Steam Play versus Linux Version, a little performance comparison and more thoughts

i dont think its up to sony, because they dont care if games come to pc, etc.
but developers would have switch, windows and android covered, so they have to demand vulkan on SP5

Quoting: jarhead_hand apple.Quoting: mylkathats an eye openerI don't see how Sony decides on anything else. They may stick with some flavor of BSD for the OS, but they are going to pick Vulkan. And that means that AAA ports to PC will be the Playstation versions. Eventually Microsoft will be the only company still producing PC games that are DirectX only, and several will drop it entirely because there is simply no need for it. Make one version for the Playstation and it ports considerably easier to everything except the Xbox.
i hope VULKAN will have its breakthrough with PS5

do you want less native games, or more proton?
what do you think is best for linux market share? much more games with proton, or less native?
6 years steam client and only 0,8% linux users
linux needs MARKET SHARE! we wont get the gamers, if there are no/less games on linux
valve tried to make developers port games to steamOS... it failed, because of <0,8% market share
now they try a different way and proton is just the beginning
lets wait a few years. maybe developers make proton games, maybe more and more gamers switch to linux, because they can play 90% of the games with ONE CLICK om linux
after linux has enough market share developers will make native ports again. i am pretty sure about that, but you have to start somewhere and proton is a very good start
feral can still make ports of online games with anti cheat and games with nice graphics like tomb raider, because perfomance will be way better (as long as not everyone switches to vulkan and we have the same perfomance on linux)

Quoting: GuestProton is gonna be the end of native ports and companies like Feral. It will also confirm Windows as the only "true" gaming os on personal computers. Really sad.even if its true, whats the problem with that?

there are games with OLD linux ports.
BLACK THE FALL https://store.steampowered.com/app/308060/Black_The_Fall/ [External Link]
this game has a linux port, but it is very old and the newer windows version looks complete different. the developers wont answer to any questions and they dont delete the linux version
so what you gonna do? now you can install the win version and maybe it works as it should
linux needs market share and for that you need games you can play with ONE CLICK

Quoting: Cr1ogenif they want to force Linux games to work with Steamplay because they do not use windows directly? I think it's a step backwards in the fight that Valve has been doing for Linux usersdo you think?

Quoting: GuestThis is great. Anyone know if it's possible to have both native and proton versions installed at the same time to quickly switch between the two for testing?change directory name of the game and steam wont see it (but close steam first) and you can install it again
Hope I can use proton for Rocket League to finally get workshop maps working. Performance might be better too. Rocket League's Linux performance is pretty poor compared to Windows sadly.

i definitely try METRO. the linux ports rly suck and have less options, than on windows
since there is no WAR THUNDER VULKAN update i think the Win version also could run better now (depends on anti cheat)
and i may can finally play DEAD ISLAND on linux
i complained a few days ago and hoped for forcing steamplay on native ports
and for some reasons 12 is better than 6 and iron snout wont work for me
but first i have to finish some games and make free space

Quoting: Guesti bet tomb raider 2013 and rise of the tomb raider will run even better now gonna have to test thisrise of the tr has VULKAN and runs pretty good. i dont think, that it runs better with an extra DXVK layer. but maybe someone give it a shot and makes a NATIVE / PROTON comparison video. same with HITMAN

you can not ask the buyers to compile their own mesa
either change the game, so it works with new mesa versions, or help mesa to fix it. they werent willing to do anything
my point was, that nobody can expect lifetime support for a game. so it doesnt really matter if you buy a PLATINUM proton game, or a native version, because a new game update can break the game and so can a new linux distro/driver update and then they say "sry we only support old distros with old drivers"

Quoting: x_wingin my opinion, it is still the responsibility of the developers to make the game workable, if they know the problemQuoting: mylkai bought Dead Island Definitive CollectionWell, I agree That Techland is far away from giving a good support for Linux (but seems that it's also bad on Windows, so maybe is not only with us...), but in this case the problem is on Mesa side:
Dead Island Retro Revenge works with proton
DI + Dead Island: Riptide Definitive Edition wont work. they worked with ubuntu 16.10 but after i updated ubuntu it doesnt work anymore
i wrote a mail to the developers AND the publisher.
developers just said, that they look into it.
publisher said: "sorry we just support ubuntu 16"
i wrote them back: "but this game is just 2yrs old, can u please give support"
i never heard from them again!!
so here is what happens to SUPPORT OF NATIVE VERSIONS

I'm able to play both games by building Mesa without glvnd support. My workaround simply requires to add in to the linker path the location of my built libGL.so.1.2.0 (i.e. I keep using the other system wide Mesa libraries).

i dont think they make witcher 3 unplayable with proton
i also dont think, that bethesda updates the buggy new vegas (they have enough problems creating a new fallout ENGINE)
you also can play GTA5 single player. so if you just want to play the story, youre good to go
i bought a few windows games and i played them with proton. if they wont work tommorrow i wont regret it, because i had fun and there are just a few games i played twice in my life
just use your brain before you buy a windows game, but dont denigrate proton at all
btw. a little story about "support" of native games

Quoting: WendigoAnd this is exactly the reason why I would never buy a Windows game even if it has platinum status for Proton.ONLINE games with anti cheat
There is just no guarantee that the game will still work in a few weeks / months / years and if you get issues in the future you are left in the rain since the game was never made to be run on Linux.

DOOM only has GOLD and its whitelisted
all wolfenstein also just have GOLD
i bought some gold games like prey, ryse and batman and they all work OOTB
btw do you know when its posible to install the windows version even if there is a native port?
both metro just suck on my machine and i wanna try them with proton.
or dead island wont start and i also wanna try with proton
