4k@60fps can be extremely taxing even on a high end CPU, but a GPU that supports it won't even break a sweat.
Thanks, but isn't GPU bandwidth also a consideration?

The developer occasionally streams on Twitch, in case anyone is interested in that kind of thing. He writes the game in C++ and Lua. https://www.twitch.tv/epyoncf [External Link]

I'm more excited about the audio features (especially multitrack, whatever that means exactly, and a built in limiter). Due to the lack of any audio plug-in support we are pretty much limited to the built in effects unless you go to great length and try to get OBS to work nicely with external effects (JACK, PolypAudio).

I'm not too familiar with the VAAPI details. Is it not detrimental to the performance of the GPU for games? Is the encoding quality on par with CPU encoding?

The release notes don't mention any bug fixes, so it's hard to say what the feature vs. fix balance looks like. I'd rather have them fix their bugs and improve their codebase than add features. Try running OBS in Valgrind if you are up for a little shock.

Can't say anything yet about the game proper, but don't get it if you have a minimum requirements machine.

On a system that's roughly minimum specs it runs but is practically unplayable, definitely not enjoyable. I tested it just now on a Laptop running Ubuntu (mate or somesuch) from 2011 with i3 (Sandy Bridge), dedicated Nvidia card and 4 GB of memory. I suspect the memory is the main issue and it starts swapping. The game takes about 5 minutes to start and 15 to close, everything is super sluggish.

So that's a whooping 41 titles now, 1/3 of which is Sam & Max. How many of those don't run in stock WINE? How many of those are platinum or Gold on https://appdb.winehq.org/ [External Link] anyway?

I love the art style and think I might like the game. Having a EA version and releasing a Linux version on release only seems... weird. I believe it when I see it.

Game store itch releases a brand new client, plus a small interview

Itch.io is truly awesome.
I've used it for gamejams and if I ever release a proper game I'll do it on itch and consider other stores second.
In the meanwhile I'll try and buy more on itch.io.
My preference: itch > gog > steam

The two issues it has is the small catalogue of well known titles and steam lock-in. The first issue is more immediate, but I suspect the second is the bigger issue. It also affects gog and the humble store (unless they are content with selling steam keys).
