Is Steam giving you an annoying error message on Ubuntu 16.04? Here's a solution
26 April 2016 at 9:02 am UTC

After doing the Upgrade on a Thinkpad E145, steam didn't start for me at all

corben@linux:~$ steam
Running Steam on ubuntu 16.04 64-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
awk: /home/corben/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libtinfo.so.5: no version information available (required by /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libreadline.so.6)
grep: symbol lookup error: grep: undefined symbol: pcre_jit_stack_alloc
grep: symbol lookup error: grep: undefined symbol: pcre_jit_stack_alloc
grep: symbol lookup error: grep: undefined symbol: pcre_jit_stack_alloc
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1459198004)
libGL error: unable to load driver: radeonsi_dri.so
libGL error: driver pointer missing
libGL error: failed to load driver: radeonsi
libGL error: unable to load driver: swrast_dri.so
libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast

Found on the net, that the system installed version and the steam runtime version of libstdc++ differs:

corben@linux:~$ LD_PRELOAD='/usr/$LIB/libstdc++.so.6' DISPLAY=:0 steam

Steam started, but then I got the error mentioned in this article, so I installed the steam client from the Ubuntu repository, but the client again didn't start normally:

corben@linux:~$ steam
Running Steam on ubuntu 16.04 64-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
[2016-04-26 10:10:18] Startup - updater built Mar 31 2016 19:10:48
SteamUpdateUI: An X Error occurred
X Error of failed request:  BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)

With the LD_PRELOAD it starts, but that's quite annoying. But hey, I got the old steam launcher icon back, woohoo... -.-
Guess I will stay a bit longer with 14.04 and 15.10 until these issues are solved.

Oh yeah, I'm so looking forward to Everspace! Rockfish are developers from Fishlabs who made Galaxy on Fire 2, which is kind of a lightweight Elite. GoF2 is very popular on iOS. There are some parallels in graphic and sound-design, when watching the trailers ;)

As I only wanted to support this game, when a Linux version is coming, I reached out to them and got a positive answer. As they are a German Developer Studio, here is the google translated (and slightly corrected) answer they gave me while the kickstarter campaign was running (2015-08-17):

QuoteSo in software development it is of course always difficult with promises, since there can always be unforeseen problems. We have not tried to build a Linux version before, but the Unreal Engine seems to support Linux, so let's go with the assumption that we will not have to contend with too much problems.
The plan is that with reaching the Stretch Goal we will support PC, Mac and Linux on the first day. If the Stretch Goal is not reached, we still intend to deliver a Mac and Linux version, but we will probably have to wait a little, until the PC version flushed a little money in the coffers. But it will be the first thing after release, which we will be working on.

As the stretch goal has been reached, they will be working on it with a Linux (and Mac) version in mind from the start.
I have faith in promises the Germans are making ;)
They just have been to GDC and got a lot of positive feedback about the game, the actual ETA for the first Alpha is end of April. The first version for Linux and Mac is scheduled for Beta. Beta estimated delivery in 07/2016.

Does your mouse flicker or flash constantly in Unity games? Here's a solution

Doesn't work for me. I have this issue only on my Surface Pro 3 with an integrated intel GPU in the i7, running Ubuntu 15.10 with the neoreeps 4.3 kernel (https://github.com/neoreeps/surface-pro-3, which includes all the needed driver patches for the sp3).
But I got already used to it :-/

edit: oh, seems to have worked after a reboot. It looks like it also fixed another issue for me: I'm using synergy (http://synergy-project.org/), and I had to enter the screen twice before the mouse cursor was visible. Now it's visible each time I enter the screen. Cool 8)

Sad news. Did Feral give a statement already? I guess they were already working on the port and found unfixable issues.
