Nightdive Studios show off how System Shock is returning to the original vision

Hmm. Okay. I'd concluded that it was pretty much unrecoverable - as he does so often, Shamus Young said more or less exactly what I was thinking [External Link] (long, but well worth a read) - but it sounds like there's at least the will now to return it to the original vision, rather than continue down the disastrous path they were on or just give up. I'm still not holding my breath, but it would be really nice to see it come good after all this.

The Humble Strategy Bundle has a few interesting Linux games

Empire: Total War is tempting, but Planetary Annihilation: TITANS looks like a no-brainer for less than a quid. Then again, it rankles that only one of the lowest-tier games is on Linux.

Fair enough. I think we're on the same page, just emphasising different parts. :)

NVIDIA dropping support for 32bit Linux this month, also dropping Fermi series support

Quoting: Mountain ManAnybody running a 32-bit OS in 2018 probably doesn't have the hardware capable of running any game released in the past few years anyway.
Exactly. I'm less bothered by this than distros dropping 32-bit support. An old 32-bit machine can still be perfectly servicable for some uses, but none of them involves a recent video card running on the latest proprietary drivers.

Quoting: Mountain ManI'm happy for people who like this series. I thought the 2015 Tomb Raider was a thoroughly mediocre on-a-rails experience, so I won't bother buying this one, but the good news is that there are so many top-quality games available for Linux these days that I can afford to be picky. :D
I think that's a little unfair. It certainly isn't nearly as good as the original developers - the writers especially - and mainstream reviewers thought it was, but it had its moments. I'm not sure where you're getting “on rails” from. The narrative tends to railroad the player (on at least two occassions, Lara could have shot the boss guy and ended the whole thing there and then, but inexplicably didn't because story), however there were plenty of open areas that rewarded exploration, and until just before the final battle you can return to any of them at any time.

That said, I first played through it on the Xbox 360 and I still haven't bothered to finish it on Linux yet. Like so many modern “AAA” games, it doesn't really invite a second playthrough.

Quoting: DuncApparently - I just discovered this today - the retro controller works as a paddle if you rotate the stick. It remains to be seen how well that'll work, but it's a cool idea.
I can't recall if this is correct. The 2600 classic joysticks on my Flashback 2 system don't do this.
I mean the ones for the new VCS.

As I say, it may or may not work as well as a real paddle. It all depends on how it's implemented. I can imagine it being just like a paddle with nice, fine, smooth control, but then will that get in the way of it functioning well as a joystick? As with everything involving this console, we'll just have to wait and see.

To me, Atari + Key Element = PADDLES :D

Quoting: liamdaweFor those having issues, letting Feral's support team know is a good first step: http://support.feralinteractive.com/en/contact/ [External Link]

Might be a simple packaging issue they can solve.
There are Windows users on the Steam forum with the same issue, so I doubt it.

As for my specific problem - even the commandline solution wouldn't work - I booted into my distro-hopping partition (Void Linux, at the moment) installed Steam, symlinked my main Steam directory, ran the rungameid command, and it downloaded perfectly. Reboot back into my main install, and there it is. :)

It's a workaround, at least. Yay Linux!

Quoting: AkienGo to https://steamdb.info/app/439890/ [External Link] and click the "Free" button, and let it open the steam:// URI in your Steam client. That worked for me to add it as an owned DLC.
Argh. Doesn't work for me. The Steam client opens at the Hitman page, but nothing happens.

Oh, well. I have a couple of weeks to figure it out, at least...

Um. Okay. Seems like a pointless move that will only cause confusion with those of us who prefer to call the 2600 by its original name, but whatever.

The controller does look nice. Very (suspiciously?) like an XBox 360 controller, but that's no bad thing at all. It's hard to tell if the D-pad is a simple clicky one or a Steam-style touchpad. I'd guess the former, since it already has two analogue sticks, but if the thing's going to run Steam, some kind of mouse-like control wouldn't be a bad idea.

Still amusing they listed us on their press page.
I like the way they put you above Forbes, Engadget, and EuroGamer. :)

Quoting: ertuquequeMy guess is that they'll use AMDs new Ryzen V embedded processor (like the Smach Z portable game console) and they were waiting to finalize the related paperwork to announce it properly... But again, that's just my guess.
Very possible. I still think the announcement of the “pause” coming so close to their meeting with Nolan Bushnell was too much of a coincidence. In his time, he's done things right, done things wrong, and knows the difference. I wouldn't be surprised if he furnished them with a few home truths back in December. Of course, maybe that's what he told them: “Don't run with this until you have everything in writing”. It was probably a combination of things. It usually is.

Overall, I'm in kind of the same place as Liam. If it appears, it should be a good thing, both in itself and for Linux gaming. But there's something at the back of my head that keeps whispering, “vaporware”. The lack of information, let alone demonstrations, seems fishy. Then again, how many of us thought much the same thing about Phoronix's Valve reports before they were confirmed?

I don't know. Wait and see, I suppose.
