AMD's OpenGL Performance Is Nothing Close To Nvidia On This Benchmark
31 May 2014 at 12:56 pm UTC Likes: 1

Quoting: tmtvlI'd like to see that benchmark being done with the FOSS drivers, I don't think the results be this cut and dry.
The FOSS drivers should be the only ones that matter anyway, if you use proprietary drivers you might as well run Windows.
I will be doing more FOSS radeon benchmarks very soon to coincide with mesa 10.2

Also it's very true that radeon MUST also be tested in these sort of benchmarks.

Quoting: Anonymousamd sucks. I hope they go out of business. I really do.
So you want Nvidia to be a Monopoly?
This. Wake up people, this is why Microsoft have a bleeding control over desktops. Other operating systems went out of business due to problems of any kind and MS just took CONTROL of the general desktop market, its taken a long time for us to start competing again.

On the state of AMD. Their open drivers are what keep me sane these days. The catalyst drivers are a mess and the open ones are great for what they are. If AMD didn't support Open I would be deeply saddened but at the moment I'm just nervous for their future.

In all honesty, if they did a Intel and just fully open the lot then they would actually gain a lot of sales for likeminded people who support open over preformance.

And just a stab in the dark but Nvidia have been the most anti-competitive company in the GPU space since Microsofts numerous protocols that we have had to catchup on. The sheer number of prop extensions they have pushed developers to use has not helped AMD one bit.

Quoting: liamdaweI also found that out by going to order, seeing the cost at $13 just for shipping to me :(
They are new though, I hope they can sort minor issues out.
Not to good for me either then :/ . Last time I made orders from 'murica I had to sort out all sorts of international fees.

Left 4 Dead 3 & Half-Life 3 Are Real According To The Creator Of Counter Strike
22 May 2014 at 5:44 pm UTC

Valve secretly love these kind of leaks. Any news like this generates waves of hype for them. I'm sorta glad in a way that Half-Life 3 isn't out yet because I want a game that can actually trump the previous games, look at least an equal step up between source 2 and source as goldsrc as source did and also for valve to perfect their ports to an even greater quality.

I AM hyped for Left 4 Dead 3, the series is one of the best us gamers have and its a comfort to know valve are still making games XD. And that it will have a storyline, the Left 4 Dead 2 maps were very well designed and the comics were Ace!

Steam In-Home Streaming Now Open To All, Linux Streaming To Come Soon

Quoting: c00kie55low latency network and gpu horsepower on the streaming server will be the most importent factors

so other than network the specs of the host machine is practically the only thing that matter?

but offcourse client needs to be able to stream the picture and send back input from controller whitout lagging

iam so slow Half-Shot somehow beat me ...
I have a low latency connection :P

It's important to also stress the client needs to be fairly ok too though. I have a AMD A4 APU in my laptop, 4GB ram and Arch Linux but it still has a slow hardware decode.

Alienware State Their Steam Machine Won't Be Very Profitable

Quoting: FTW"This will absolutely be the least profitable system we ever sell."

Because Alienware can't sell it for 2x the price as they would with the rest of their computers.
This!

Steam In-Home Streaming Now Open To All, Linux Streaming To Come Soon

Quoting: wleoncioHave they even given anyone a hint on how soon is "soon"? I can't wait to be able to use my Macbook as a host so I can play a few non-Linux games on my "Steam Machine".
It used to work on all 3 platforms but due to stability only Windows was kept on. I don't think its going to be a long wait.

Quoting: wleoncioAnother thing I couldn't figure out is how the processing power is distributed. I mean, the performance cap will be set by the slower machine or are the specs of the host machine practically the only thing that matter?
None of the power is distrobuted in the way that a data center distrobutes if that's what you mean. The host will be using and have avaliable the same amount of power as if you were in front of it. The client only needs enough to be able to hardware decode a stream at the desired resolutuion and framerate while transmitting controls.

New Unreal Tournament In The Works, Could See A Native Linux Version
3 May 2014 at 9:25 am UTC

Quoting: lordfraggerLet's hope they go back to the UT 2k3 and before formula. I completely lost interest once they introduced vehicles and large maps.
I don't mind new mechanics as long as they keep them in seperate gamemodes. There is nothing wrong with pushing the engines limits if you keep everybody happy with classic gamemodes.

Team Fortress 2 did this when they added all the classic gamemodes and subsequently there is a competitive scene for it.

Gigabyte's AMD Mini Gaming PC Gets A Downvote For Poor Linux Support

I still don't know where I stand with AMD. I love having a good FOSS driver that is quickly gaining features and preformance, and is actually included with the kernel but AMD themselves need to do more, catalyst is a dead end.

However my AMD processor is still good after 5-6 years, and Intel give me no incentive to shell out my piles of cash.
