Trouble in Solus Linux land as their Experience Lead quits
3 Jan 2022 at 11:17 pm UTC Likes: 7

Quoting: samurroAlso lately I have been reminded that using a non mainstream distro (in my case OpenSUSE Tumbleweed) comes with its drawbacks, which at some point, might not be worth it anymore.
This is one of the reasons I could not bring myself to use Solus (in addition to many other notable reasons).

Like it or not, the future of Linux is no longer in small boutique distros with a skeleton crew, because the skeleton crew can disappear overnight. The future of Linux is now in large, well establised distros with large, well established teams and a solid financial base that can survive a sudden death or departure, and can pave their own way. We are talking Arch (and Manjaro), Fedora/Red Hat, Ubuntu (and maybe Pop, Elementary, and Mint), Debian, and OpenSUSE/SLE. Any new distro that comes will need to build up, fast, but will also need to cannibalize resources from other distros to do it.

System76 announce COSMIC, their own GNOME-based desktop environment for Pop!_OS

As someone that is happy with Gnome 40 on Fedora 34, I question the wisdom of yet another Gnome fork.

Good for them and I hope their user base will be happy. But i feel this will just cause needless fragmentation.

Quoting: KohlyKohlI've tried to use Gnome and I just don't see why anyone would use it. The user experience feels awkward and outdated. The lack of desktop icons by default and the Activities Overview keep me from recommending this to new users.
Funny enough, when you get used to the lack of desktop icons, you don't even miss them. Even when I use KDE or (gasp!) Windows, I turn off desktop icons now.

The Gnome workflow is fairly similar to that of tiling window managers like i3. You either like it or you hate it.

I too downloaded Fedora 34 beta to try Gnome 40. So far its been a VERY pleasant experience for me.

Quoting: BrisseReally been looking forward to this one but I probably have to be a bit patient since Debian is currently frozen in preparation for the next big release. Been keeping an eye on the experimental-repo but there's no GNOME 40 yet.
Don't expect Gnome 40 to hit Debian until after Bullseye releases. Bullseye is in a hard freeze, so no packages are being added to experimental until after release.

I supported Chroma Squad on Kickstarter back in the day. Fantastic game, and very tongue-in-cheek humor to boot.

Linux hardware vendor ZaReason has officially closed up shop

Its a shame to see them shut down, but not unexpected. There's not a lot of room for more small computer vendors when you have to compete with Dell, Lenovo, HP, and System76 in the US.

They also hadn't been putting themselves out there, so to speak; when I bought my most recent laptop, Zareason wasn't even on my list of contenders. Contrast that to System76, which has been making waves for awhile.

Yeah this is totally Rimworld.

I might give it a try.

Cyberpunk point and click 'VirtuaVerse' is out now and looks incredible

I've been looking forward to this game for a long time! Playing through it now, and I love it! And I even suck at point and click games.

Plus the developer has gone out of his way to respect his end users:

1. Day 0 Linux build
2. DRM free options for those that want it.
3. The OST is available DRM free too.

Day 0 purchase for me.
