Helldivers 2 rated Playable for Steam Deck by Valve

Well, I'm glad the choice is here, but I'm already soured on the game from its DRM introduction.

Has anyone here played it; is it any good? Watching that trailer got my hopes slightly up from the Paul Verhooven-ish "Are We The Baddies" intro, but the rest of the gameplay seems to completely drop that tone, so it looks like just another bro-shooter. Is there more to it?

I just have to say, this F.A.Q. entry....
Q. Is nProtect GameGuard a security risk? [...]
A. No. GameGuard communicates with a few servers for patching and reporting. However, it doesn't modify anyones firewall settings and it doesn't install other software
Oh, it's only a black-boxed kernel level process that communicates with several servers, yeah, I don't see any increase in attack surface there! /s /facepalm

I dislike any game that promotes the capture and use of animals for fighting. The only game of the genre I've picked up, is Cassette Beasts, precisely because the creatures are not captured, hurt or used. It might be a minor distinction for some, but I just cannot support a game that promotes - even through a fantasy lens - such horrible actions that very much do happen in the real world.

As for AI generated content, I am absolutely fine with it as long as it's used at the same level as mood-boards, reference photos and the like has already been used for ages already, or for "non-artistic" use, such as seamless textures (clouds, rocks, grass, etc.). Once we get into the territory of AI content being used instead of actual artists, that's when I start disliking it.

Quoting: CybolicI'm for the idea, but the language of "content [...] created with the help of AI tools" might cause issues.

A popular method of using (what's commonly called) AI is for sketching out ideas and getting rapid feedback on them. If for example, a writer puts in a page worth of text and asks the AI to give its feedback on, say, the themes or tone of the text
Really? People trust the feedback of those things? On stuff like themes? That's, um, the word that keeps coming to my head is "pathetic".
Out of curiosity, what would you consider a non-pathetic way to get feedback?
. . . From a sentient being that knows the meaning of the words it uses? Why is this hard?
Completely agree, but a sentient being can't really be run in the background to do a real-time litmus check on your prose; "AI" can. When the first draft is done, I absolutely agree it should be checked by a real human.

They do, to a degree. It's all about using the tech for what it actually is. If the "AI" says that the tone is "this" and the themes are "that", then there's a pretty good chance that the text as it least similar to other pieces of text that have been classified as such by actual human beings. They're fancy pattern recognition engines, and when used as such, I don't see any issue with them.
Mind you, that's a completely different use-case from just using "AI" output as (or close to) the final product, which I presume is what this labelling is meant for.

I've said this since the Celine Dion rootkit [External Link] fiasco: rootkits should not be legal and I don't understand how they still are.
To me, it's like IKEA demanding a copy of the keys to your house just to, you know, be able to check whether you're producing counterfeit furniture in the future - no-one would find that acceptable, but rootkits are somehow fine. I just don't understand

A popular method of using (what's commonly called) AI is for sketching out ideas and getting rapid feedback on them. If for example, a writer puts in a page worth of text and asks the AI to give its feedback on, say, the themes or tone of the text, that now has to be tagged as AI generated, despite not a single word of the final product being AI generated.
For developers, it's also fairly common to use AI as a talking rubber duck (i.e. bounce human-generated ideas off of it to see if it spots any holes in the logic). Again, none of the code is written by AI, but it would now be tagged as if it was.

If this leads to practically every game having the AI tag, the point of it seems a bit lost.

Well, I tried, but Gleam just kept telling me that they were doing maintenance and asked me to refresh - for an hour, in the middle of the night, for nothing. Great experience; wouldn't do again! :woot:

Quoting: morbiusIt's a silly pointless game, not really worth your time. It's got nothing to say and says it boringly.
Well, I will admit that when I found out that the reason I was stuck on a puzzle for a long time was due to me not having waited the appropriate time, I did feel that my time was wasted and it's what made me drop the game; but I still look back on my time with the game up until then with fondness - the mood and soundscape is quite lovely - so I wouldn't write it off completely for new players.
