Time to blow the dust off your VR headset - Metro Awakening is coming

Hopefully it works with Proton!

If you use VR on Linux, what are your top issues you want to see solved this year?
  • Update for proper OpenXR support. Beat Saber, Pistol Whip, etc. don't work since their OpenXR updates
  • Performance. Async Reprojection is broken for nVidia users
  • Feature parity with the Windows Steam VR version, e.g. being able to pin any desktop Window in the VR space. Unfortunately XRDesktop seems abandoned.

And then of course more games designed for VR! I hope Horizon Call of the Mountain comes to PCVR at some point.
Wanderer seems a really good game too, except that game breaking bug, because an ingame video doesn't play and you cannot progress. Otherwise visuals, performance and game are really good. Maybe the remaster version uses a different video player that works with Proton.

AYANEO NEXT LITE no longer ships with SteamOS-like HoloISO Linux - Windows 11 instead

OOf... I guess the (social) media attraction the announcement of not shipping with Windows got, also attracted Microsoft. And they've spend some $ so they ship with Windows instead. They could have shipped it with HoloISO and offer Windows drivers like Valve does with the Deck. As they do it now the other way round, I guess some money got involved.

Unified Linux Wine Game Launcher aims to improve Windows games on Linux / Steam Deck

Being able to use protonfixes e.g. via Heroic would be really helpful. But there should probably be an option/detection with launcher is used, as e.g. Fall Guys on Steam doesn't need any protonfixes anymore, but via Heroic you still have to apply some steps (e.g. running the EOS installer manually).

NVIDIA 535.154.05 for Linux brings a few bug fixes

535 had quite some weird issues. I've upgraded to 545 already, there these issues seem not to happen.
Good to see they fix the current stable branch.

THE FINALS now appears to work on Steam Deck and Desktop Linux

Too bad when publisher don't give an update on EAC support after enabling it explicitly. Are they afraid of too many Linux gamers hopping onto their game and actually play it?
Fall Guys works for a while now, the Steam version doesn't even need any adjustments anymore. Insurgency: Sandstorm works with EOS (the online variant without a local EAC dll), also no official statement. Predator: Hunting Ground works. Often only with Proton Experimental, but these games work. There had been some occurances where EAC/EOS was in "data collection mode" or so, where it seemed to work, but stopped working after a while without updates. The games mentioned are working for months now though, so I guess they must have been enabled for Wine/Deck/Proton by the publisher.

Maybe they want to have the option to disable it again, without people being able to complain, as they never officially enabled it.

Marvel's Midnight Suns and Two Point Campus headline Humble Choice for January 2024

Quoting: Expalphalog*except for using "Glorious Eggroll" - I still have absolutely no idea what that is, how to get it, or how to use it.
Glorious Eggroll is a maintainer of a custom proton fork, he is using Valve's Proton and applies updates, patches and fixes. It can be installed additionally to Valve's Proton and then be selected manually when clicking on Properties, Compatibility and then check "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatiblity tool".
An easy way to install Proton-GE (GE for the initials, since Proton 8 it's called GE-Proton even) is to use a program called ProtonUp-QT.

There are many videos on youtube how to get this done, here's the one from Liam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6doaQNnHR60 [External Link]

Imho Proton Experimental is the best choice in general, as it's officially supported by Valve and reported issues should be based on their versions. GE-Proton is suited best, when specific fixes are needed, e.g. video playback with the media foundation codecs. Valve cannot include these codecs and transcoding the videos takes time.

Proton Experimental brings more HDR + Steam Overlay hack for Easy Anti-Cheat from EOS

  • Fixed intermittent crash in Beat Saber.
That one is interesting. Just today I tried VR on Linux again, and Beat Saber crashed. I thought it would be related to my 20.04 LTS Ubuntu install, so I upgraded to 22.04 today. And the crash didn't happen again, looks like the new Proton Experimental version helped, and not my Ubuntu upgrade

Unfortunately latest Beat Saber version is still borked and you have to select 1.29 legacy from the beta branch.

For me it's 50% of my playtime on Steam Deck!
Unfortunately the VR situation is currently not in a good state for me (maybe due to nvidia), so I have 1% of playtime on that other OS... I know, what a shame! But I really enjoy playing VR and as it barely ran recently on Linux, I've chosen to enjoy it at least a little bit. Man, last year it was all running so well, and today so many things are borked with VR on Linux. I have hope Valve, nVidia and Unity will get together and fix those issues... and maybe that Deckard project will improve things... but I also heard that the new Steam Link VR App doesn't work on Linux. So, I'm afraid it'll be borked for a bit longer.

Fortnite on Linux / Steam Deck? Not until 'tens of millions of users'
13 Dec 2023 at 4:14 pm UTC Likes: 3

Not commenting on Fortnite. but on the bright side, though delisted on Steam: Fall Guys is now a click-install-and-play experience. They added the Proton EasyAntiCheat Runtime dependency and the game already works (with less and less extra hassle) on Steam Deck and Linux for quite a while.

Imho it could become now a verified title for the Steam Deck. With Heroic it's still a bit more effort, but works as well once the extra steps for getting Epic Online Services installed are done. But if you prefer a simple solution, you can still get Fall Guys Steam keys online.

Steam Deck global top seller again thanks to cheaper LCDs and the Steam Deck OLED
29 Nov 2023 at 12:39 pm UTC Likes: 2

I got my OLED Deck on Monday... played Fall Guys (Steam version could now become verified, as they added [External Link] Proton Easy Anti-Cheat to the additional dependencies) and The Witness on it so far.

The LCD Deck is of course still awesome, but being able to directly compare both devices OLED vs LCD next to each other, I can see and feel the improvements. Buttons less squishy, trackpads have sigificantly improved, the slight decrease in weight, the longer battery life... and yes the screen of course. Just little improvements, but really well done over all.

Even though I also tested the ROG Ally and the Legion Go, I'd still recommend a Steam Deck. At least for the gaming aspect. Price is unbeaten (though the ROG Ally recently got a price drop) and though even the other two devices do have their unique selling points, regarding the complete package, Steam Deck is imho still the best option.

Increcible how these little PC gaming handheld devices have changed my gaming habits. I'm way less at my desktop now. I even learnt to manage how to play shooters (not in a skilled way though) with gamepad controls, where I thought I'd never be able to play them without keyboard (or MoveMaster for me) or mouse.
