A new Steam Beta is up with Vulkan pipeline dumping and collection along with Steam Play improvements

Quoting: Egonaut
Quoting: Purple Library GuyI know there are knowledgeable people here. What the heck is "Vulkan pipeline dumping"? It sounds like either a good thing or something oil companies do when something has gone very wrong.
Vulkan pipeline dumping is like the DXVK state cache, but it works for any Vulkan application. So native and DXVK through Proton. Like the OpenGL cache in Steam it's also shared*, which means over time we won't have any stutter in any Vulkan (especially Proton+DXVK) game, due to shader compiling, anymore.
So for Proton games, does it work on top of the DXVK state cache ? Does that mean we now have three levels of caching (pipeline, state, shader) ?

Wine 4.3 is out with the XAudio2 reimplementation 'FAudio' included

Quoting: GuestThis is huge. It will make a lot of games go from silver to gold or even to platinum on protondb.
But isn't FAudio included in Proton already ?

What have you been playing recently and what do you think of it?

I grabbed the Batman Arkham trilogy on Steam because it was absurdly discounted. Almost done with Arkham Asylum, really liking it so far. It runs good on Proton after a few protontricks (well, as good as a D3D9 game can run on Linux anyways).

Also just finished Life Is Strange (the first one). That ending man...

GreenWithEnvy, an impressive tool for overclocking NVIDIA GPUs

Quoting: pbI have a laptop with 1060 gpu set at discrete, I wonder if I could downpower the card with this tool to avoid the fan noise during normal usage (non-gaming). Does it make the changes in real time or does it require reboot?
It should be immediate.
Note that the Nvidia driver already downclocks on its own : if you are not gaming or doing any intensive stuff, the card hovers at a low power mode until it's needed.

It's easy enough to do in terminal, like this Ubuntu example:

sudo nvidia-xconfig --cool-bits=8
I wouldn't recommend that. nvidia-xconfig creates a new auto-generated xorg configuration file in /etc/X11/, however that configuration file filled with a lot of outdated stuff which may break your display server. Not to mention it will conflict with your existing xorg.conf.

More updates on Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation with Vulkan for Linux

Another dev made a similar comment about "something" happening in the gaming industry about Linux, but I can't find the source.

Maybe it's the beginning of more commitment from the gaming industry, that would be really great. My personal theory is that it has something to do with cloud gaming : running game rendering servers on Linux means better integration with Linux stack that are already there, and removes the need to pay for those pesky Microsoft licenses. But that's just a theory at this point.

Very hyped for Psychonauts 2, the first one was such a little gem.
