Smith and Winston, a metroidvania-styled twin-stick shooter in a voxel world has Linux support

It also has a bit of a fez vibe to it, somehow :)
It looks very nice, I hope there will be some sort of couch multiplayer (though that would also be OK without). It could be nice as a (team) deathmatch.
I would have also put a randomly-generated dungeon crawler mode, but maybe that's just me? Let's hope it has support for mods for this to come in at some point!

Quoting: FurorIt is made from the same people of Voxatron?Yep, definitely reminded me a bit of this one! (I was even going to look for the name, as I got it as part of the first humble asm.js bundle).

Quoting: StrangerMy favourite way of buying stuff is when a game is offered as a Steam *and* a GOG key on the humble store... Best of both worlds, from a consumer perspective :)Quoting: daishordIt looks great and I like the setting. Time for a new computer, I fear...Hi ! We're working on a Itch.io release, and we've also been in contact with GOG. We'll have more on this in a few days, right now Steam is the way to go.
And is it possible to support the devs without paying a Steam tax? Just when there are real alternatives to buy PCs without the MS tax.

That outcome seems a bit unlikely, though. And if they do it, they are probably going to get there progressively.

Quoting: anarchist_tomatoIn that scenario, I think it would be much easier for them to just recompile the win32 API over a Linux abstraction layer (which is likely just a matter of linking against the right libc), together with other various parts of their OS, which is actually quite modular (and why not use their code, since they have access to it? It would also remain closed-source). Things like Object Management [External Link] might need a rework, or they could pick up Wine's implementation, but I am not a specialist.Quoting: GuestLinux is going to conquer the whole world. It is a matter of when, not if. So Microsoft is making the right moves... I expect them to turn Windows into a Linux distro + proprietary libraries/API/DE at some point. It will be cheaper for them to maintain, will be able to enter most markets Windows can't enter/dominate now, like mobiles/servers, and will still allow them to be top dog, assuming they create a good and polished Linux based desktop OS and make linux-compatible versions of their stuff like Office...Well I'll call myself a sceptic, but saying you're right, do you think in that scenario MS would eventually start investing in and coding within Wine? If Valve are bring Wine up to scratch, perhaps MS would finish up the job?
People may laugh at this idea now, but it is an inevitability. Trust me. It may not happen in 5 or even 10 years, but it will eventually... The traditional "pay for a Windows licence" model is dead.

Mojang to open source more of Minecraft with two libraries already on GitHub

There seemed to be plenty of mods, less compatibility issues than with Minecraft, and the recent improvement refine it further yet. I look forward to being able to execute some code client-side (with Server-sent client side mods), which would enable more intensive stuff. And an in-game mod browser seems to be planned (?), which would be a welcome addition.

Quoting: vlademir1I am not as aware of it as I would like to be, so you'd have to ask someone else for the details. But Minecraft's support for mods always seemed like an afterthought to me (especially on the server side, having to ressort to hacks, reverse engineering projects, etc -- see craftbukkit), while it is a first-class citizen on Minetest.Quoting: MayeulCIt is more akin to Garry's mod. The base game is pretty vanilla/bland (though they're working on it), but Minetest is also a game engine, for which you can make games and mods very easily in LUA.How is the mod scene for Minetest these days? Last I gave it a spin, there wasn't yet anything even close to the late-alpha/early-beta era of Minecraft in terms of added content nor creativity of the content from mods and for me that's the place something like this should really shine since it's fully open source.

Well, since speculation is running rampant on this thread... I would like to see them opensource (or even just provide) a UWP runtime on Linux. I wouldn't actually be *that* surprised to see them do so, and would allow them to stay relevant, while pushing forward a solution they control. And having Microsoft Store on every platform would provide them with a generous cut of all the software sold. UWP as the next electron/java... we're going in circles :D
Regarding this move, this might also be that they were interested in some patents from the pool... Although I don't see how likely this would be.
Currently, what is being called Windows could be put as Win32/NT. GNU/Windows (GNU/Win32/NT) would be CYGWIN. Win32/Linux is something WINE does (and what you might be thinking about). GNU/NT is taken care of by WSL. More combinations to come if you count EXPLORER.EXE's shell in the lot.
Liam, there's a bug just above, I never put a smiley, it's " ) that get parsed as one.

Quoting: dudeHaha, imagine how wild it would be if Microsoft were to sponsor Liam... A wide Microsoft banner on the website, now, that would be something ^^Quoting: liamdawehttps://twitter.com/natfriedman/status/1050080717562990592They have a lot of explications, but not excuse for for not funding GOL.
We did not exclude any patents from our OIN commitment to license our portfolio to the Linux System. We signed the standard OIN License Agreement, and didn’t negotiate any exclusions. We actually clicked through the OIN agreement like any other licensee!
Quoting: Luke_NukemThis idea has been floating around for a while, but your terminology is Flawed ;) You can't have Linux without Linux.Quoting: GuestLinux is going to conquer the whole world. Turn Windows in to a Linux distro that doesn't run Linux...

Quoting: GuestMicrosoft has already witnessed the inevitability of competing with opensource. Internet Explorer once ruled the internet with an iron grip when Netscape was opensourced to become Mozilla and Firefox... Alongside Chromium they utterly destroyed Microsoft's marketshare. Today IE and Edge marketshare is a joke...I get what you're saying, but the ruling browser nowadays is Chrome, which is proprietary (although there's Chromium, the "community edition").

Tons of fun, lots of diversity in the available mods and online servers. There are also Minetest "Games", which are basically mod packs, that form a more complete game (you have mineclone2, for instance, that aims at recreating Minecraft, but if what you really want is another minecraft, you're going to be disappointed with anything but Minecraft, obviously).
They have a new website with some content (mods, games) already on it: https://content.minetest.net/ [External Link]
There's a lot of room for improvement, though, but it's quite promising, and steadily coming along :)
The engine is based on Irrlicht, IIRC. It performs better than Minecraft on lower-end systems, but has some missing features, I think (culling, far rendering), but some extras as well (bumpmaps are a nice touch). So, room for improvement everywhere (I've been wanting to contribute [External Link], I'll probably do when I have some free time).

According to Kotaku, Microsoft is close to buying Obsidian

Liam, an interview with both Microsoft and Obsidian would be nice to have after the deal is publicized. Pinning a few statements in an article would be nice, especially as their number one priority will be to reassure fans after the deal :)
Have them go on the record about their DRM, Linux, etc. plans, even if it's just to say "undertermined"/"no plans".

Quoting: liamdaweThey could do an "orange box 2" if they really want to avoid the "3" in their names :DQuoting: x_wingWell, feels like Microsoft answer to Valve Linux embrace & improvement is to buy game studios and start to planning a revenue constriction.I really do hope Valve have some serious other games lined up. They have some seriously good IP that need a refresh and continuation like Left 4 Dead 3, Team Fortress 3, Half-Life 3, Portal 3 and so on.
I could happily go for some L4D3.
They need more than Artifact (even though I've no doubt it will be a ridiculous hit) and In The Valley of Gods.

Quoting: BeamboomMicrosoft has actually changed with the new CEO. So I would not automatically be as pessimistic as we had every reason to be earlier. That's not untrue, but let's not forget Microsoft has multiple departments whose politics and interests wildly differs (although that's getting better). So while their cloud department has exhibited some promising behaviour (and Satya Nadella having put more emphasis on this one), I wouldn't take that for granted.

I second the strace suggestion! It should show what's happening here, although it might produce quite a bit of text to parse.
How about you create a forum post and post the link here, not to derail the conversation completely? ;)
It would be nice to have the ldd output. have you tried bypassing the Feral launcher completely (maybe renaming executables, for instance). And creating a new user on your system to run it? (or maybe just setting $HOME to something else, and unsetting any env variable).
Although if it's a free() error, it might be a problem anywhere in the executable, so quite hard to debug, and related to your configuration, so even harder. I would try to launch it with software GL, if possible at all, to eliminate driver issues. A backtrace would be nice to have as well.

Interesting. They are open sourcing parts of the engine. Those are basically parts that already work quite well in Minetest. The only use I could see for them is making Minetest more interoperable with Minecraft (for example, it would be great to use Minetest's graphics engine with Minecraft, using a shim for compatibility with their "Blaze" engine API.

Bought the humble bundle for Opus Magnus.
I spent a great deal of time on Maia this week-end. The dev is quite reactive and it's awesome to have a chat with him on Discord, even though he mostly updates Windows dev builds.
Then I tried a few proton games that finished downloading. Did a bit of Dishonored, Deus Ex: Human revolution, The witness. Tried a few others that didn't work (Rage, No man's sky, spacemarine, to name a few). Eagerly awaiting the next mesa release to improve compatibility with the OGL 4.5 compat profile, and a few fixes.
And then I launched about 500 GB of downloads on Steam... this will last me a while :)
