GOG finally remove the false "in progress" note about GOG Galaxy for Linux
1 Jul 2022 at 11:34 pm UTC

Quoting: ShmerlAbout Steam Deck, I'm still not clear if input support and all the controller related stuff is tied to Steam or not. Let's say you get a GOG game (whether native or Wine use case). How are you going to integrate it with controllers without Steam? Is it possible? Are there open source libraries for Steam Deck controllers support that can be exposed to games and Wine?
Maybe https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2020/12/standalone-steam-controller-driver-and-ui-sc-controller-gets-a-sweet-small-upgrade/ still works?

Quoting: GuestI keep trying to support GoG, but they keep giving me less and less reason to.
I kept wanting to support GoG, but they kept piling up reason after reason for me to just stick with Steam and Humble Store. This admission of their ongoing lie is just the "final nail in the coffin" for me, virtually guaranteeing they'll never see a single dime of my money.

I like it. I use it allatime. Gets the job done for me. Haters just gotta hate, I guess; "It's different from what I know, therefore automatically bad for everyone, and nobody should be allowed to like it."

Quoting: LNXfor killing native linux games development
It might, but it haven't happened yet.

Check the stats for native releases by year on Steam. It's pretty constant, even with the arrival of Proton.
Yeah, I keep seeing people say that Proton is killing native Linux development (or guaranteed to be the death of native Linux games, or already has been/is), then I see on a fairly regular basis native Linux builds of various new (and old) games released. In addition to those native Linux games, I also see more games I've been told will never ever in a billion years run on Linux running on Linux (thanks to Proton).

I highly doubt that Proton's gonna be the death of native Linux games, but it sure does give us all access to a shit-ton of games we'd not be able to play otherwise, and gives publishers and developers a dead-simple way to support selling their games to a platform that many such publishers simply don't understand well enough to give us a native Linux build even if they wanted to. I'm thankful for all the work Valve's put into the WINE project, even if it is totally self-serving and profit-driven. An "everybody wins" scenario still means I win, even if Valve wins also.

Boatswain is a new Stream Deck compatible app for Linux

@Liam and the GoL Team: Thanks a ton for these articles. Much appreciated. Always neat to find new ways to support interesting hardware and tools on Linux.

Quoting: TheRiddickWell phones auto turn off screen, don't have button feedback.
There are convenient issues with touch screen method of doing things.

One could certainly MAKE their own device with buttons and a touch screen in background, but it comes down to if you feel its worth your time and if your tech savvy enough to get all the bits together, probably also need 3d printing done.
One could make their own device, and it'd probably even be a fun project for some of us, but for those who don't feel it's worth their time, or aren't tech savvy enough, there's a couple few Android/iOS apps already in existence that do the job just fine. The best one I've found thus far (at least for my needs) is DeckBoard [External Link]. It's even got the "server-side" part of the app in Linux native flavors (deb, appimage, and tgz) and sources on GitHub. All you need to provide is an Android phone or tablet, a PC to send commands to, and a bit of your time configuring up your button pages.

Quoting: elmapulis there any advantage of using stream deck over, i dont know... a phone? it dont seem something hard to replicate
Apparently it's not that hard to replicate. See the part of my comment above that refers to the DeckBoard app for one valid option that I know of. A bit of searching turns up many other similar tools, but that's the one I like, and it's Linux friendly to boot.

Don't expect GOG to support the Steam Deck

Quoting: GuestThe only appeal they have now is to offer DRM free games
I think GOG kinda lost it's way when DRM-free stopped being a thing customers cared about.

When they started, it was a good play. There were a lot more stores and the number of stores was decreasing, so people could be concerned about losing their library if a store closed.

Today, I think people are not worried that a store like Steam will close, or are that worried about DRM in general asuch as they were in the past. I think GOG as a store didn't really figure out how to react to that in a meaningful way and still haven't.
I never stopped caring about DRM, but I sure stopped caring about GOG right around the same time they stopped caring about Linux users.

This right here is exactly why I will never pre-order a game, nor back one on crowd-funding ever again. Fool me once, shame on you… Ain't gonna happen again.
