Valve's Steam Deck developer event is open to all to watch today at 6PM UTC

Doesn't seem like their video streaming service can handle all the ppl tuning in. Guess I'll watch it later.

I take solace in the fact that there doesn't seem to be a shortage of interested parties

EDIT: They seem to have switched to a youtube stream:

...and they're live as of 11:55 PST

Supporting Linux / Proton and the Steam Deck with BattlEye is just an email away
10 Nov 2021 at 10:25 pm UTC

Tested Z1 Battle Royal - played a couple solo matches. Worked flawlessly after installing the proton BattlEye runtime.

If BattlEye has made this opt-out instead of opt-in, I'd be very happy. There are a number of games that are no longer receiving updates whose devs might not even take the time to request support.

Obviously, even better would be official support/confirmation from the game devs, but at least with it being opt-out, it's even easier for game devs to support, even in an unofficial manner.

The looming possibility of being banned is definitely still a bummer tho

Windows compatibility layer Wine 6.21 is out now

Quoting: Hooly6.21...
Are there any infos regarding the next major version jump (Wine 7)?
Per the wine user guide [External Link]:

The stable branch is on an annual release schedule, with minor updates as needed (usually every 10-12 weeks)
Stable versions are 6.0, 7.0, etc, while development releases are 6.1, 6.21, etc

Wine 6.0 was released in January of 2021. It stands to reason that 7.0 will be released in this upcoming January.

FYI: the stable release won't have anything currently not in the development releases. As long as you are on the latest development release, you have all the latest functionality and compatibility.

Really hoping for Z1 Battle Royal, which I haven't played since switching exclusively to linux back when the game was still called H1Z1

Valve adds support for games using CEG DRM through Steam Play Proton
29 Oct 2021 at 6:31 pm UTC Likes: 1

just a quick fyi: proton-ge added this commit [External Link] for the proton-side of CEG support. if there are games that use CEG that require fixes in proton-ge (like Black Ops II), these should* run with the next release of proton ge (or now if you build it yourself).

*i haven't finished building it yet, but i have high hopes, since it works in lutris with wine-ge-custom and only needed the CEG support to run in steam proton

Manjaro Linux 21.1.0 Pahvo is out with installer improvements, new desktop upgrades
19 Aug 2021 at 3:15 am UTC

IMHO, the enhanced installer support for Btrfs is by far the biggest new feature to come to the manjaro iso. The automatic setup of btrfs subvolumes for your main partitions (no more worrying about balancing the size of the root and home partitions separately), as well as the automatic snapshots whenever you update are a huge benefit to newcomers to linux.

If you need to boot into an earlier snapshot of the system, you have options right there in the grub menu on startup. No manual setup required, and all your files, settings, preferences, etc are exactly the way you left them, in the same amount of time it takes to reboot. How cool is that?

Granted, I've never run into breakage issues because I watch the update announcement threads for potential issues (and follow the rare but necessary manual update steps, like merging pacnew files), but this provides a very robust safety net for anyone worried about installing updates on an Arch-based system, right out of the box.

A busy weekend ahead perhaps? Steam Play Proton 6.3-5 is out now

FYI: according to recent comments [External Link] on GTA 5's proton issue, Self Radio now works in Proton Experimental:
* Place MP3's in compatdata/271590/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/Rockstar Games/GTA V/User Music
* Seems to crash if you put in more than 600mb worth of music

Linux vendor System76 releases the Pangolin, a full AMD laptop

Quoting: HamishI am assuming they mean RX Vega graphics.
This laptop does not have discrete graphics - only integrated. Whatever comes in the CPU is what you get.

Not a bad device. Bit pricey, but could be worth it for fully supported hardware and firmware updates.

Personally, I'm still waiting for them to have a keyboard with a trackpoint. I can't stand using touchpads.

Valve help developers into adding more controller support with new stats
24 Feb 2021 at 10:48 pm UTC Likes: 1

I use a PS4 controller for pretty much all games I play, including ones normally keyboard and mouse only (using qjoypad [External Link] ).

Having grown up playing games on consoles, the availability of playing those same games on PC in a similar manner was key to transitioning not only myself but others to gaming on Linux.

IMHO, if I'm not using a controller, it's not as relaxing - which is one of the main reasons I game to begin with. Unwind before hitting the hay. All the naysayers can pry my controller from my cold dead hands :p

It's hard to believe but Counter-Strike has turned 20 and it's still going strong

Might not be directly related, but just checked the status of the segfault when attempting to launch CS:GO with a controller plugged in. Looks like there might be a better workaround [External Link] than just disabling controller support with "-nojoy"

The segfault itself seems to happen in the bundled version of the SDL2 .so, in ./bin/libSDL2-2.0.so.0. Using the version bundled with my system also lets me reach the main menu. This is done via the Launch Options setting: LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libSDL2.so %command% Distro is Arch Linux, package version of sdl2 is 2.0.12-2.
I can provide further details if necessary.
