Double Fine Productions acquired by Microsoft for Xbox Game Studios, Psychonauts 2 still for Linux

MS seems to be buying up most of the Indies with a good track record and strong fan base. It's pretty clear they want to have a large number of exclusives for the next generation of consoles and this sucks for gamers.

If you're having trouble running Imperator: Rome, a patch should hopefully be out next week

Quoting: ExidanFor once, I've been lucky. The game runs with no problems to me, and I'm having a blast
Same here. It is buggy as hell though, but that is to be expected with fresh Paradox releases.

Imperator: Rome from Paradox is out today with same-day Linux support (updated)

"Startup fix for Linux
The paradox launcher is failing to start with this error:
error [SteamService]: Failed to initialize Steam API: Error: Steam initialization failed. Steam is running, but steam_appid.txt is missing. Expected to find it in: /home/NOPE/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/ImperatorRome/launcher/steam_appid.txt

The fix is to run this from the terminal:
~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/ImperatorRome/binaries/imperator
Which will launch the game directly.

Thank you flyinglama for this information."

Running great so far, other than the launcher issue.
You can also create the steam_appid.txt like this
$ echo 859580 > {install_dir}/launcher/steam_appid.txt

Thanks to Bluekkis from the paradox forums for this info
I still had to start the Launcher manually from the command line, but now it works as expected and multiplayer is active.

Valve have now officially teased their own VR headset with Valve Index

The one thing I am still concerned about is price, as the HTC Vive, the only currently official SteamVR headset, is still around £500 and likely out of reach for many people (myself included).
I have a feeling the price is being set by HTC, that have decided to mostly target the "Proffesional" markets with them and it's one of the reasons Valve are making this headset. SteamVR won't be able to compete with Occulus if it's headsets cost 2x. So I expect these will be priced better than the HTC stuff.

A couple dots are barely visible on it, but it hints at it being compatible with the lighthouse tracking system :)
Of course, there's no telling whether it also includes inside-out tracking... But those lenses might be able to provide great AR experiences :)
Yeah i read that, though it seems the Ars author is unaware that Lighthouse tracking is Valve tech

Quoting: Purple Library GuyI wonder if it would ever be workable for a game to reflect some of that stuff.
It's called Crusader Kings 2.

Humble has a pretty good Game Development book bundle

The best way to describe the quality of Packt books is inconsistent. Really most books that try to teach Programming through some game engine seem unfocused and superficial, since they're really trying to teach 2 in 1(The engine and the language)

Quoting: callciferMass Effect: Andromeda. I've been holding off on this due to horrendous first impressions from people whose opinion I respect, but out of sheer boredom (and longing for the original trilogy) I've decided to give it a shot. 4-5 hours in, the game is... ok, I guess. It doesn't have that Mass Effect soul but it's not completely horrible either.

This is also my first experience with Lutris + DXVK and I have to admit, everything runs perfectly. 1440p resolution, everything on ultra and I get 70/130 min/max fps, with the average around ~90. Absolutely amazing!
I never really got the negativity. The game itself is quite good, i really liked the combat. The story is rather nonsensical, but i haven't liked any of the stories since the original ME. Both ME2 and 3 had big plot holes. ME3 made all the choices you made earlier pretty much inconsequential just to shorten development time. EA sucks

OpenGL to be deprecated in the next macOS release, could mean interesting things for Linux gaming
4 Jun 2018 at 10:48 pm UTC

Apple have been trying really hard these past few years to damage MacOS with their decisions regarding software, hardware design choices and even complete lack of new hardware for certain sectors. They could very well become one of those companies that crash really hard
