Quoting: chancho_zombiefor what is worth you can use an Android phone without google apps that's what amazon does for legal reasons (Fire OS) and there are a lot of android roms that work without google apps (ie copperhead os). I used lineage os without google apps for some time, the only thing that was missing is chromecast features that are part of google apps, but that was fixed with android oreo, now chromecast is fully part of Android open source project.- Agree, while possible to use G-less Android but one thing to remind is Amazon is abundance source of money, employees and probably IPs.

Quoting: chancho_zombieAnd if you are really paranoid and do not trust Android open source project based roms (that don't use google apps) you still have the alternative of Sailfish OS. Sailfish is a real linux system, rpm based.I'm not paranoid. Today, with Cambridge Analytica and mishandling data stuff (which changed my view on GDPR), I am just not a big fan on relying on Big Data and Silicon Valley on anything even on their open source projects.
I installed Sailfish on my phone but because it's not officially supported the support isn't stellar, but if you have a phone that's officially supported sailfish is great, privacy wise and has android app compatibility layer.

Google = Android and;
Android ≠ GPL Linux.
Removing all G-Apps (Maps, Service, Music, Youtube etc) without no alternative replacement to G-Apps and you'll get smartphones which are 'dumber' than java/feature/S40 phones. Come on, remember Ouya?
Android was born by mixing all licenses together. Some permissive licenses plus shitty manufacturer and also that 'notorious GPL-violating ARM' chip maker are one of many reasons why Android are fragmented with so many outdated and unsecured versions. I don't want my Steam or any account be compromised. Hell, that the reason why I not doing online banking on phone.
In other hand, I do agree Steam Controller should be allowed on native apps.
- If heavy thunderstorm (both wire and wireless), your internet will blackout for 3 days,
- Sudden internet interruption without any warning plus some providers even not offer any replacement like free data as apology to interruption,
- If some fucking assholes stealing cables, 7 days blackout (heard stories some neighbourhood blackout almost a month).
- 10 years ago, it's known fact that internet is the fastest and most reliable on wee hours. Today, while internet speed is fastest on anytime, the reliability is absolutely uncertain.
Those are most frequent problems I faced recently. As world known on 10th May 2018, Malaysia have new 'chief' in town (same old leader but with new hopes, new missions and new crews behind). Let see how these crews administering our blessed country.

Quoting: HoriI live in Romania and I'm not impressed, I don't like streaming. I still think it would be better if they start selling native Android games as well, many of the games on their Store already have Android versions.I do respect your opinion but I am totally disagree with Valve goes full Android. Let's be honest here;
I mean, sure, it could be nice every once in a while, but I don't see myself regularly using it, at all.
What I hope is that it will allow the Steam Controller to be used on native apps as well - that would be awesome!

Quoting: noxServices like this will likely help push countries with bad cellular connection in the right direction though. With more and more services requiring low latency and high speed connections, it'll likely affect the way things are built going forward. So in the end, it might just benefit you :)Agree, but you what? I heard that same thing 10 years ago when 3.5G/HSPA started to rolled in Malaysia. 10 years past, the same problems 10 years ago still persist especially in my town/city. Here's the list:

As I am currently work in food-processing enterprise (helping friend's small business, might seeking new job somewhere else as his business already stabilized), here is colloquial unit frequently used in my workplace.
1 cup, liquid = 250ml
1 cup, flour/anything powder = 225 gram approx, with 5g +- error.
1 cup, sugar = 200g approx.
1 tablespoon, liquid = 15ml, 3 teaspoon
1 tablespoon, flour/anything powder = 8-12 gram approx.
1 tablespoon, sugar = 12 g approx.
1 teaspoon, liquid = 5ml, 1/3 tablespoon
1 teaspoon, flour/anything powder = 3-7 gram approx.
1 teaspoon, sugar = 4g approx.
So, even you're already using metric system, it doesn't mean that you had "throwaway" your old tradition measurement out of your mind. Just need adapt it to your own way.

Quoting: EikeIn Malaysia (and I think Australia and New Zealand probably), every recipes written by locals, if mentions teaspoon, tablespoon, cup and so on; it is defined in colloquial metric measurement not imperial system.Quoting: Purple Library GuySo like, it's easier to think "2 teaspoons" than "howeverthefuckmany ml", and so to this day cooking is dominated by imperial measures.The teaspoon is equal to 1 fluid dram (or drachm) and thus 1⁄4 of a tablespoon or 1⁄8 of a fluid ounce.
Well, I didn't know this exists.
Our recipes go with "2 teaspoons" as well, but that's just "what approx. fits in two of your local teaspoons". :)

This is for y'all that are living in place where's internet is the best in the world (connectivity, speed and ping wise), so Steam Link app might the best thing y'all.
But for myself, I want truly mobile gaming devices. Streaming isn't substitute for my on-the-go gaming needs especially offline gaming.

The Steam Hardware Survey had some flaw causing cyber cafes to be over-counting users

Steam hwsurvey which related to;
cyber cafe (CC) which related also with;
PXE/network booting system which was/is used by some CCs especially;
50++ computers CCs where almost all CCs using;
Windows.

Quoting: wvstolzingCan you boot into a full desktop environment with that? I thought PXE boot did just enough to get a barebones boot image from a TFTP server, only to start an install on the local system. Just to try it out, I once installed Fedora on my laptop with a setup like that (PXE boot into tiny installer over TFTP, download everything else over http from a Fedora mirror), and I thought it was neat -- but booting into a complete system, and *using it* like that would be considerably neat-er!I think you're misinterpret my comment. I was talking about;
I'm curious because I eventually want to set up a couple of thin clients around the house, connected to my main desktop, once my other ancient computers kick the bucket entirely. So far I've tried multiseat (which is pretty trivial to set up thanks to systemd), though that's limited to the number of graphics outputs one has; VNC works ok with a bit of pulseaudio twiddling to get accompanying audio, but it's really slow.
...a quick google search suggests that even Raspberry Pi 3s are capable of this. hmmm...
Sorry about the wildly off-topic post, though. Slightly more on topic: 'cyber cafe's were huge in Turkey in the early 00s; I had Starcraft-addicted cousins who practically lived in those places. They're all but extinct nowadays though.

FYI: Some of my friends worked/working in cyber cafe. That's why I know some 'stories'.

Quoting: EikeYes PXE, most of big cyber cafe (50++ PCs) use this system. Easy to maintain. But, if BSOD..... :'( Good luck to employees. :DQuoting: tonRSome CC using harddrive-less computer, boot via LAN. (I don't know how to explained it correctly)It is correct. The technology is called PXE.

I don't know about China, but here in Malaysia, most CC buys their license in bulk (and cheaper also) instead of pirating because no one wants authorities having more excuses to raid your businesses.

Quoting: liamdaweNo, actually most CC formatting their computers every month (sometimes every week or day) to ensure no cheating hack residue on their computers. Cheating gamers (both adult and kids) sometimes installed the hack to easy win, troll their friend etc. Instead of searching the hack one-by-one, most owners just wipe out and installed new. Some CC using harddrive-less computer, boot via LAN. (I don't know how to explained it correctly)Quoting: 14Who knows what, possibly repeated Windows key changes due to piracy, repeated re-installs? Could have been a mix of many things.It turns out, however, that many cyber cafes manage their hardware in a way that was causing their customers to be over counted.Deep Freeze?

No shit. Cyber cafes (CC) still very big thing in Asia. Most of gamers went to CC to socialize with friends (including me sometimes) even do majority of their rigs at home are much powerful than what's available on CC. Some people I know gaming on console, so if they want to play PC games, they'll come to CC.
Sadly in my hometown. Some legit CC nowadays being 'sold' and become illegal slot machine gambling place. Hell, some town council starting to loose regulation on CC to combat illegal gambling. When I was secondary school, it's technically illegal for under 18 to enter. Nowadays, over-12 are allowed to enter as long outside school hours and before 11 PM. Also, todays CC also no longer had (or less) cigarette smells and much brighter ambience than 10-15 years ago.
Back to topic. At least Valve aware about the situation. With PUBG popularity starting to decline and rise of Fortnite (well, in my hometown), hwsurvey maybe starting normalise again. For linux gaming, probably increase in constant rate.
BTW, it's interesting to look on future of Linux gaming in eyes of Valve.
