Steam Beta update tweaks the new Big Picture Mode from Steam Deck for desktop
2 Nov 2022 at 5:27 am UTC

Still can't play Elden Ring with a controller with this new interface, because it appears to have no Desktop controller configuration option (at least not that I could find), and that is the only way it was working in the old Big Picture Mode (or desktop mode, for that matter).

Edit: I see the Desktop config in yesterday's update, but Elden Ring still doesn't work. :(

UNCHARTED: Legacy of Thieves Collection gets Steam Deck Verified ahead of release

I will get it at some point, but I've already played the first 3 ages ago, so I'm not chomping at the bit for this one. But I am really, really glad they're doing it, and definitely will get it sooner or later.

I did buy God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn, since I stopped buying consoles after the PS3, due to Valve's support of Linux. But I loved a lot of Sony's games. I wish they'd bring out all of the Resistance games on PC (and make a new one). Ratchet and Clank games were good, too. Looking forward to that SackBoy game, mostly for my son.

Valve bans devs from adding review scores and awards on Steam store assets

This is annoying when I look at my games in Big Picture mode (the mode I use 98% of the time). Example that come to mind immediately are: Dragon Quest XI S, Star Wars Squadrons, Mass Effect Collection... Super annoying. Call me anal or whatever, but I want a clean-looking grid of game art. I don't care about the rewards or review scores or whatever other non-title text is on there. I already bought the game. Stop selling it to me.

Thanks for the heads up! Looks like a title I might enjoy, will definitely give it a shot.

Linux user share on Steam continues rising — highest for years again

I've seen our numbers rise and fall many times over the years. It's hard to get hyped about this anymore, especially celebrating how large a percentage of Linux belongs to Steam Decks - many users of which likely don't know or care that it uses Linux under the hood.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Steam Decks are selling, I just wish they made up a teeny tiny percentage of Linux overall, as that'd mean our numbers overall are increasing greatly.

In any case, I think I'm too old to care much about any of this anymore. Valve has made gaming on Linux work significantly better than it ever was, though I don't forget the early days when I was actually buying Loki titles at EB Games every chance I could get... After many years of resistance, I've given up on any hope of native ports becoming the norm. I've embraced Proton, as it's clear this is Valve's path forward. Whatever happens now, so be it - it is what it is. I'm just enjoying the games when I have the free time for them. And I'm doing it on Linux, without having to resort to booting into an OS that hasn't existed in my house for 20 years.

Well, it'll be 20 years on the 18th of this month, but who's counting? ;)

Quoting: adolsonI loved this game. Bought it for Xbox, then later for GameCube, and even the [kinda crappy] GameBoy Advance port. Will buy it at some point for Linux, too.
Sadly, I think the second one only came out on the PS2. Good thing I put a hard drive in mine :P
It was on Xbox for sure. I didn't like it as much as the first game, personally, but that was then. Maybe my opinion would have changed since then, I dunno.
Oh, I may just ignore the Xbox's existence, as it's made by Microsoft. :P
Just noticed your reply, sorry for the late response!

That's fair.

I had already been messing with Linux by the time the Xbox released, and I deleted my final Windows partition in 2002 (I get my 20-year chip next summer!). I was mostly a Linux gamer back then (as well as my old consoles, SNES and TG-16), though we had real slim pickings with only LGP, Loki, icculus, Epic, and id really doing anything games-wise. I was as anti-Microsoft as they come...

However, a friend convinced me to get a [second-hand, pre-modded] Xbox by showing me the [open-source] Xbox Media Player (this was before the rename to XBMC, and now Kodi) running on his, streaming movies over his LAN. The price was right. Majority of my time with it was playing movies and TV shows on it, but a handful of [also preowned] games, too.

Anyhow. If my friend had showed me XBMP on a PS2, I would have bought that instead. Or a GameCube, or whatever. Just happened to be a Microsoft product. Oh well. It was a great media player at the time. Controller sucked for gaming, though. (And to this day I don't have a single Windows computer in my home, and I intend to keep it that way!)

It's been at least two years since I had the popup on my main gaming machine, but within the last two weeks I've had it pop up on two of my other machines (with significantly lower specs).

Oh yeah, NieR Automata... I should get around to playing that again and actually finishing it. The original game is my favourite game of all time (remake is even better, except for a few choices in the new audio), and Automata just didn't feel right to me, but I definitely want to give it another go.

As far as discounts that I want go, well, my wishlist is long, but mostly not a priority, so I'm looking for really deep discounts on most of it. The new Myst remake is the one I think I'd most like at this point, to play with my son, but it's still too new to expect something like 50% off, I suspect.
