New Steam Client Beta up with Linux updates, Valve prepping Proton 5.0-5
20 Mar 2020 at 1:36 pm UTC

Quoting: NanobangI just read an interesting article about Denuvo in Doom Eternal. [External Link] the tl,dr is that the Doom Eternal came with it's an additional .exe folder that is Denuvo-free. Yup, someone at Bethesda included a crack for their own game. :D It might be something to check out.
Yeah, I read that as well [External Link], but people tested Doom Eternal with Proton/Wine/Lutris and this denuvo-less exececutable already, but no luck.
After this faux-pas Bethesda could also remove Denuvo already... oh dear, I don't want to be that person who left that file in.

Quoting: lejimsterI'm a bit confused. Is Doom Eternal working or not on Protom yet? Unless denuvo is supported in proton I'm guessing we will have to wait like we did with Doom?
Atm it doesn't work, people can't get it to run according to the github issue [External Link]. It seems Vulkan driver related, but might also be additionally Denuvo related.

OBS Studio 25.0 is out with lots of new features for video creators

For those who where wondering about the browser source, seems like it wasn't included in OBS 25.0.0. At least not for me in the Ubuntu PPA. The upgrade to 25.0.1 fixes this.

Hopefully Proton 5.0-5 will also include patches to get Doom Eternal up and running, but maybe it also needs a gpu driver update. At least with 5.0-4 it seems not to work so far.
Well, maybe I should try Doom Eternal on Stadia. Really a pity Bethesda is not interested in supporting Desktop Linux, though ID Software once released well working Linux binaries for their games (Doom 3, Quake 4, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars...).
Otherwise, HL:A will be the next hype game to be played ;)

Half-Life: Alyx support for Linux aiming to arrive with Vulkan support post-release

It's playable ON Linux. I can live with that initially. Awesome they are going to release a native Version afterwards. Maybe again a Vulkan version that's only available on Linux, and Windows gamers need to deal with the "inferior" old API, har har har :D

We Linux streamers would be more or less screwed without OBS. I'm very happy this awesome software project exists and is pretty well maintained. The convenience it brings is without any competitor. I'm using OBS ever since, and except a minor issue here and there with capturing or with audio, it's quite stable and has a good performance.

Only thing I'm unhappy with right now is Ubuntu 19.10, where ffmpeg is compiled without nvenc support (I know I can compile it on my own, but I'd like to use the distribution maintained package). And OBS doesn't pick up the snap ffmpeg where nvenc support would be available. Although the OBS snap comes with nvenc support, I can't install any other 3rd party plugins (like input-overlay or NDI). I hope this get's solved in Ubuntu 20.04.

edit: aaah, nice: @m_wimpress on twitter [External Link]
Thanks to the assist from @rikmills88 I'm delighted to say the @nvidia nvenc ⚡ accelerated @FFmpeg has landed in #Ubuntu Focal Fossa. Projects like @OBSProject & @shotcutapp now have access to accelerated video encoding via both debs & snaps 🤘
I should have complained about this here earlier :D

2D isometric adventure 'BEAUTIFUL DESOLATION' now has a Linux Beta available

Quoting: TheSHEEEPI just cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the linux files.
I switched to the linux beta, uninstalled, reinstalled, restarted Steam, checking integrity, everything.

It still insists on downloading the Windows files and starting them via Proton.
When switching to the Linux beta, it downloads a 29MB update - not an 8GB one.
And when trying to start forcing the Steam Linux Runtime, it complains about the missing linux launch executable. Removing the specific use of any Steam Play tool "updates" the game -> back to its Windows version.
I have the same issue, did you get this sorted?

A note on using Steam Play Proton and counting the sales for Linux (updated)

Oof... lots of games bought on Linux and then not counted as Linux games... oh dear, that's quite a loss in visibility, hm?
I've bought quite some games since the release of Proton to play those games on Linux, and I'd really like the devs to see those numbers. But I probably haven't played them in since I bought them, and iirc the platform you bought the games on counts then.

Psyonix are ending support for Rocket League on both Linux and macOS (updated)

Oof, what a bummer. They really make it hard for us to enjoy gaming on Linux.

I remember the boiling steam interview, where Timothee Besset pointed out, that they showed them how to maintain the Linux port and that Psyonix was very interested in the quality of the port. So I guess it's not them who made the decision, but somebody above them... to maximize the profit.

Oh man... this was one was a bright light on the Linux gaming horizon...
