That is interesting, I'd've guessed Stellaris (for 4X broader appeal) or CK 3 (for the RPG crowd). Huh.

It's worth mentioning that concurrent players (CCU) rarely gives you any insight into the number of monthly active users (MAU, the metric that publishers actually care about).

In this case though, it's spot on. HOI is bigger than any other entry in the PDS portfolio, and not by an insignificant amount. There's a reason we had a decade of almost nothing but WW2-themed shooters; gamers love that setting.

The amount of adventurers is a drop in the bucket compared to the full character count.

The main thing impacting performance in 1.13x is Administrative realms; they have a lot more going on internally than other government types, so more/bigger admin realms have a bigger impact than equivalent feudal/clan/tribal realms do.

That's quite the assumption. Valve hasn't shown much of a will to bend to publishers. They've let them leave steam because the publishers didn't get what they wanted.

Back at ya, you're assuming something that neither of us actually know. I'm just coming from the side of: we know Steam keys are already a thing and have been for a long time, and it would be to Valve's benefit to do it and would take little effort from Valve.

Publishers are allowed to generate up to 5,000 keys without question, but anything beyond that has to be approved on a case-by-case by Valve. Considering the number of copies Diablo 4 moved, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Valve rejected a request for bulk keys; that's a lot of potential money from second-time buyers to give up.

My personal favorite story is when I tried playing as Aella of Northumbria and basically thunderdomed all of northern england trying to survive the combined assault from Ivar in the north and Halfdan to the south. I barely survived by the skin of my teeth, then suddenly Haesteinn declared war for my single duchy and forced me into a game over.

Goddamn vikings.
